@@Thomasdgolden There's no basswood at all. It's ash body, maple neck and ebony fretboard.
But yeah, the guitar is pretty lo-tech for that price. At $5000+ I would expect some state of the art features, like multiscale/true temperament, Evertune system, piezo pickups, etc.

Met Jeff Loomis in 98 at Fenix Underground in Seattle when Nevermore played with King Diamond. That was a memorable show. Very nice person and he looks exactly the same in this video. Lucky! I still have a Nevermore shirt I love and was able to see Nevermore several times before they parted ways. Love their CDs. Jeff was playing PRS then. Fan of Jackson USA.

I'm in the UK, and I bought a Kelly back in 1985. I bought it without seeing it from Sam Ash in NYC over the telephone, as Jackson's weren't sold in the UK then. It cost me £1250 back then, which was a lot of money (I got a bank loan). I think the serial number was J0232 or thereabouts. White with black pinstriping, black floyd. Loved it. Foolishness of youth meant I traded it a few years later. What a mistake. I have always missed her.

I chopped mine in against a floral jem. I also had a yellow one at the time. What a mistake, but hindsight is perfect. The Kelly has real sentimental appeal to me. It was the first truly proper guitar I ever had. I had a Kramer Baretta at the same time, but that wasn't a patch on the Jackson. My brother was so impressed when I got the Kelly, that he rang up Sam Ash and bought a RR :)

I'm a life-long Jackson guitar fanboy. I've owned some of the best guitars they make (SL1, SL2h, HT6, HT7, and muliple dinkys). Kelly is one of the models I have never owned but always wanted (thanks to Marty). That being said, this signature model is completely unrealistically priced. I know its a USA custom shop, and there are probably only a few of them, but it doesn't make sense. Why $7k? There definitely aren't $7k of unique features here.
Jeff's signature models through Schecter were great for their price point, and I'm sure he made a good bit of money via that arrangement. I was literally ecstatic for him to come to Jackson, and I hope they continue this arrangement. I would love an Indonesian, or more budget friendly USA model, but as it stands... this model is just a pipe dream.

For example, the necks are compound and ebony... but the inlays are this gross garbage-tier acrylic, instead of MOP. MOP isn't even expensive, its just a gate-kept feature that Jackson holds back so they can add it to their USA models. The colors and finishes they uses are also off. Chlorine Burst. Desert Sky. Northern Lights. Pass... give me a jet black or a white model.

I once knew a guy named Ed who bought an ash body and maple neck for $130 from Wayne Charvel and Lynn Ellsworth. He was able to purchase the factory second body at a discount price of $50 due to a knot in the wood. The $80 neck had jumbo fret wire, and its truss rod was adjustable at the heel. He used the Fender trem from a 1958 Strat and a PAF pickup removed from a Gibson ES-335. He potted the pickup in a coffee can with paraffin wax. He then screwed the pickup to the guitar in the bridge position, slightly offset from perpendicular to the strings, to compensate for the different string spacing between the Gibson's pickup and the Fender's bridge. He had a limited knowledge of electronics. So, he removed both tone-control potentiometers, wiring the pickups in a simple circuit consisting of the pickup, an A500k potentiometer (the volume control) and a 1/4-inch output jack. He placed a knob marked "Tone" on the volume-control pot, then used a vinyl record that he'd shaped into a pick guard to cover the controls.
Here's one of the songs he played on it....

Many people says that tone was bad. I don't know how it was recorded, line? but I think it's very distinctive in the mix full of mid-range and low sounds.

Custom shop makes the price tag larger but I think something people don’t realize as well as being an artist model Jeff actually gets a percentage of the money as well so commonly people will charge more for the instrument as well. Would love to play one but yes, would not pay 7 either.

Guitar looks pretty smoking hot. Tone certainly doesn't sound bad on here either. So much negativity in these comments. It is very cool and if people want to pay the price, they are supporting Jeff, who deserves every penny he gets. The more I look at that guitar the more I think fuck yeah. That is the coolest Kelly there is.

Jeff Loomis - from what I read sometime back - auditioned (or wanted to) for Megadeth but was rejected because he was "too young" according to Dave Mustaine. I guess the a signature Kelly is one way of getting a little closer to that dream.

  • @marcomarx9269

Amazing guitar. Jeff.. you have a great taste! Jackson should ask you to remodeling jackson King V too. Since Mustaine left the brand King V was never the same. They could do the same idea you did with kelly. Please embrace King V too and do your second model. You nailed it! My dream was to have Mustaine's model. Since they don't produce it anymore I want yours now! Beautiful!
