  • A video introducing what the canonical gospels, called Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, are not and what they are. The video concludes with the following definition of the gospels:
The gospels are four anonymous narrative accounts of the life of Jesus named Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These narratives are most closely related to the genre of ancient (not modern) biography, are influenced by Jewish Scripture, and were written between 70-90 CE. The gospels contain various kinds of literary material, including miracle stories, parables, sayings, and accounts of Jesus’s birth, death, and resurrection. Each gospel presents a different and unique portrait of Jesus of Nazareth.
