Charity Mapletoft is a classical soprano and actress.
During the 2023 season, she made her Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Stiftung Mozarteum Groẞer Saal solo debuts to international critical acclaim, having been offered a series of summer and winter concerts due to her competition success - winning almost exclusively first and grand prizes in over forty international operatic competitions since 2021.
In addition to operatic and concert work, she has also acted in feature films including Muppets Most Wanted (2014), The Riot Club (2014) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Episode VIII) (2017), as well as taken lead roles in Back for the Future (2022), Track and Trace (2022) and The Female Gaze (2022).
Having obtained the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree while still a teenager, Charity currently holds the following qualifications with distinction: M. Mus.; B. Mus. (Hons.); LRAM (voice, soprano); LRSM (voice); DipABRSM (voice); DipABRSM (piano); LAMDA Gold Medal (acting).

You have a beautiful timbre! I have a technique question. I notice my jaw moves in vibrato, and even only singing for church and fun, it does bother me. I notice your jaw moves too. Should I be working to eliminate tension somewhere, or just accept it and move on?
Hello! Thank you so much for your question. This is difficult to answer without having heard you, but you should be able to find an answer yourself if you approach this by looking at a potential cause first. In my videos, you'll see a lot of very close-up shots to my face - with a camera zoom that is capable of capturing micro-movements that the human eye can't see. If you look at a more distant shot or even saw the performance in-person it would appear as if there were no movement - and the same goes for more famous opera singers you would have heard of - check out these: Renée Fleming: ua-cam.com/video/n43OCYB8YKg/v-deo.htmlsi=YSVlDcxXjc6YLCkF Joan Sutherland: ua-cam.com/video/5r4XJJYvnZE/v-deo.htmlsi=iF_ngTbnw8CMiMbg Luciano Pavarotti: ua-cam.com/users/shorts04yjG5z4W4U?si=3JrjTOKN4H6r2-a1 Laryngeal flexibility, air pressure, vowel modification, different coloratura techniques and even female genetics can all cause micro jaw movements, which are perfectly normal and natural - when you talk, your mouth does not remain still. 🙂 However, some questions to ask yourself are: 1. Do I feel free, or tense? 2. Is my timbre free and resonant? 3. Do I have good vocal stamina? If you're experiencing a lot of jaw movement that's very noticable then that could be due to a variety of things, including gripping at the jaw, larynx or abdomen, not supporting the sound correctly in another way, or a combination of factors. Maybe try a different approach to how you've been looking at it: instead of focussing on not liking how things look, consider focussing positively on your technique to feel more at ease and, consequently, allowing the sound to be free rather than attempting to 'get' a result. Conscious, slow breathing, both with and without vocalising may help a lot. If in doubt, hopefully your voice teacher can work with you on this. As mentioned, it's not really possible to give you a proper answer without having heard/seen you but I hope that helps.
