    You two look like a very nice couple. Great looking build. I might mention I heated my shop
    With a wood stove for a few years. I have since converted my heater to wast oil burner. My
    Reason two things. Much easier to regulate heat, your not continue-less feeding the fire. Waist motor oil is also free, with not all the ash you have to clean out. It is very easy & cheap to do. You can do it in a way as to be able to use wood or oil or both if you choose.
    There are tons of videos on UA-cam as to how to do it. Hope this helps!👍

    It looks great. I made a double barrel wood stove for my shop. I got a magnetic snap disc and put on the inlet to my bottom barrel so when the temp. get above 110-120 degrees the fan comes on automatically and shuts off around 90. It helps to let you know it needs more wood and letting it go at night will shut off the fan when the fire goes out.

    Did you put a damper in the 6 inch exhaust pipe, I don't remember seeing one. Having one you can really keep the fire and heat inside the wood stove longer during the night. Love that design and you did a nice job. I built several wood stoves over the years, different types. My favorite ones I added thermostats so if the box was hot the blower came on, when box cooled off the blower went off.

    I like your technique of using extra rod with your mig. lol.. I do that all the time;
    I always save any old crusty stick rods that are crumbling, with the flux falling off, etc.. and I'll use them in that way; like a tig rod. I do it while stick welding too.. or with the mig, like you did. Great stove. Cheers

    Always good to see julie. Hope all is well. You can make your own fire starters by using sawdust and melted wax. Put them in a muffin pan or a small form. Always start with smaller wood on the bottom and use bigger pieces on top.

    It may sound counter productive but you will get more heat by running the fan on low rather than high. I have been heating with wood for over 20 years. Wife and I never opted for central heating and air.😂

    Looks good, the draft optimally should pass air at bottom of fire so you can increase burn rate as needed. I use a little used motor oil on some kindling and a propane torch to start my stove, the oil just burns longer to get it going. Wood is getting to be a pain for the duration of winter temps up north so probably going to build a waste oil stove next year.
    Happy Thanksgiving !

    Hit up your local furnace store and and pick up a couple one to put on the heat exchanger and one to move air off and around the the building past it makes a huge difference. I make fire lighter candles pill cup, wood chips from a sharp chain saw ( large chips) work best, wax and a candle wick works great. Or a pile of shredded paper that you don't want to get out in the public. Or another idea there is another youtuber in PA (outdoors with the Morgans) makes and sells fire starter that work really well to. Nice to see Julie hope all is well

    Also-- One other thing you can do, is to drill a couple half inch holes through the front cover.. towards the top of the barrel, and put in a long pipe all along the top, and drill little holes all through it------ then you put some sort of valve or plate on the front of the holes, so that you can vary the inflow....... This is for a "secondary burn" ----- Fires are not 100% efficient, so there will still be a lot of hot gasses in the top of the barrel, and they just end up going out of the chimney.... If you put a few of these pipes along the top (with random little holes drilled in it) - each little hole will have a little flame coming off of it, like a gas stove.. . It just introduces fresh oxygen to mix with that extra gas cloud in the top and it will burn all that extra fuel (when the fire is hot enough)... Super easy to do-- You can just drill your holes front and back and stick your pipe all the way through, and then weld around it on both ends, to seal it.. (and cap the back end)... Then you just need some simple way to open and close them -- with another slider or whatever you want to build, along the front. Very good upgrade to a stove like this. This is all that the fancy "efficiency" stoves do.. Plus you can build a shield into the top of it too, to capture the heat before it escapes straight out of the pipe; (which you clearly already understand this idea, by how you built your baffles for the fan.)

    • @HardCoreFab
      @HardCoreFab  Місяць тому

      This is interesting I might give it a try when it warms up

    • @calholli
      @calholli Місяць тому

      @@HardCoreFab Yeah.. there are plenty of videos on here showing different ways people have done it.... It's especially good at getting more heat out of smaller fires, and making your wood go further.......... another thing I like to do is put a 2" or even 3" pipe right along the peak of the barrel (also on the inside)-- and on each end -- turn up with an elbow-- so they they stick up like little short chimneys: and you can fill that tube with water; this way it will boil off and put out some steam as you're burning -- and keep the shop/house from getting so dry. Because wood stoves will suck all the water out of the air and make it really dry and your lips are cracking and it's just kinda miserable........... So that tube is like a built in humidifier. Another easy upgrade-- very useful. So you're not only controlling the temperature-- you can control the humidity also. Get yourself a little $5 thermometer/ humidity gauge set.. and you can track them both very easily... Just adjust how much water you add to it. Simple, but makes a huge difference.

    You should just put your fan on low... It's plenty of air, and less noise.
    Honestly.. It would be best to just hook up a proper switch for it... At least have high and low. So you can turn it down and lower the annoying noise.. I bet it's not really helping much anyway, on high vs low... Because your pathway it probably too restrictive.. So just running it on low should be the best bet, IMO........ It would almost be better to just set the fan to blow right above the stove -- and then it will have some force and actually push some of that heat across the shop....

    • @HardCoreFab
      @HardCoreFab  Місяць тому +1

      Now that I have used it for a while I can say that high VS low really doesn't change much. You have costs that you are ignoring to include along with labor etc. There are a bunch of folks on the Tube that make the same claims about free heat. If the gas company supplied me with free gas for my heat , I still wouldn't be able to honestly make a video showing my nice toasty warm gas stove and say I have free heat. Too many other things in the mix to make that claim.
