This was super fun, you guys! Thanks so much for having me, hope we can do it again soon!
It was an absolute pleasure to have you Charles!! So much fun and heck yes I'd love to do it again!!!!!
You guys are just amazing! Undisputed best channel on UA-cam, with the best guests!
You guys and John Williams: what an absolute feast! My inner music nerd is on fire right now
Yo it’s so cool seeing you guys geek out to Williams! He’s truly a legend living among us
The crossover we all needed, super cool
Ryan talked about setting up an expectation at 17:48 by picking up the guitar and what he did next is a shocking example of it.
Lmao
Excelent!!! LMAO😂😂
But he didn't deliver on it though 😂
They fucking cut it for sure
Voting for Charles to become a permanent part of this cast! You guys have so much fun together!! I love the dynamic!
❤
I second that!
Ryan and Jack are getting better and better with every episode. And I'm very happy to see Charles here! His channel and work are incredible!
what a tagteam, my goodness
the music nerdity is extremely strong, it's so much fun to watch
My thoughts exactly!🙂
Alfred Newman, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Miklos Rozsa, Victor Young, Bernard Herrmann, Max Steiner... old music creators that deserve recognition too.
Go Charles!! We love a leitmotif analysis 😍
I really love how light the Jurassic Park theme is. In a film that could have had a very aggressive, brass heavy score, Williams showed a lot of restraint in creating such a beautiful theme. The franchise would not be the same without it.
His theme felt like a celebration of life, and the wonder of seeing something in the flesh for the first time.
Yeah, he really brought across the sense of awe of seeing dinosaurs in real life for the first time, while the cast is still clueless as to the disaster that's about to unfold. It's so pure that it makes the rest of the movie that much more impactful. A masterclass in making a soundtrack fit and enhance the dramatic beats of the film.
Don't forget Spielberg's influence on the score. He almost certainly specifically asked John to create a theme of awe and wonder.
I'm a LOT older than you guys - that said, I'd like to see you do this same thing with Ennio Morricone's work. I'd also like you to listen to Jerry Goldsmith's score for "Patton" and Randy Newman's score for "The Natural".
I'd add Basil Poledouris' score for 'Conan the Barbarian'...
Chinatown
The Mission is incredible
Guest plays "Mary Has a Little Lamb" melody.......OOOOOH SHIT....GOT DAMN THAT WAS SICK!!
The crossover I didn't know I needed.
Professional Musicians React, Charles Cornell, and one of the all time great film composers all in one video? Whatever we did to deserve this, we'd better keep doing it! ♥
John Williams deserves a deep dive. Invite Charles back so you can talk about Binary Sunset, or Han and Leia's theme, or the ET flying theme, etc., etc. Or maybe Professional Musicians React could have its own Patreon with longer form content? Clearly you guys love sitting around and talking about this stuff.
This! They could spend a whole video on each film unpacking the themes.
"Etc.", may include, some of my favorite themes: "Can You Read My Mind?", from "Superman" (1978), "Main Theme", and "Captain Hook's Theme", from "Hook", "Marion's Theme", from "Raiders Of The Lost Ark", and "Luke's Theme", from "Star Wars".
@@calebclunie4001 oooh, Marion's Theme. Also the way they meshed it together with the Raider's Theme on the soundtrack album is just sooo tasty.
Ryan's the Ian Malcolm of this group. Keeping everyone grounded while Jack and Charles are flailing around. It's amazing.
haha
Malcolm in the Middle
Another great video! Loving this whole series so far but one critique for this one is that the editing here, unlike on the rest of the series, makes it feel like we missed a lot of the conversation which is unfortunate. I think most people wouldn't mind if some of these go a bit long, and on this one it'd have been helpful. That said I still got some new insights and I feel I learned a lot from the discussion that was shared.
Anyway, keep being awesome and looking forward to more great discussions!
Thanks for the feedback I love to know how to improve and will take note!
Just to tag onto this, the end felt very rushed. I mean, hey, this is youtube, what do you mean, we're out of time? It's your show, go as long as you want! But it was so much fun to listen to you all geek out about this stuff. Keep it going!
It’s amazing that a 20-minute video feels rushed, but it’s totally true, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I get that there is so much content we want creators to be editors and only give us their best stuff. But… if you think about these videos like jazz, part of the magic is in the improv. It feels like you guys could have gone off for half an hour about the minor IV and then found your way back. In some ways it feels more exciting than, say, an Adam Neely video devoted to the minor IV and its use in Western music (or whatever).
So, I’m gonna need another 3 hours of this…
This feels like a trailer for a season 😂
You’ve had some great guests, but Charles may be your best pick yet. Such a passion for learning and teaching music
It is an utter delight to see musicians enthusiastically nerdgasm to extraordinary pieces of music every week. Please, keep that.
YOU BROUGHT CHAAAAAARLES🔥
Okay, these blocks that explain musical ideas are boss! I'm hooked as a non-musician who appreciates musicians and music. Keep this up and I think the channel will appeal very widely. For example, I also like to watch Rick Beato and learn all about music and I'm 62 years old. Thanks so much!
This feels extremely professional! Almost like a documentary! Whenever you put a bunch of people who know a lot about a specific topic in a room together and they talk it is always so interesting!
Seeing Charles go absolutely ham over a piece of music will never not get me hype. Talk about contagious enthusiasm!
I would love another episode devoted to John Williams. In my opinion, his best work is in E.T. and I would LOVE to see your reaction to it.
John Williams is a genius and he will be remembered in the Pantheon of all great composers... That is all.
John Williams on the side is a cool person and down to earth. Him and Yoyo Ma .Loved his work for decades.Glad you guys is featuring his work
They did an album and an ep together you know
this is the crossover i never knew i needed
Biggest music geek out you've done so far and I'm totally here for it! Captured exactly how I feel when a phrase, melody, hook or groove, grabs me.
I'd love to see something like this with Ennio Morricone too. Not just the spaghetti western stuff, but things like the Mission and Gabriel's Oboe where such a simple melody just turns me to mush. His ability to make music be the star of a scene and how he takes you through an emotional journey with notes while people are doing nothing more than looking at each other for 5 minutes is ridiculous.
The soundtrack to Once Upon a Time in the West is such a masterpiece. It was also crazy how Sergio Leone had the soundtrack written before the movie so he could shape the movie to the music rather than the other way around.
I could have listened to hours of this. On that note, you might consider continuing this conversation. I guess that's how you know something is good, when people hate when it's over. Thanks guys
I'd love to see you reacting to Jacob Collier productions and the crazy amount of different things going on his tracks!
Great idea! I'd love to watch them reacting to Jacob's Tiny Desk (at Home) concert, for instance. That was surreal!
Imagine them reacting to moon river, it would be incredible
Reacting to moon river is my vote as well. So incredible.
"Modal interchange": the technique of borrowing chords from parallel modes.
I learned something today! Composers that can do this with skill are just the best. It's like they can take you on a emotional journey within a chord progression and then resolve it properly.
Interestingly (maybe) that the Imperial March, the part most associated with Darth Vader and the empire doesn't appear in A New Hope at all. They have a completely different motif for the empire in that movie that everyone forgets about, but it's this cool understated minor third thing throughout.
I love when music theorists get excited abs explain why we love “that part”
"TENSION & RELEASE...ALL that matters is that we ARRIVE" 🙌🏾🤍 Thoroughly enjoyed🥲♥️
Just a couple of music dorks geeking out about incredible art. Love it.
The collab I didn’t know I needed! Now they just need to do a song 😜
Criminally short episode about the greatest film composer.
John Barry- Dances With Wolves.
The horns get me every time.
Wow this was fantastic, definitely sticking around, thank you!
OMG my two favorite music channels have joined forces! I can die now!
I never thought I'd say this for an almost 20 minute long video on UA-cam, but this video is far too short! I could listen to these three analyze John Williams or Hans Zimmer every day.
That being said, here's an idea for a future video - works of Howard Shore, especially the ones used in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Beyond stoked to see Charles here!!
I love the energy in this video
That was so awesome!!! So many things that people don't take the time to stop and appreciate were mentioned here. I could listen to you and Charles talk about Williams for hours! Hoping Charles comes on the show again!
This one felt too short! I love that you guys approached soundtracks, though. I heard a story that one time when Spielberg approached John Williams about a soundtrack, Williams said "you need a better composer," and Spielberg's response was "I know, but they're all dead." And to think of the melodies and images and motifs that Williams has given us so far... it's just incredible. A RIDICULOUSLY talented composer.
Also, thanks to Charles for bringing up the concept of horizontal composing and the short video plug. It's getting added to my watch list!!
Oh awesome, you have Charles with you! I love how excited you are discussing the legend :D Also super helpful info on the music guys, thank you!
I'm watching/listening from a phone during work, with only one earpiece in my ear and this still hits like a truck of goosebumps. What a genius he is...
That episode was super cool, and brought me hapiness. Would you have listened to the score of the moveie 'Hook', I'd have been ecstatic.
This is the comment I was looking for!
I unserstood about 6% of what yall were saying, but I can totally relate to the losing of the collective shit over these tracks, insane stuff. Love the show guys! Keep it up
John Williams does not send off stuff to assistant composers and always fully orchestrates his works and only has an orchestrator to add small details and prepare the scores for the orchestra. The fact that this is his workflow and he finished Jurassic Park in a month, shows how ferocious he is and was especially at that time of his career
Thank you for pointing that out! I was actually a bit annoyed when they compared Williams (who is a real composer) to hans Zimmer, who ist just a simple pop keyboarder with a huge staff of talented and skillful people.
@@manuel.roesler I'll second that! 👍
Charles fits in too well here
There was soooo much energy in this post .
It was infectious ....Iearned lots.
P.s. Ennio Morricone ❤
this has become my fav channel rn!! thanks :)
"jurassic park" and "hook" scores are forever etched into my brain
also thomas newman's score for "fried green tomatoes"
This is SO fun to watch, I feel all the excitement you all are feeling!
Love Ryan's hosting! Keep up the great work!
Yes! Do it again!!!
this was really great stuff!
Great channel, great collaboration awesome video!! Please do more film scores!!
Great video! Love the pop-up explanations
Please do more content with Charles! This was awesome.
You guys together, your enthusiasm is infectious and I thank you for it :D
This video was every bit as epic as a Williams score. Loved it!
Great program Thankyou.
I love your channel!!! You guys are so cool. Keep it up!
I was jumping and laughing with you every single time guys! Love the content, please do one more with Charles about Jazz Standards!!!! That would be awesome
I loved seeing Charles and hearing his contributions.
Welcome to Jurassic Park, is my Pavlov bell to goosebumps. It never fails to do that...
This channel has quickly turned into one of my favorites. It's so fun and satisfying to see people get as excited as I do over a 2 second moment in a song.
Brilliant as always! Do Ramin Djawadi (Westworld, Game of Thrones) next!
That was too short!! We need more of this colab, please!!
This was fun to watch!
I really enjoy every episode! Every episode just gives me a new perspective on how to approach music and as someone trying to get a deeper under standing about music, these videos really help a lot!
You guys’ energy combined with Charles’ energy is amazing. Do more with Charles please!
Wow, I would love to geek out with you guys over this for another 10 hours.
SO MUCH appreciated seeing you all discuss these spectacular pieces of art and musical ideas😆🙌🙌🙌🙌
love the geek out guys!!
fascinating to see real musician not just reacting but also geeking out about music. I haven't seen such channel so far
Such a good episode! Their passion for John Williams, film scoring, pop and music in general is very contagious.
Excellent conversation!!! I feel like being there
Here through Charles Cornell. Loved every minute of it. Really great tidbits of music wisdom, courtesy of John William's impeccable works
Charles, Jack, and Ryan combo?! I didn't know I needed this. I need more!
Great video! Coming here by way of being a Charles Cornell subscriber. I learn something new every time I listen to him talk.
Absolutely love this!! Would greatly appreciate if you guys can make it longer even with like footage you'd edited out haha!
This episode was great. I loved how excited you guys got about the music, understandably since these are some great themes. After seeing you do John Williams, I'd love an episode on Nobuo Uematsu or Koji Kondo.
Your videos are easily becoming those I look forward to the most throughout the week! I must admit, I don't know a single thing about music, but hearing you guys talk about it so passionately and with such a deep and thorough understanding of it, is just amazing. An added plus is that these videos makes listening to songs I might already know, a completely different experience and I just love that. Keep up the amazing work - I will be following along for a long time to come. Respect and admiration all the way from Denmark
I would absolutely love one of y'all to do this sort of analysis with the soundtrack to either The Natural or The Shawshank Redemption. Both are so iconic of their times and represented standards that other soundtracks needed to live up to. They are absolute top notch orchestral landscapes.
And written by cousins!
Great video with Charles! Would be interested in seeing you guys discuss classical themes or motifs in modern music - in rock, pop, jazz, soundtracks etc... Keep up the good work!
This episode was great, please do more classical stuff!
Absolutely love this channel! Would love to see an in depth reaction to Beach Boys tunes from the pet sounds era. “Good vibrations” would be so fun to watch you dig into!
Always interesting. Whatever the material is. Thanks
The scene with the Yoda Mask is also part of a running gag between Spielberg and Lucas, which also included ET's species being represented in the Galactic Senate in The Phantom Menace.
I could've watched this the all-day, why did you stop! there's so much of William's catalogue...please do a part 2,3...
Always so good. More Prince please.
Bagpipes arguably have thier origins in the middle east - though from the time of antiquity, so definitely not as widely known as the higland pipes, so a really brilliant use of them in DUNE by Zimmer to have them layered in the score for a setting like that film.
Another absolutely fantastic video, but I must mention that I was fist pumping the air when Jack mentioned the Arrival soundtrack!! It's an unbelievable masterpiece, and the the added song with Max Richter (On The Nature of Daylight) is sonically beautiful.
The fourths and fifths in hero themes, I believe, originate from the open horn that could only really play these intervals. Horns were used for hunting and to direct troops. These things have heroic undertones.
To your point at the end, that the cultural environment influences how successful a melody will be - I think it works the other way as well, Especially w Star Wars. The soundtrack album was released months before the movie premiere, and 17 year old me was *not* alone in soaking up that album 24/7 for those months. The movie would have been a hit for all of us whatever showed up on the screen! And I know that was instrumental (pun intended) in the unheard of buzz that made us line up around the block for the movie opening.
Great video! You guys should definitely do a Part 2 and talk about some of Williams' lesser-known but still fantastic themes, such as Schindler's List, Catch Me if You Can, or The Adventures of Tintin!
As for unreal soundtracks, you’ve got to check Ennio Morricone, and particularly the soundtrack for The Mission. Absolutely unreal, emotional, gorgeous, etc.. Even if you never post about, listen to it. Simply one of the most moving musical works I’ve ever heard.
Nice recommendation!
