Truth be told the ones driving these tactics would have all firearms out of the hands of the "common citizen" all together! Just my opinion.
Thank you Bait Ammo - I understand that emotions run high when tragedy strikes - but to commit wanton destruction when people have been innocently collecting, cherishing and using guns for hundreds of years...well it just makes no sense. We over here had no idea how out of hand things have gone.
I have an original Model 1897 (1913 built.) which needs major restoration work before it's usable. I bought a Chinese made 1897 a few years ago to get familiar with the model, and was pleasantly surprised. Mechanically fine, well fitting Turkish walnut and threaded for Beretta choke tubes! The only thing needing remedy was an atrocious rubber recoil pad, removed and replaced with a reproduction Winchester butt plate. It is an excellent buckshot gun with an improved cylinder choke in place of the modified tube supplied. Apparently, the gun retailer I purchased it from had their own gunsmith overseeing production at the Chinese factory.
H&R 1871 Pardner Pump Security shotgun, I own one. Bought it at Dick's before tha pandemic. They're good ... I have hundreds of rounds through it and all is well. I replaced the plastic magazine follower with an aluminum aftermarket one and added a heat shield. It been excellent with no malfunctions, cycles everything well.
I had one of the Norinco 1897 Trenchguns when I was a kid but my dad sold it off because of reports of some exploding and didn't want to risk it. It worked fine for me and was fun to shoot. That and the SPAS-12 are two shotguns I wish my father hadn't sold off.
I fully sympathize with the Firearms community of New Zealand. We had to suffer the same nonsense in the UK. The Firearms amendment act, introduced in 1997 made nearly all handguns illegal as well as a variety of other types as well. Hopefully New Zealand avoids doing that with those fine old guns. That being said I think it is important that people understand that New Zealanders are reacting psychologically in a similar manner as Americans did to 9/11. There are negative things that happen, terrible laws that end up getting passed (and rarely removed) in a rash fashion with little thought, etc., because voters like to see action in such instances. For example, in the United States we got two forever wars that are still going on the American credit card, a proxy war with Iran for control of Iraq, the United States using Torture, and numerous other things all resulting from rash actions taken after 9/11. Those Chinese made shotguns aren't half-bad, and if a person is going into cowboy action shooting I would think they would make a great starting point. What amazes me is that a company such as Uberti hasn't taken advantage of that market by making a reproduction 97 Winchester tuned for it.
