  • In this video I make a London Pattern Chisel Handle. This doesn't have to be hard. With a basic lathe, a scroll chuck, a drill chuck and just 3 tools: a roughing gouge, a detail gouge and a parting tool.

That is a really nice little lathe you have there. Nice work

those turned out nice. I think the London pattern is the ultimate. classy yet able to have a commanding grip if need be, and extremely comfortable.

Pretty simple as I imagined, I might just make one for the new chisel I got from the flea market. I know it deserves a handle, that thing took considerably longer to sharpen than the store bought chisels I bought, that I ended up modifying into turning knives.

I need a lathe..... I've been buying London Pattern handles for my chisels, I'd like to make my own so I can choose the wood. You made it look very easy.
    Thanks for this 😁

I can get the same results... ...3 hours later... ....maybe hahahaha. This is quite amazing how fast this man can do this with no wasted movements at all!!!

Thanks for sharing this video. You explained everything clearly and in a way that wasn't intimidating - I really want to do this now :) What size was your turning blank please?

Just curious, wouldn't the live center being pushed into the drilled hole expand the diameter of the hole? Couldn't you have done everything and then drilled out at the end to maintain an accurate hole?

Yes, it will tend to push out the hole especially before ferrule is put on. Not so much pressure when it is clamped in a scroll chuck. the drill will wander if done afterwards. something about the stationary bit and the spinning wood. Its definitely better on the lathe.

Thank you. What are the dimensions or proportions?

    • @iwrightwycliffe

Dimensions are only approximate. made to suit particular chisels to the eye is the main guid. The only essentials are ferrule inner diameter.

I always thought it was ferrule, not ferrile.

Nope, missed ! your blade end is too rounded for my taste and the ferrule is very small, good job if they suit your hands though.
