That was fun and what was really cool to see was the sportsmanship at the end with the high 5's and congrats and happy faces and the hugs to the horses.
This was excellent! Seems like this track has found another way to draw in people..if they expand on this and just have one "novelty race" per week...From Shires to Shetlands...to Friesians...to Vanners! Spotlight just one breed at each special race. Perhaps rotate the special races from month to month. Another "novelty race" could be golden ager TB's? The possibilities are endless!
Luv your comment. I told everyone at my yard that my two Clydesdales were racehorses and they didn't believe me. Patrick and Saxon were nicknamed Red Rum' and 'Desert Orchid' in a sarcastic way. No one laughing at them now...LOL
That's so well said - couldn't have put it better myself. These animals are well loved and well taken care of. Two of them are stallions, there are not many pure shire stallions left so no way would they be put at risk. The organiser of this race bred one of them herself (his dad also raced). As she puts it "he literally fell into my lap the day he was born and he's been there ever since!" they have an amazing relationship. This was not about money or exploitation.
Carolan - the jockeys certainly remarked they were the biggest saddles and the widest mounts they had sat on for a long time! We're looking forward to the second running of the race again this year - date to be confirmed, but most likely in June as last year. :)
I have had so much grief from TB owners about my wonderful 'heavy horse'. I live down the road from Lingfield and one of the shires due to run went lame. I was asked if my beloved Patrick would stand in. Patrick is a Clydesdale but no-one would have noticed except another Clydie owner. Anyway, they found another Shire (damn) otherwise my Patrick would have been a famous racehorse for a day! Wonderful...LOL
Nicest thing about this race is that every single one of those jockeys had a smile on their face at the end of the race. It only happens when you ride a genuine Heavy Horse. 'Flying Feathers' refers to the hairy legs of these fabulous animals.
I know my horse gallops when he wants to gallop and turns me into the jockey in his frolic! He love galloping! Especially with other horses, he is Herd Bound.
That is a rather bold assertion to make, especially since you fail to provide one shred of evidence that the horses involved were in any way harmed or distressed.
ninet111 you don't get it do you, horse owners, & people like me who spend our working lives LOOKING AFTER horses & ponies, do so because we love them, & take great pride in the animals under our care....& a well kept horse, with comfortable saddlery or harness benefits from being kept active & occupied, same as humans do. & it's a rare horse that doesn't enjoy a good old gallop, especially in company of other horses !
Also I'd like to hear the jockeys opinions on what it felt like to ride the big guys in this race! They arte used to race cars...and this time they "drove" Humvees!!
hahaha, cute! Rider 1: Hey, my guys been behind my leg all day, want to tack up in our dressage gear and race? Rider 2: Shit yea, why not, let me go get my worst outfit, meet you out there at 3, let's do thiiiiiis.
I thought this was fun for both horses and people. Have a I missed anything? No horse were injured and seems not stressed. I mean even this breed of horse gallops well at times so it's not forced to move in a gait that is unnatural.
I must have missed something?? Who is JOEY?? To the person said that "heavy horses" are endangered, not so much. Draft horses are all over the world!!! They are not seen as much as the smaller breeds. Get your stuff right before you put drivel in the comment box!!!
There is no cruelty here. No whips were used. I know each of these animals and they were not asked to do anything I have not seen them do au natrel when they gallop across the open fields where they live. This was an event to promote the Shire as an endangered species in the UK. They are NOT racehorses.
That was fun and what was really cool to see was the sportsmanship at the end with the high 5's and congrats and happy faces and the hugs to the horses.
That was lovely! What a beautiful sight! And all the jockeys looked liked they really enjoyed it!
Awwwww. Soooo cute! Thanks for putting this up:) The announcer did a great job:)

Brilliant. They looked like they loved it.
Shires are awesome!! I would jockey for these big boys any day!

Now THIS is amazing! I wanna go at shire racing!!! :O

Cracking race!

"tarting" stalls! lol. Great Typo. you should have seen the yard in the morning, definitely "tarting" stalls. :)
Hahahaha, racing Shires. This is cool!
That is a rather bold assertion to make, especially since you fail to provide one shred of evidence that the horses involved were in any way harmed or distressed.
it's a bit of fun! they used to race draught horses on beaches
I'd give my right nut to try this! I've mostly ridden Clydesdales, and would love to do something like this on one!
put on at really race. in winter. i enjoy it
All Shires. Although I would sign up for a Clydie race (well, if I had a Clydie to race!)
WOW!!!! real life "War Horses"
So cute!
beautiful sight :)
Wonderful fun! Are they all Shires? A couple look very much like Clydesdales.

My friend was one of the people in red;)
Can you imagine the sound? It must sound like thunder.
Well that looks like fun,
Must have felt like an earthquake, if you were next to the rail as they thundered past !
This is hilarious!! Not just for thoroughbreds (and arabs) after all then! :')
There's always one, isn't there?!
lovely.. bet they tec sum keeping..
Omg hahahahah brilliant!
That is soo great! Hahaha :D
hehe,,,i know this doesn't seem like the right word to use...but i thought that was bloody adorable seeing those shires trying so hard
They obviously don't fit into the tarting stalls. Brilliant.
hahaha, cute! Rider 1: Hey, my guys been behind my leg all day, want to tack up in our dressage gear and race? Rider 2: Shit yea, why not, let me go get my worst outfit, meet you out there at 3, let's do thiiiiiis.

HAHa omg I laughed soo hard XD
And also no whips were carried during the Shire Race :)
How is it cruel? If a horse doesn't want to run, it won't. No whips were used here.
Shires can be black or bay, you just usually see them black.
heh, its like truck racing.
Where was the cruelty? I don't think I saw any whips being used...
um i now want a shire?
This does NOT look like a comfortable ride for the jockeys! :D
I must have missed something?? Who is JOEY?? To the person said that "heavy horses" are endangered, not so much. Draft horses are all over the world!!! They are not seen as much as the smaller breeds. Get your stuff right before you put drivel in the comment box!!!
who followed the link off facebook in the tailored equestrian page thumbs up my comment if you did

HUH?
ooops lol.

WRONG! More like freight train racing....LOL
This is so weird to me
