    I'm 70 years old and have been a professional video producer for over half my life. I wouldn't be doing it this long if I didn't care deeply about how I do what I do and the impact I want it to have on my audience.
    I can see that you care about the quality of what you shoot and produce because your videos are excellent and in this video you are referring to the high-resolution capabilities of each of these crops, but most ends up on a phone anyway for the most part doesn't it? If I am missing something clearly obvious, please educate me.
    Even though I value my smartphone a lot, it isn't part of everything I do. I use social media sparingly because I do not want to be a Slave to this device. I use it for what I want it to do to serve me and then I put it down. I don't walk into doors and other people because I am stupidly staring down at it as I am moving through life. This is probably a funny old guy comment, but I get extremely annoyed when I see a vertical video on a TV or a computer or laptop screen. Having all that wasted real estate visually on the sides of a vertical image just pisses me off. Once again an old guy who doesn't want to watch important things on a phone if there's a larger screen elsewhere.

      This isn't about filming everything exclusively vertical though! The point being made is that there are audiences on both vertical and horizontal platforms. The feature Chris is talking about means he can continue on making the content he likes for UA-cam (on other 16:9 platforms), and with minimal effort adapt that content to vertical platforms, as opposed to putting in the labour to shoot specifically for it.
      I understand the reluctance to embrace vertical video, I am very much the same, but this video shows a way to continue to shoot landscape friendly content and embrace the other platforms with the least effort possible!

  • @ScottBalkum

    The interesting thing here is you are ignoring that aspect ratio is a style/character/emotion for anything you film. Something that is intended for 16:9 will not have the emotion in 9:16. Even if you shoot it in 4:3, it will have the emotion for 4:3 and won’t translate to 16:9 and 9:16. Its not possible to set design, act the same, move the same, etc in 16:9 and 9:16. Here is where I challenge the entire thing: Created content for UA-cam should different, completely, than content for TikTok, Stories, Reels, etc. They have different audiences with different retention, expectation, and frankly their purpose for watching. Make videos specifically for your audience on each platform. There is no one size fits all. If there was, there would be no other platforms. And believe me, I struggle with this a ton. I’d love a much larger audience and I try putting videos everywhere but in the end, I focus my video efforts for UA-cam because the audience has a longer expiration date. Anything “shorts” or anything intended to be viewed on a phone by scrolling will never retain an audience. You’re only as good as your frequency and quality of uploads. UA-cam has similar issues but a UA-cam viewer is more forgiving by the nature of how the platform works. Fastest way to get burned out is to try to accommodate every platform. 3-5X the work. All of this is just my opinion.

    It's a good strategy for cropping in post, but I think trying to be on all of the platforms all the time is a losing strategy both mentally and content-quality wise. To any aspiring creators, I say work hard at one platform and then later go for another one. Don't let the platform control you and don't feel the need to be everywhere all the time. Your family would like to see you a bit lol. Or wait for an offer from one of those new cutting companies to plaster cuts from their editors on every platform.

    Vertical Video is pointless, does it really hurt people to simply twist their phone 90 degrees to enjoy video as it has always been? Bro I figured out a little hack around this when I was figuring out how I could record car exits to make compilation videos at some point but be able to use them for shorts. I know cropping makes the res worse, but I would just start recording cars exiting from car shows horizontally with a grid/keep subject(car) in the middle vertical frame of the wide video. So then I would just simply hit post a short, hit any horizontal video and adjust the frame. I still do this to this day and I’m only using an iPhone 11 that’s it no pro camera! 🤙🏽

    • @waynosfotos
      @waynosfotos 2 роки тому +1

      The quality issue is to do with the max Mbps the app allows (which is pretty small). That is why most creators recommend to compress to 1080p and 10-20Mbps. I wouldn't be surpised if IG is 720p, 2-3 Mbps capped.

      I think this is a great tip, but from a newbie opinion you seem to be focused on quantity instead of quality. I bet if you put the time and effort on one platform format, got the time and effort back from the others, and invested that into the one platform, you get a much better “product.” There is a reason people stick with the name brands, and if your brand represents the better quality, people will follow you on whatever platform you focus on.

    this is also the major benefit of cameras that are shooting 6k and 8k. I think you are right on point. Most here dislike when a device shoots video only in a cropped mode. They want to use the full sensor width. But oddly, with the exception of a few Panasonic cameras and the new Fujifilm X-H2S, virtually all currently available mirrorless bodies crop the sensor vertically to about 1.21:1 when shooting video. I find this very annoying… not only for social media, but for reframing and for anamorphic shooting.
    I fail to understand why anyone would support being forced to shoot video in a crop of the sensor?

    1:46 You have the graphics labeled wrong. 3840 is the horizontal resolution. The larger resolution is in the direction of the longer axis (x axis, or horizontal), whether in 4:3 or 16:9. The longer horizontal direction is listed first (the 4 and 16), and the shorter vertical direction is listed 2nd (the 3 and the 9).
    So 3830x2160 is 4k resolution which means you have 3840 horizontal pixels and 2160 vertical pixels.
    And 3328x2496 means you have 3328 horizontal pixels and 2496 vertical pixels, so yes you get more vertical pixels in 4:3.

    Yeah, coming from a very different background and using cinema cameras; vertical video is the dumbest thing to emerge from social media and the social media bs. Honestly, I love widescreen because it is cinematic. Especially the 2.4:1 aspect ratio. And, if you're going to use the Anamorphic Mode on a camera you may as well use anamorphic glass and get that gorgeous widescreen picture. That's not meant to be watched vertically ever!
    Honestly, I don't even watch any of the vertical content. I don't watch TikTok. I watch films and professional television. That will remain widescreen. And when you use a professional camera like an Arri Alexa, Red, Sony, Canon, or Blackmagic Design it's meant to be shot horizontally. And, trying to handle doing post work in vertical is a massive pain the in the but when using a professional color grading monitor with professional color grading software. But then again, most things being done for social media are not meant to be so professionally produced.
    Do yourself a favor and love 1.78:1, 1.89;1 (DCI), or 2.4:1. Create cinematic images and focus on the largest screen imaginable. Not a smart phone held vertically. Most people watching vertical video have the attention spans of gerbils. It's not meant for long form content. Cinematic content is meant to be watched widescreen.

    Reminds me of back in the days when TV shows were shot in 16:9 but then cropped in 4:3 format for TV, so even on the set, the image was built and shot knowing it'll be croped to the 4:3 format. So what you're talking about is not new and i think it's acceptable.
    Now the real question is : what kind of production are you making ? If you want to shoot skirts, well, i guess you can go on 4:3 recording and then crop as many time as you want, but i think that in this case you're more making a "product" than an actual artistic proposition (and that's fine). Because when you shoot something to tell a story, you usually build/compose your image by choosing a specific aspect ratio, specific lens, you place your actors and props in the frame... It's impossible to do that when you start with the idea of making multiple crops. At least that's my opinion.

    I have never had a proper camera but I shoot in 4:3 RAW video too (from MotionCam app which basically saves the video as a series of .dng RAW photos) on my $300 phone (you get much better specs for that price in India so it is not that bad). I don't need that vertical room for 9:16 video but that extra space outside the 4k area is really helpful in stabilizing the footage in Resolve while still being a tad bit over 4K as my phone does not have OIS. Also, for some reason my laptop handle these RAW sequence much better than a standard h.264 or h.265 video so it is a win-win with immense RAW benefits. The RAW video looks so good that if I used it as a B-roll with an A-roll mirrorless camera footage, you wouldn't notice that it was not a mirrorless camera! And punching in on that RAW 4:3 footage also makes it look more like a proper MRLS Camera footage reducing the lens distortion, better field-of-view etc.

  • @HeroesReforged
    @HeroesReforged 2 роки тому

    😬 Ooof... This is a slippery slope, my friend. Aspect ratios are meant to be super intentional and not just used for the convenience of what platform you're distributing on. Look, it would be much easier if most DSLR cameras opened up their entire 1.50:1 sensor for video, instead of cropping to 16:9, to gain that verticality and better reflect the 8-perf cinema format. But, I'm a firm believer in prioritizing for your main content distribution platform and then compromising for the other, OR, just shoot separate things for separate platforms. I know it's a pain in the ass, but I don't think it's realistic for everyone to buy a Lumix camera and completely disregard the intention of the sensor and the additional ability to shoot in anamorphic just to also have TikTok content. But hey, if you can make it work, go for it.
