Only downside for me was now further down the line I need a microphone, and I game with stadia which you can only use one output so the headphone has to have a microphone for you to use it

I didn't really feel they were well suited for gaming at all back then but it's also been ages since then with so many in-between. The sennheiser HD 58X are top for gaming
I think it's more horrible than the hd579 it's because the hd599 as you said has harsh highs and more bass. I don't like a lot of bass or even more than the mids and highs. I prefer the hd579 because of it's (on my opinion) warm flat sound, Because I like the more natural sound then a more boomy or punchy bass, So basically if you want a bit more bass. Get the hd599 but if you want a warm flat sound get the hd579
Should I buy these for PS4 gaming or Sony Platinum headset? I really want 7.1 surround and 3D audio (I know, not a lot of compatible games, but works with all VR games). I want good sound quality, but the Sennheiser is of course stereo only, but how good are virtual surround headphones and is the sound difference that big thats justifies skipping surround?
oddly i prefered the sound of the HD 558 more than the HD599. I did compare them yesterday and indeed the clarity of the HD599 was impressive and it felt just perfect overall-although the mids are a bit recessed -! but I think it really lacked warmth when compared to the HD558... still the hd599 is the way to go if you want something neutral

Why are they called "open back" if they have completely enclosed ear cups? They're nothing like the great, light, comfortable Sony MDR-F1, or those coming with MDR-DS5100, DS8000...

The 599's are $250 everywhere right now. A good used pair of HD-598se's for $110 would be the best choice until the HD-599's get to a reasonable price point.

You may want to consider getting a cheaper bang for your buck headphone like the Philips SHP9500. Check out Z Review's video on it.
The 598 SE's are very good and the 599's are priced at $250 at this time. Used 598SE for $110 is a great deal.

@Chigzy Patel Music sounds a bit better with amp (FiiO K3), but in terms of imaging it's no different so you should be fine on your ps4
