Hi, Robyn! Having good comprehension is a great start! If you'd like an assessment to identify any phonics gaps, please check out this page: www.risingreadersparentacademy.com/help-your-struggling-reader ☺
With school evaluations in the US, you want to do these in writing (or by email) so there is a trail of what has been asked for and when it was asked. This would be a special education evaluation. The school needs written permission from parents for this so if the school comes to you for an evaluation if they saw an issue, you need to sign off that this is allowed.
I knew someone who at eight years old could only read word-sounds mechanically, never hearing them as actual words. I had the privilege of buying him the book he was reading, and actually being there as well, when it finally started to click! It was probably two or three years later when I was at that family's house and saw he was reading a book from the high school library as his homework, because his school didn't have a reading group for him. Sometimes it's just a simple matter, like having the right synapses finally connect, or finding a teacher or a book that explains things in just the right way, or maybe of learning just enough to get unfrustrated enough to learn more.
Going through this now 😢 my 7 yr old comprehends well but she’s failing her test because she’s struggling to read. Her school wants to evaluate her to she if there’s a reason why she can’t read fluently yet. She’s in tutoring now and I also try to make reading fun but all she wants to do is play.
That must be so difficult for you both, Kay! That's great that the school is being proactive. If you'd ever like to chat more about your situation, please feel free to email me! alison@learningattheprimarypond.com ❤

Hi Alison! I am so glad i came across your video and its heartening to see you do reply to the questions and queries put forth to you, unlike many other youtubers. I have subscribed to you. My son was a premie and has had significant speech delay. He is on speech therapy and only started saying half sentences at 5 years old. He still struggles with sounds like he cannot sound out "g" and says "j" . There are several other sound substitutions in his speech. So teaching him reading has been a challenge. He will turn 6 next month and start 1st grade soon. I don't want him to struggle in reading or get left behind. I have started sitting with him to teach him blending as he is struggling with it. He gets confused with the vowel sounds that come in CVC words. Now he is beginning to get frustrated and not want to try. I also have to practice speech sounds with him which his speech therapist gives. Its becoming overwhelming for both of us. 😞 Please share some tips for reading for kids with speech delay. Thank you.

what if you can't get them to sit longer than 20 minutes?
15-20 minutes is a great amount of time to start. Your child should build stamina over time, but it's normal for attention span to be short when they're young. 😊
I love the game as a place to start, got you a "Like" and "Subscribe"
Thank you so much!
My 7yr old will count the number of letters in the word and then say that is too many to sound out. It becomes a whole event. Frustrating
I know how frustrating that can be. I'm happy to send you some things to try! Please email alison@learningattheprimarypond.com ❤

What if your child is 8 years old but is delayed to a 4 year old???
People that have a single parent family this would be hard for.
These tips will definitely work in that situation, too, Robin! ❤

Too late for us
It's never too late to learn to read! ❤️
In our part of the world if your child is a slow learner, that child becomes the mockery of the class. Most teachers don't care
I'm so sorry to hear that! I sincerely hope things can change wherever you are.
huh i dont spek english i i.m from pilipines this 🇵🇭🇵🇭
Thank you for watching!
I wouldn't listen to Her. Taking quick action is wrong. My parents have tried to be hurtful and mean and try to force it if they did not. I would have already learned how to read a long time ago as a child.
With autistic kids it’s so hard
Tqvm, cant wait for your next video , but how do i get the free guide? Where is the link🫢
