Specific rotation

The number of degrees that the plane of polarization is rotated as the light passes through a solution of an enantiomer depends on the number of chiral molecules that it encounters. To normalize optical rotation data relative to experimental variables such as tube length and concentration of the enantiomer, chemists calculate a quantity called specific rotation.
