    This is our first Caldas da Rainha video, with 2 others uploaded, and 2 more coming soon!
    I love the fact that one of my favourite viewers of this video actually appears in our latest Caldas video, about the amazing monthly market in the beautiful Dom Carlos I park. Check it out and let us know what you think 😁😀:

    We moved to Caldas da Rainha one month ago from the UK, we are loving it. Great little city plus the closeness to great beaches such as Foz d’Arelho a ten minute drive away and the Obidos Lagoon has made this a great place to enjoy our retirement.

    The prices in Caldas are a frugal person's dream!!! Impressive use of Portuguese when ordering the olives...What is your secret? My Portuguese is not coming along at all, but I guess I have to put in a little more effort!!😉

      I totally agree with you, Tamara that Caldas is great value for money compared to many other Portuguese cities. Another great reason to go there!
      Thanks for the compliment. I'm learning Portuguese mainly by using free apps such as Duolingo, drops and memrise. It does require effort but is worth the time put in. I also watch UA-cam language learning videos and one of my favourites is Speaking Brazilian Language School. My knowledge of Portuguese is more Brazilian but it still works fine for me here. 9:25 - That's the old thermal hospital. In fact, it's so old that it was the first thermal hospital in the world, founded in 1485 by our Queen D. Leonor. Legend has it that one day, in 1484, as she was travelling from Óbidos to Batalha, she saw people bathing in a very warm, dark and smelly water. She found it strange because in those days people didn't have the habit of taking a bath and asked why they were doing that and they said those waters had healing powers. She decided to see for herself, since she had a condition (opinions vary between a skin condition, an ulcer and a simple wound) and those waters cured her, so the following year she ordered the construction of the hospital for anyone who needed treatment. The hospital opened in 1488.
    She also granted a charter to the village that in the meantime started forming around the hospital, which ended up being called Caldas (the word 'calda' comes from the Latin _callidus_ which means "hot" and it's a general term used to designate thermal spas) da Rainha (of the Queen). : )

      Oh wow. Thank you so much. This information is gold. What a wonderful story to explain how Caldas da Rainha came to be. I assumed because of the name it was something to do with hot springs but didn't know the history. It's a shame there isn't an information board in the park near the old hospital to tell this story. Or maybe there is and we missed it.

It's a nice town where you can find some interessing places and some food for small. Furthermore, you have great beaches nearby like Foz do Arelho and the beautifull village of Óbidos (5 kms south). Are you filming at 30fps? I THINK if you switch to 25 or 50 it should be compatible with the alternating current frequency thingy and help a lot with the flicker (I'm paused on the fruit salad buffet section, for context). 30 and 60 are for America. I don't know about Auz.

      We will actually be hose sitting in Caldas in June. 😊. Então, si quieres encontrar para uma cafecito, podes me ajudar com meu português. 😁 ~ Lee

    The sushi at Wok One is very nice. As is the hot station where they fry stuff for you. But the ready-made main dishes on the buffet, although they look nice, are always way too cold. Such a shame.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому

      Hello Robert. Thank you for sharing your experience as we have heard the same from other people. We didn't try many of the ready-made dishes, as I'm not much of a fan of that type of Chinese, and Lee prefers the grill station meals. I really liked the sushi though, and would definitely return. ~ Mandy

      @@FrugalTravellers If you like buffets, and want to try something more traditional, go to Lisboa XL which is just around the corner from Wok One, on the main road. It's where the Portuguese go. Buffet plus a drink (soft or wine/beer/sangria) and a coffee is something like €12. And if you like Indian, the Delhi Darbar isn't bad.

      Thank you for the great suggestions, Robert. We saw Lisboa XL and will put it on the list for the next time we're housesitting near Caldas da Rainha.
      If you've watched our recent Setúbal videos, we discovered a great buffet restaurant, one of a chain, called Mineiro. We'd definitely recommend that restaurant, as it was excellent value with delicious food. Keep it in mind if you go to Setúbal! ~ Mandy

    The biggest roadblock for me is the language. How did you learn to speak it so fluently ?

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому

      Hi, Assad. Portuguese is quite tricky but if you know some Spanish or Italian it helps. I've studied it on and off for a few years and learnt some travelling in Brazil. We'd been in Portugal for a year at this stage so I had improved. The people are quite friendly and helpful here and they appreciate you trying. 👍

    Is there a local bus service? To Obidos or the beach?

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, there is a good local bus service called Rodoviaria do Este. I'm not sure about the cost or timetable for Óbidos, but to Nazaré it was €3.80 one way or €6.50 on a day return in January 2022. ~ Mandy
