The C17 was a nice add. I've flown on C17's many times. Those things are the Cadillac CTS-V of cargo planes. When doin tactical take off, they do what is called an Unrestricted Climb, and talk about your head being around your ankles when that happens... I hated it when we took off like that, but loved it cause I knew leaving Iraq and Afghanistan it was a piece of mind knowing g we were going to be out of range of just about anything thrown at us in a very short period of time.
I worked on the C-17 Globemaster III. And the reason it can achieve a high AOA (Angle of Attack) is due to a combination of extremely high thrust to weight ratio (engines are rated about 41 thousand lbs of thrust). An ogival shaped fuselage, shorter in length but higher in top to bottom for cargo capacity. And an anhedral wing and lifting body surface with large, vertical vortex dissipators at the outer wing surface and high lift, lower drag Fowler Flaps for climb. It's a very impressive aircraft with sub optimal landing area capabilities and 2° slope climb on the ground, in reverse. The only limitation the C-17 has is range and that is partially mitigated by a large, internal (ER) bolt on fuel tank. Also mitigated with in-flight refueling. But realistically? It could land and takeoff at SABA airport. Even with a full load.
Edit: For engine thrust I meant 41 thousand lbs thrust EACH. Total output 164 thousand lbs thrust. However, a leaked Boeing document has shown a possible C-17B model (Current model is C-17A) indicating a 30 plus foot fuselage extension coupled with larger Pratt and Whitney engines in the 50 thousand pound class. Giving the C-17B higher performance for the same fuel consumption as the current engines.
@@deathstrike Very cool. Since leaving the USAF in 2000, i haven't kept up with Mil aviation advancements. 130J, and C-17 were still shiny and new back then. I rode up top (facing backwards) in a C-5 once. Had a light load, and was impressed by the power it had.
AN-225 flew last year right above my house during air parade trainings. It was really gorgeous and humongous aircraft and, surprisingly, not really loud
And now it's in pieces destroyed by the Russians because stupid Ukraine gave up their nukes and USA kept expanding East after they agreed not to following the Cuban Missile Crisis. So basically America is the reason it got destroyed. Hooray us
A tip for taking off on short runways:The bad part about flaps is that they slow the plane down a lot. To get more speed when taking off you have to start the takeoff with the flaps off and put them to the maximum in the middle of the runway, just enough so that when you go to pull up, the flaps will be on.
Flaps don't move into position instantly, they wouldn't have time to set on such a short runway. Clearly you are used to unrealistic arcade style sims and have never flown like me!
That pretty much only works on STOL planes or planes with manual flaps. Once he got past the 172, which also has electric flaps, that would be impossible

@scott bakula huh? You saying the destroyed aircraft that was sitting in its hangar that got shelled by an invading force is somehow an insurance scam?
@Jason what sources, RT? It was destroyed while the Ukrainian forces were taking control, true. But the artillery that destroyed it was Russian, mainly due to Russia mass bombing the airfield in the hopes of achieving a "scorched earth" type retreat.

Man very good one. Just keep an eye on the landing gear. Landing gear acts a break for the plain. And it is especially critical to bring the gear up once you got off the ground on such a short run way to gain more speed and lift.
I remember being stationed off the coast of Spain. US Air Force. The first tower was hit and news had spread. We all assumed it was wartime, and prepped for flight, but were told to carry on. A few of us started pre flight procedure. That's when it got weird. Commanding officer said "I said at ease! Don't make me nine eleven you too!" This was before the second tower had been struck. I'm surprised you never do the DHC-6 Twin Otter. Nothing says Saba like a white Winair Twin Otter with red and blue trim. The pilots make a big show out of driving off the cliff while using the flaps to keep that bird on the ground until the last second!
When you come off the line with all engines full try having NO FLAPS in. Then at 50% runway drop in 20 degrees. You'll carry more speed into the takeoff.
