Life is the open road, we all get to choose which road to travel, we all get to choose how we view our lives, we all get to make peace/enemies of our burdens, and the human species is lucky to be the median for which the universe can experience itself through our discoveries and fascination.

This made me think at first about how I felt when young. Then I felt the paths I had been on we're not always my choice, there were roads blocked, the nature of this world. I can't go just anywhere, for God's plans for me we're not always my will. Then I realized how all my experiences are still carried in me, some as memories, some in my flesh, some, like love or fear are deep in my soul. Then when he was at the end, I wished that in my last year here on this world, I could still have the strength to just get up and go..... Just keep walking, until my days were ended. That might be true freedom, and the best way to live out the rest of my life. Because even now, in my autumn years, there's no way to know what paths I still have to travel, or how long they will be.

"Not I, nor anyone else can travel that road for you.
You must travel it by yourself.
It is not far. It is within reach.
Perhaps you have been on it since you were born, and did not know.
Perhaps it is everywhere - on water and land."
    - Walt Whitman

It is really not about an actual road. It is about his perspective. How he is unbound by conventionalism and grounded in nature as it is made in purpose & function. Greatful in his relationships that he finds both a blessing and worry in balance to his being. I adore his metaphors.

That is your perspective and a good one considering poets often speak in metaphor. The beauty of poetry is it becomes what the reader needs. Old Walt certainly had something in mind but yours and mine will see what we want in his words.

When I asked Jack Hirschman in an interview what is the greatest poem ever written by an America, he answered quickly ": The Song of the Open Road " by Walt Whitman. All homage and honor to Jack Hirschman who died on August 22 2021. And this from another poem by Whitman: "the keelson of creation is love."

This is probably a limitation within myself but...
I heard Walt Whitman was a poet I should read, I read him and was bored sensless
Then I though to look it up and hear someone read them too me, I was nearly brought to tears by this
If poetry has it's value in it's delivery, this person is worth their weight in gold

This poem matches my current mood so well. 60. Present troubles but I don't take them too heavily. I have responsibilities but none so important they can't be dropped. Maybe soon I will take off. My natural tendency is to drift. Cycle from my home near the Laos border in China up to Mongolia. Then winter in the holy mountain of Wu Tai Shan. I want little. Just to be away from bickering and posturing. The open road. Days can be tough. But the freedom of no plan no destination is a siren call.

Yes "I'll fill them in return" and if I can do that the way I want this multitude of life to remain for ever anywhere like here we have been with abundance and good will for generations. And a little bit of endeavour in the direction in my life will add to, I believe, a colossal work that all good humans are striving for. I won't compromise to anything however good or lascivious to change my view.

Going where I list, my own master, total and absolute,
Listening to others, and considering well what they say,
    Pausing, searching, receiving, contemplating,
Gently, but with undeniable will, divesting myself of the holds that would hold me . .

This is very good. Some of the Song was used for a TV ad by Volvo, a few years ago. That reading was stronger….just IMO.
