You get bread from the bakery and meat from the butcher's and bring your own (reusable) wrapper or lunch box or tupperware to transport it home. Easy peasy.
And, ugh, my German heart wept when you threw the content of the waste jar all into *one* trash can. In Germany, you meticulously sort your trash.
In the US it’s hard to find shops like that. Most places to get food are supermarkets, which use a lot of packaging. In my town, there is only one stand alone butcher shop and no stand alone bakeries. I guess it’s a cultural difference. I wish the US was more like Europe because of this!
PotterheadGeeK7 it’s the same in Sweden
@@margaretlyons9494 I can't believe you guys don't have butchers, fishmongers, bakery and markets! Here in Greece city centres are filled with them, you can't avoid them! Also we have markets almost constantly, and their location about the city/area will change day by day on a weekly cycle.
Even our supermarkets, many of which are family owned ( of course we still have big chains in every city, but what I'm going to say still applies to these) have a proper butchers section and many a bakery.
But the actual butchers, fishmongers and bakeries give a nice community vibe. Shame you don't have them
In Brazil we have butcheries and bakeries too, they use plastic bag but it's all negotiable, customer's never wrong.
Canada is LOADED with butchers and bakeries ❤️ love being able to get fresh foods for minimal waste. I run a food prep business so I try really hard to sort all the trash and food scraps
Beeswax wraps are super easy to make, just need pretty fabric (can be bought with no packaging) and beeswax you can usually find in blocks or pellets at the local farmers market with no packaging as well. Just melt the wax on top and it's super cheap to make a ton of wraps!
Jessica Raine wow this is interesting.
Jessica Raine you can also cut up old T-shirts and make them out of those! Super easy and helps save resources
You guys just saved me like $50 and several weeks of waiting for beeswax wraps to arrive! Thanks!
I’ll try that thanks
Loveee this idea! 👏🏻
I think we can all relate to emo Jackson

Jorja Boyd But yeah but she said she hoped tho, that doesnt mean he didn’t
Jennifer Huang thanks 👍
Omg
But did Jackson bring home the bees wax sandwich wrapper? 😄
I was asking myself the same thing!! That's eating me alive hahaha
She comments in the video if he was to throw it away there would have been a problem, so it seems by her statement that it wasn’t thrown away after all 🤔
Heather D “would have been a problem” so she was saying that he did bring it home.
He did

Ok but can we talk about how goals Hannah’s hair is
Hannah! You can try getting zero waste meat if you go to the butcher shop. They might look at you weird for bringing your own containers but at least you'll remain zero waste :)
trying to lower your impact by eating meat is a little hypocritical
@@ZaneTaylorMusic you are clearly vegetarian/vegan. I will admit, meat from big stores like walmart or costco may not be ethically sourced or local, but from a butcher shop, at least you can ask where it came from, what the animal was fed and how it was treated.
I agree that local farms can provide a better quality of life, but that still doesn't reduce the amount of food and water it takes to feed a cow until they're fully grown.
@@ZaneTaylorMusic what about people that water their lawn, you hate those people too?
Wow some people clearly didnt do their research... @zane is right, mabye you could do a bit more research before you judge
The fact you reduced your waste so much just for a week is awesome especially as a family keep it up ❤

Add essential oils to your cleaner to make it smell nice!! Certain essential oils can also double as bug repellent too. HOWEVER, do research as some can harm your furry friends.
I let orange or lemon peels soak in vinegar to infuse the vinegar with the citrus oils. It makes it clean better and smell a bit better. I also add citrus oils to my cleaning vinegar sometimes.
Most essential oils come in containers that will go into the landfill so i would encourage looking into companies that will refill or make your own

You can reuse the takeout containers we have a ton of free 'Tupperware'
Thats not too healthy. Not with the sof plastic like the containers you get from take away or like bottles. The plastik melts with timw and releases toksins. So its ok for a few uses but should be thrown out after that. Sadly
@@anasuncana What if you only use for cold stuff? Then the plastic doesn't melt. I don't put super thin bowls in the microwave because they get to bendy.
@@SAK556 its not like actual melting its like little layers of plastic sort of fall of the edge and into your food. For example using the same plastic bottle for a long time is also not good. I mean its not deadly but its not ideal.
@@anasuncana Oh well. I have used same tupperware for years and am ok.... so i shall continue
@@anasuncana
I don't use it for hot food.
If my uncooked cheese and eggs are hot I have bigger problems then trying to get free Tupperware 😁
I also use the cool looking ones (some local businesses containers are different colors) I use them when I give away cookies (red and green containers)
To be able to ice the cookies (which I do) they have to be cold.
I know all about the poisoning of certain plastics I never microwave in them that's what microwave-safe plates and bowls are for...
Any thing that can be recycled, meaning you reuse at home or send to a center doesn't truly count as waste. So the cardboard parts of packages count as recycling. Same thing with paper.
JustRonnie K I don’t disagree with you, but I’d like to point out that to make these things and to recycle them they often use fuel, so unfortunately recycling isn’t 100% perfect for the environment. Buying things with reusable containers is is a lot better.
Aren't people really worried about using paper though because of deforestation?
You can recycle those cardboard boards from the reusable produce bags. Waste free people still recycle.
Don't think they know that but in some jurisdictions that stuff is not recyclable. If their city is cheap and sells to China, that stuff ain't recyclable. They'll only take clean Kraft cardboard with no printing on it.
i didn’t know that! that’s actually really interesting... thanks for the intel

Brooke Eels it’s just called a person who is successful in life unlike you and I not spending too much time on UA-cam. You just don’t have a life. Everyone is allowed to have their opinion, so let them have their opinion. Your allowed to have your opinion too but not when your not letting someone else have their opinion. 😡
I love this series! No aspiring pop stars or actors, just an ordinary lady living her best life with her family, it's refreshing. I'm really invested in their shenanigans and her kids are so sweet!
I can never be zero waste because I already am trash

Yeah but remember you are organic, you could be easily composted.
Nemi- Ru not with all the MSG, chemicals and hormones from the junk crap I eat
oof. that's a major mood
Hannah: “what is that?”
Wyatt: “dats a potato”
Me:😂😂😂😂😂😂
Our city has a city wide composting system. We have a large green bin along with our garbage bin. we have a smaller compost bin for under our sink. All our food waste and packaging is accepted, along with our yard waste. I live in Canada, so in the winter it only goes out every other week, but in the summer it goes out every week. We also have recycling for all of our plastics and paper products. Our green bin goes out every time we are allowed to put it out and we usually have two bags of recycling. One usually is my Grandma's, who is 93. She collects her recyclables and we bring it to our house. At her apartment there is nothing like that.
Angela Lake u awake

Try living $5 A day..per person
(Edit: Thanks so much for the likes, hope they do it soon :) )
I don’t see how that is possible but it would be interesting.
Clint Woodley that’s possible lol
Clint Woodley I live on $5/day and often only end up spending $3/day. It is very easy if you're vegan.
Speaking Truth yeah true 😂
Our low impact family spends about $2/day per person. It's not hard once you cut plastic packaging & meat
Some tips for food! For fast food: bring your own plates and cups/bottles. Also im from canada and we have a store called bulk barn where food, snacks, pasta, and ingreidents are in giant contanors and you scoop out how ever much you want and put it your own resuable bag and they weigh how much you picked and charge you that way. Also local bakerys and stuff have bread and you can bring your own bag to put it in
ash I love bulk barn 😍🤤
A significant amount of grocery stores here in the US have bulk bins.
I miss bulk barn 😭😭😭😭😭
I'm from the States, but I have to say I LOVE Bulk Barn. Closest thing to me would be Whole Foods' bulk bins. (Fairway has them too, but WF has more variety.)
@@averycee5192 thats true, i forgot about those!
Gabbie just did this she went to lush for her shampoos and wash stuff because they have the little tins for the soaps that you can bring back and put new bars in it just for future reference ☺️ also some grocers have the area where you get fresh cut meats and you can go to that counter with your own container and get meats like chicken beef etc. They may look at you weird but they should do it.
This is the beauty of going zero waste. It is a gradual transition as you learn and adjust. No one is perfect and as long as you make a solid attempt it is better than no doing anything.
Hannah: This seems like a lot of trash
Me: *sweating nervously* god I'm disgusting
9:11 “that’s a potato!” hahahahah
😂
Wondering why you didn't try to recycle the cardboard and aluminum foil instead of tossing it in the bin.
Edit: Not to say that I'm not amazed by the effort and how much you accomplished, its just that last little bit shouldn't have been that much more effort.
Also, the takeout containers looked recyclable to me. When I get take out they usually have the recycle symbol.
Raquel Ramon it depends what the number inside of the symbol is as to whether it can actually be recycled
Some of the takeout containers could’ve also been re used.
@@caitlynaasman284 i have a stock of takeout containers (esp the soup ones) that I use for leftovers and/or bulk shopping. The soup containers are honestly so easy to take to the bulk store bc they nest so well when empty, so they dont take up a bunch of room if I dont fill them.
Doesn't recycling cost money yo get it picked up
I feel like lush would be good for zero waste because of its "naked" products
I think Ladylike used some Lush products when they did their zero waste beauty.
It is but lush is quite expensive
Good idea
@@princessaurora6060
Yeah. But the prices are understandable.
Perfect for Wyatt
I love she actually understands thay jackson wants to be alone sometimes and doesnt force him to be happy
You can make a small composting bin at home with a five gallon bucket. So you take a 5 gallon bucket, and drill lots of small holes into it, except for the lid. You start it with a little bit of mulch and little tree trimmings and grass cuttings. About every other day, roll it around on the ground. After a little bit, you can put food scraps into it. You will want to put eggshell cartons in it, as it will help stabilize the moisture. This will turn into dirt that is very nutritious for plants. You can up size this by drilling holes in a metal trash can, but use bungee cords to hold on the lid when holding. Corrine from Threadbanger has a really good video about this.
I think Jackson just needed a nap. No matter what age you are, sleep always fixes everything. ♡
How come it won't fix my grades, life, financial issues, and how tired I am though?
All of your cardboard and most of your plastic can be sent to a recycling facility. I dont know about the states, but in Canada, most major supermarkets have large bins set up in their back lots for customers to use for their recycling. You're plastic take out containers can be washed and used for holding small, loose objects like Lego, pencils and marbles. Paper towel are actually compostable. Instead of getting meat from a grocery store, go to a butcher. You can bring your own glass/plastic or bees wax wrap containers for them to pack your meat in.
I'm in Canada and I've never heard about the recycling bins at grocery stores lol.
For the pumpkin compost stuff, I always make roasted pumpkin seeds, you dry them overnight then, put olive oil, salt, pepper, and paprika. Then put them in the oven.
WHEN YOU HAVE TO GET YOUR KIDS UP IN 4 HRS FOR SCHOOL AND YOUR STILL UP WATCHING HANNAH!!! SO RELATE ABLE AND MAKES ME THINK I CAN DO THIS STUFF TO, EVERY VIDEO IS LITERALLY SOMETHING I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT OR WANTED ME FAMILY TO TRY!!! SUCH A GOOD SERIES!
9:09 thank you for drawing me
Lmao
Whole Foods has compost collection programs in many large cities (and possibly smaller ones too) FYI! No need to go to shady meetups to drop off your organic waste :)
My town collects compost the same way they collect garbage. We have equal size garbage bins, compost bins and recycling bins. Maybe one day it'll be something more governments will do!

“What is that wyatt “? ... “ a potato “ literally the cutest thing ever😭😍
oh, don't mind me. I am just rewatching every single Hannah-Video unti there's a new one.

Danielle Is that why Jackson is 'emo' now ??😶😂
They believe that the house is haunted, go onto buzzfeed unsolved and look for Hannah's house
It was just for show... now it is declared not haunted.
Tip: Don’t use vinegar on quartz/granite/marble countertops - it ruins them over time.
Oh thanks
The whole food thing is recyclable and when you bought takeout, the bowls that they gave you are reusable. Reason: let’s say you want to give some food to your friends and you have nothing to put it in, use the leftover takeout bowls and then they can keep it instead of using your glass containers and then have to return it.
I absolutely love Hannah and her mother skills. Such a beautiful and positive role model xoxo
This outro was the best I’ve seen from Hannah! I wanna be like her when I grow up!! Love it
Hannah : "at this point I have no shame anymore, you know?"
Same girl same...
“ThAtS a PoTaTo!” Wyatt is so adorable 😂
Love wyatt's little "put it up"
Thing is though. It's fine to have waste that can be recyclable.
Paper towels, the packaging from the food bags, napkins, all recyclable
As for the take out, if they'd gone to McDonald's or somewhere similar the burgers are wrapped in recyclable paper, the bags are recyclable, the cups are recyclable, even the straws nowadays. The only thing that isn't is the lids on the drinks xx
Oh and in the UK, most bread is in plastic but a lot of brands come in paper packaging which is recyclable
“At this point I have no shame anymore, you know” felt thattttt
Hannah's not just the okest mom but she is also the coolest mom.
Hey Hannah! You should do a challenge with your family where you try living in a bus/van you can look up on UA-cam tiny house life or Bus life etc. I'm not Entirely Sure how you will figure out how to do this maybe you can reach out to someone and borrow their bus/van for a week but I for sure would watch it!! WHAT IF JACKSON WAS THINKING OF THE LITTLE GIRL CALLED MATILDA
I swear that it was Wyatt that saw her
gothic bxtch no it was jackson lol
Hannah is so sweet she's just the perfect mom
I think it’s so cool that you always do research in advance to be as successful as possible
Most paper towels are able to go in a compost bin and I use compost paper bags and keep them in the freezer so it doesn’t smell. But you should search it up to see the rules of compost bins.😉
I use a vinegar, water, essential oil and dish soap for all purpose cleaner
All I could think of was the ghosts in the house.
I’m proud of everyone who really tries to waste less💗🌱
I know it’s two years after this video, but bakeries are an awesome resource to get bread without packaging. Going to the source themselves, they typically have unpacked goods and package to order. You can also occasionally find butchers, cheesemongers, and fishmongers who will use your reusables!

Honestly Jackson just loves everything his mom makes
I've been doing this for a little less than a year. No ziploc, glass container instead of plastic, bee wax wrap, thermos ,reusable bags for fruits and vegetable, stainless straws, etc. At first it cost me a lot of money to buy reusable stuffs but since then I saved so much and I feel good about my part for the environnement !
Hannah, it’s fine that you messed up a bit! It’s hard to go from a regular lifestyle with plastic and waste to a zero waste lifestyle! If you are considering this life style it’s better to cut it out slowly. I’m not and expert, just trying to work on this myself too❤️
Does she ... recycle?
Cause she keeps acting like she can’t recycle paper and that worries me.
Not paper towels or plastic wrapped cardboard
If it touches grease or food, you can’t recycle it, unfortunately. Does she compost? That might help.

I will say that quite literally the only downside to watching your videos is that I can't help but scroll down because this series tends to draw in some of the most judgemental commenters...
When will I learn to just click off instead of scrolling down?! 😂😂😂
i actually suggest bamboo towels there’s recycle-able ig i’ve never used them but i see them and their supposed to decompose better than paper towels
The thing with bamboo is that it's viscose and a lot of chemicals go into its processing.

I love this woman so much! She's such an amazing mother and the boys are gonna be so grateful when they grow up
Hey Hannah! We've been going zero waste as well. We have a little dog with incontinence issues. She doesn't always make it outside. We found compostable poop bags for when she poops. And we bought bright yellow towels for when she pees. We also got a small hamper just for these rags.
She does good for the most part but sometimes when we're gone a while she doesn't make it to the door. Just thought I'd share with you what we do.
