  • The Shaker Maneuver, also known as the Shaker Exercise or Head Lift Exercise, is a rehabilitation technique designed to strengthen the suprahyoid muscles, which are critical for swallowing. This exercise specifically aims to improve the opening of the upper esophageal sphincter (UES), thereby enhancing the passage of food from the pharynx to the esophagus and reducing the risk of aspiration.
To perform the Shaker Maneuver, the individual lies flat on their back without a pillow. They then raise their head to look at their toes while keeping the shoulders on the ground. This position is held for a set duration, typically one minute, followed by a rest period. This is usually repeated three times. Additionally, there are short-duration head lifts where the individual lifts their head, holds it for a second, and then lowers it, repeating this for a set number of repetitions, often 30.
The Shaker Maneuver is particularly beneficial for patients with dysphagia caused by weakened or uncoordinated muscles around the larynx and the upper esophageal sphincter. It is often included in dysphagia rehabilitation programs to improve swallowing safety and efficiency.
