Well to be fair, that started out as a myth. The first telling of vampires never said anything about the sun, they just assumed it because they only attacked at night, for very odvious reasons of stealth. And even if you couldn't see the sun, there are quite a few breeds of vampires who are immune to the sun, such as nobles.
