  • One of the most expensive purchases a person will ever make is the home that they live in, and it’s important to make the right choice. It’s a place that grants you privacy from the wider world, and is where you can be the true you without outside interference… and, as you develop it, will become a representation of who you are. While most buildings keep to certain expectations, however, there are those that push the limits of design and taste. This is an approach that creates incredible spaces, but also one that can result in something far less appealing. It’s time to travel the world to see some of the worst failures, as we take a look at the top 15 worst house designs.

    I think we both have very different definitions about what a "bad" house design is. I thought a lot of these were interesting, thought-provoking, and sometimes beautiful.

    The dumpster house would be heaven compared to a cardboard box, a tent, or even under a bridge. Those would be great if they were in big cities. I know I would have loved one, clean one, when I was homeless. I’m not that way now but I would have wanted one.

    • @DebSherr

      I'm glad you're doing ok, no one should be homeless ever. The dumpster house is pretty cool. It was featured in a few consecutive episodes of ' 2 Broke Girls ' on network television. You can probably find a clip on UA-cam of the characters having a party inside the dumpster house. This video doesn't really show the inside in action. In the episode, the guy who lived in the dumpster was the son of a billionaire who wanted to be close to Max, his humble but hardworking girlfriend. Once she found out he was rich and met his family, Max and her entrepreneurial partner in the cupcake business Carolyne, got him stoned on serious weed. While he was passed out, the two girls pushed the dumpster house with him in it, back to the rich, Upper East Side where his wealthy parents and he lived. The character and the dumpster were never seen again!

      I am glad that you have a home now, Ms. Fehrle. No one should live without their own home. I, too, was homeless many years ago and I know how terrible it is not to be able to go inside your safe place and simply lock the door.
      May life continue to treat you well. Be blessed.

      Honestly, if copies of the dumpster house could be produced cheaply and placed somewhere safe, it would be great short-term housing for people who would otherwise be homeless. Though I imagine a lot of cities would not leap to have something like a whole lot of dumpster homes in the middle of their downtown area.

    I don't know if I would call most of these designs bad, as opposed to intriguing and artistic, especially when we are seeing so many people downsizing their homes. Some of these I would definitely consider as a home, ESPECIALLY because they are unique and different.

    There is a round house in my home town of Urbana Illinois but it is not on legs, but dug into the ground. One of childhood friends lived there. Our own house was a new concept house that was built with concrete blue brick, had two fire places one upstairs and one the basement. Heating coils in the floor, and ice melting coils in the driveway. My father was a mechanical engineer and for the most part built it all by himself. He started it in 1950 and finished it in 1951 the year I was born. We eventually added a solar panel roof. He wrote two books on solar energy before it became popular.

    i live in MOntreal and let me tell you Habitat 67 is a masterpiece and is now some of the most sought after real estate in the city and yes it isn't the social housing it was intended to be but it is revered.

  • @amberkat8147
    @amberkat8147 2 роки тому +4

    I like Habitat 67- the stepped design means if there's a massive fire you could drop from unit to unit to the ground. You might want to keep an extendable ladder on hand, but I'd take it over an ugly and dangerous high-rise any day. Not sure how it would fare in an earthquake, tornado or hurricane. Hopefully it's sturdy enough to handle those. But I like the overall intent, and it looks like the units have more privacy and airflow than regular apartments.

    The English "crematorium" is so typical of "council" housing for the poor. These ugly and depressing heaps were lauded by the country's leading architects who despise traditional building materials and design. The brooding and shodding-looking creations WERE shoddy and soon developed all sorts of problems just like the creations of that self-proclaimed "genius", Le Corbusier. Modern architects do not respect the needs of their clients or the nature of the surrounding neighborhoods because it is all about their "groundbreaking genius". Have you seen recent photos of the Houses of Parliament? Huge bizarre and wonky buildings now loom behind them and dominate the skyline. Londoners hate them and give them demeaning nicknames like The Walkie Talkie and The Glass Testicle and those architectural awfuls deserve it.

    Upon seeing the "Fat House" (Number 7), I initially thought that it looked like it was made out of snow (very poorly made), and that it could be the house of Olaf from Disney's animated movie, "Frozen" (when he wasn't at the beach getting a tan anyways)! 😝

    Some of the designs I really like; The Steel House, (must be heavily insulated though, or it would get as hot as an oven in there), and the Dome Houses with naturally insulated roofs.. The Shiga house in Japan was imo very well designed for such a narrow space. I can imagine however that for someone with a more traditional taste, these concepts are not aesthetically pleasing.. The leaning apartment buildings..bad construction that should NEVER be allowed anywhere- they should be condemned!! Some designs stretch the bad design concept as they're exhibition pieces, and the dumpster house seems like a statement, or a personal challenge. Oh and, beauty is in the eye of the beholder..

    The narrator apparently has never been homeless; every house on here, except the Keret house in Poland, would be most welcome to anyone who's experienced homelessness---I know from firsthand experience!---and some of them would be perfectly fine as permanent homes.
    Also, the house in Shiga, Japan, is much more than the awful narrative states; the house has more room than is shown in the poor photos, and the family that had it built originally made it into a really beautiful, light-filled space for themselves. Unfortunately, there's only this dreary clip of it here, but if one can find it, there's an entire article on it showcasing its amazingly compact, but very useful, design and layout.

    I recall Expo '67 and l'Habitat. This Israeli architect saw this creation as cutting edge. It turned out that many of its inhabitants grew to hate the place. That now it's expensive to live there comes from the place's uniqueness and l would say snob appeal. So with Le Courbusier's l'Unite in France, it too failed to achieve its original purpose, namely to provide mass housing. The people who had to live there hated living there and now the ugly place is full of cultured snobs who feel that they are basking in the "genius" of the cold-hearted egotist who built it.

    • @jb6712
      @jb6712 2 роки тому +3

      I'm sure it does---but homelessness is far worse than living inside any kind of steel dwelling. Been there, know it firsthand. Desperation means people will seek out any reasonable form of shelter to get through life.
      I had my car to live in; not the greatest space, but because I was working, I also had a place to take a shower every day, and to get all the meals I wanted (I worked in a hospital). Most homeless people don't have even that, so living in a steel shelter might be the only solution some may have for now.

      Actually, once he did that, he caught the interest of a number of architects and architectural students and a number of dumpster-houses were made. I have no idea if they ever got used, or what happened to them, not being anywhere near NYC, but it was an interesting concept, and the group really did a great job of turning the dreary boxes into light-filled, airy spaces that were far, FAR better than sleeping on the streets!
