ham to āshiq haiñ tumhāre naam ke
varna ham bhī aadmī the kaam ke

    Excellent explanation.
I would like to add something, in our area, being 'kisi ke naam ka' means you belong to that person. Iike literally, for example, if your father brings two apples, one for you and one for your brother and if you are to ask him where he has put your apple. You will say, mere naam ka apple kaha rakha hai (Where is my apple). So, the line, hum to Aashiq hai tumhare naam ke will simply mean, I am your lover (not a lover of your name). Since, I am from Delhi, I believe that this may be what Ghalib Sahab is actually trying to say.

thanks for sharing your perspective. your example makes sense. and yeah the underlying fact is that he is in love with the beloved. although there is never one aspect to Ghalib’s shayari - so in my opinion it can go both ways. He loves her and loves her name and so repeatedly writes or says it (perhaps similar to naam japna). I focused more on the name as sher says so. And typical of Ghalib - there are probably still more ways to look at it. thanks again.
