  • Taking intentional time to relax has become so important to me. Without setting time aside I end up not feeling fully relaxed because I feel like I should be doing something else. So cheers to just taking time out to just BE!

    Hi Scola!
Been watching you for 10 years this year, pretty much since I made my first YT-account. I don´t comment much anymore, but hearing you talk in this video prompted me to give some unsolicited advice so here comes a long one:
You and I have some similar experiences; central/southeren african girls raised in Europe, obese in childhood, 50+ lbs weightloss, chronic illness in young adulthood, so hearing about your "busy mind" was no suprise. The cognitive and emotional habits we develop throughout young adulthood is not seperate from our overall health. Why am I commenting? Because I winched at the way you talk about scheduling time for relaxation, this notion of "turning off your busy mind", and that you reached for a self help-y book now that you´re ready for some active change. I spent ages 15-22 with this same approach to wellness and I wanted to tell you it will likely not get you off the self improvement hamster wheel. Of course, I don´t know what else you´re doing and I don´t mean to patronize. I just wanted to let you know from my experience, what I percieve to be your approach is scratching the surface rather than discovering and tapping into your full potential for wellness. And as someone whose body has told you through chronic illness that it has been under a lot of stress for a sustained amount of time (I´m sure you know the link between cortisol insensitivity and many chronic illnesses that affect black women disporportinally - lots of correlational links found in research > www.bu.edu/bwhs/), you like myself, can´t afford to scratch the surface. Not when life itself is a constant onslaught. So how do you go deeper? Reorient yourself to where rest and relaxation is first position; not something to be scheduled or remembered, but the initial state you exist in and act from. Part of starting to cultivate this deep enduring peace is to start meditating and not stopping . It will allow you to experience the fact that 1) you are not your thoughts 2) you are not your mind, and the effects of having this first hand experience and knowledge, is life changing. I know it´s starting to sound woowoo, but that´s it. I´m not trying to convince you of anything metaphysical, and I´m not talking about meditation in the self help sense of trying to force yourself to sit still and beating yourself up when you inevitably don´t manage to. I´m talking about the practice of observing your thoughts without interfering; it teaches you the specifics of yourself which no one can teach you and that you can´t learn any other way. It also teaches you a lot about other people, the world and human nature; but that´s for you to discover. Look up people like Dr K here on YT; his viewers are mostly young men, but what he teaches on meditation is legit and accessible. As for books, engage with knowledge directly or
When I was an overweight little tween you, from miles away, taught me how to start exercising and actually liking it. I wanted to share what I have learned with you: 2 years of reorienting myself have created a state in my body where all those other things like diet, exercise/stretching, supplements, medication and love actually have a noticable positive effect,. By no means perfect, but much better and still improving in a way I, nor people around me, knew was possible.
    Aaaand I adore your content♥

Oh your heart 🤍 I’d love to chat with you more about this! I hadn’t mentioned it in the video as I’m still early in researching this and it can be quite a personal journey digging deeper but managing stress is my main focus at the moment. Fully aware how chronic stress is the root of lots of chronic illnesses and a big reason I’ve been taking time to just be instead of always chasing goals etc… the book I’m reading is less self development as such but more of a good way for digging deep with daily prompts to journal about for 15 days ☺️ Meditation is something I really want to get into properly and consistently so I will take this more seriously. Thank you for taking the time to write me! These type sharing/discussing is what I live for 🥰

Not me watching it, getting ready for bed, to late as always, totally stressed out from the day working at home, with a sick, but still pretty energetic toddler 😅 I love schedules, but my three year old has other ideas. 😂
