Written in 1924, Turandot is Puccini's last (and unfinished) opera, with Liù's 'Tu che di gel sei cinta' being the final aria the composer wrote. Sung immediately before her suicide, Liù explains to the Principessa Turandot it is her love for Calaf that enables her to keep her strength (and her silence) through the immense pain of torture, prophesying that the princess will even come to love him herself.
Although she does not experience the happily-ever-after ending she dreamt of with the man she loves, here, Liù ensures that she still has the final word. Truly demonstrating what deep and selfless love looks like, she bravely sacrifices her own life in order to save his - with the full knowledge that the man she is prepared to die for does not reciprocate her feelings. In singing this aria at her lowest point, Liù is able to take the highest possible ground before ending it all.
