I had the opportunity to serve in the bishopric for years. Fast and testimony meeting is supposed to have one emphasis. Your testimony of Jesus Christ. Culturally however it often drifts into reaffirming those tools that help individuals gain their testimony of Christ. Like the book of Mormon, the prophet and so on. An ideal testimony meeting would focus only on Jesus Christ.

In a fast and testimony meeting, there are no assigned speakers or special musical selections. Instead, the person conducting bears a brief testimony. He then invites members of the congregation to bear their testimonies. To bear testimony means to declare gospel truths as inspired by the Holy Ghost. Testimonies should be brief so that many people can participate. Young children are welcome to bear testimony in fast and testimony meeting. It may be best for them to learn to do so at home until they can bear testimony without help from others.-general handbook

There has always been dif levels of the priesthood power of God and the authority to act in his name and perform ordinances since Adam. Those blessing and passing the sacrament depends on how many Aaronic priesthood holders are present and available. There are times when older men that hold the Melkizedeck priesthood will bless and pass if needed, but these priesthood roles give the young men the opportunity to serve and learn priesthood roles at a young age that are appropriate for them just as in Biblical times.
Regular sacrament meetings are very structured and planned and involve more members especially when the choir sings, members will perform their musical instruments or sing solo numbers, or the primary or youth plan and present the talks and songs. The topics and assignments are chosen weeks in advance and the bishopric council's together with the president of each organization to discuss what the members need the most and truly pray and rely on God to inspire them on which topics are to be shared. The assigned topics come from general conference talks and the speaker is to pray and study the scriptures as reference in planning their remarks. The Sacrament Meeting is to be focused on our Saviors atonement and crucifixion and the covenants we made that are renewed thru the Sacrament which do include how we need to submit ourselves to Gods will and overcoming the worldly influence and natural man. Sometimes people word that in a way that makes it sound like our salvation is dependent on works, however we do strongly believe that Christ taught us to perform good works and we take that literally to mean all the ways he showed us by His example and commandments to love your neighbor, etc.
We also have Ward Conference when our Bishop will speak or give a sermon and our Stake President will also give a short sermon. Second hour will be combined as adults with a gospel discussion and the youth will also be combined to receive instruction and open discussion with topics that are relevant to them.
The meetings that have a greater music and singing presence are usually at Christmas and Easter when special arrangements or musical numbers have been prepared. We actually have a stake level Easter and Christmas "concert" performed on a few evenings that are also open to the public that go along with an Easter open house display and a Nativity Creche display. These events are wonderful and usually very professionally planned and performed because of the many talented members volunteering their time, talents, and efforts to building up the Kingdom of God on Earth and in sharing the Gospel and inviting everyone to come and see and partake of the blessings.

My wife is a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and she sings to our grands Jesus loves me, the Scriptures tell me so. Unique because of the additional Scriptures of the LDS faith of the other testaments/scriptures of Jesus. I was raised Pentacostal and was Southern Baptist children's pastor in my 20's. I studied the LDS faith for 4 years and the Spirit revealed to me that it was all true and I joined the church in 2019. It has been such a joy to experience how the Lord works in His people on all of the earth. I appreciate you and your wife's willingness to learn and grow about a different denomination of Jesus.

The Book of Mormon is true, and another witness of the same gospel of Jesus Christ as the Bible. Joseph Smith was a true prophet who worshipped Jesus Christ. The church was infiltrated by wicked men. When Joseph Smith was murdered, Brigham Young usurped control of the church and led some of the saints to SLC, Utah (many refused to follow him). Brigham Young introduced many false doctrines into that denomination including polygamy, men becoming Gods, Adam God, blood atonement of men, penal oath temple rituals, a Heavenly Mother, Lucifer being Jesus' brother, incorrect definition of Christ’s church, etc. None of that is in the Book of Mormon or teachings of Joseph Smith, but Brigham Young and the wicked leaders under and after him have pretended that it came from Joseph Smith in order to gain acceptance for their own evil and lustful desires. The LDS church of today is Brigham Young's denomination and is apostate from the teachings of the church under Joseph Smith.

@@janjones4550 That isn't true. Brigham Young literally edited the church history to pretend that Joseph Smith practiced polygamy...but Joseph fought against polygamy.
“I commenced revising the history of Joseph Smith at Brother Richard’s office: Elder Heber C. Kimball and George A. Smith were with me.” Brigham Young -History of the Church 7:389
Here is an independent court decision for further confirmation:
      TEMPLE LOT SUIT
Beyond all cavil, if human testimony is to place any matter for ever at rest, this church was one in doctrine, government, and purpose from 1830 to June, 1844, when Joseph Smith, its founder, was killed. It had the same federal head, governing bodies, and faith. During this period there was matter fundamental, or affecting its oneness. The only authorized and recognized books of doctrine and laws for the government of the church from 1830 to 1846 were the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the Book of Doctrine and Covenants. The Book of Doctrine and Covenants, which consisted principally of claimed divine revelations to Joseph Smith, was the edition published atKirtland, Ohio, in 1835, and at Nauvoo in 1845....
There can be no question of the fact that Brigham Young's assumed presidency was a bold and bald usurpation.
The Book of Doctrine and Covenants (printed in 1846) page 411, containing a revelation to Joseph Smith, January 19, 1841, gave unto them "my servant Joseph, to be a presiding elder over all my church, to be a translator, a revelator, a seer, and a prophet." ... The book clearly taught that the succession should descend lineally and go to the first-born. Joseph Smith so taught, and, before his taking off, publicly proclaimed his son Joseph, the present head of Complainant Church, his successor, and he was so anointed....
The Book of Mormon itself inveighed against the sin of polygamy.... Conformably to the Book of Mormon, the Book of Doctrine and Covenants expressly declared "that we believe that one man should have but one wife, and one woman but one husband." And this declaration of the church on this subject reappeared in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, editions of 1846 and 1856. Its first appearance as a dogma of the church (the dogma of polygamy) was in the Utah Church in 1852.
Claim is made by the Utah Church that this doctrine is predicated of a revelation made to Joseph Smith in July, 1843. No such revelation was ever made public during the life of Joseph Smith, and under the law of the church it could not become an article of faith and belief until submitted to and adopted by the church. This was never done ....
The Utah Church further departed from the principles and doctrines of the original church by changing in their teaching the first statement in the Article of Faith, which was, "We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in his Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost," and in lieu thereof taught the doctrine of "Adam-god worship." ...
It has introduced societies of a secret order, and established secret oaths and covenants, contrary to the book of teachings of the old church. It has changed the duties of the President, and of the Twelve, and established the doctrine to "Obey Counsel," and has changed the order of the "Seventy, or Evangelists." ...
A considerable number of the officers and members of the church at Nauvoo did not ally themselves with any of the factions, and wherever they were they held onto the faith, refused to follow Brigham Young to Utah, and ever repudiated the doctrine of polygamy, which was the great rock of offense on which the church split after the death of Joseph Smith.
In 1852 the scattered fragments of the church, the remnants of those who held to the fortunes of the present Joseph Smith, son of the so-called "Martyr," gathered together sufficiently for a nucleus of organization. They took the name of "The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints," and avowed their allegiance to the teachings of the ancient church; and their epitome of faith adopted, while containing differences in phraseology, in its essentials is but a reproduction of that of the church as it existed from 1830 to 1844. To-day they are twenty-five thousand strong. [At present, 1911, the membership is about sixty thousand. -- E. A. S.]
It is charged by the Respondents, as an echo of the Utah Church, that Joseph Smith, "the Martyr," secretly taught and practiced polygamy; and the Utah contingent furnishes the evidence, and two of the women, to prove this fact. It perhaps would be uncharitable to say of these women that they have borne false testimony as to their connection with Joseph Smith; but, in view of all the evidence and circumstances surrounding the alleged intercourse, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that at most they were but sports in "nest hiding."
In view of the contention of the Salt Lake party, that polygamy obtained at Nauvoo as early as 1841, it must be a little embarrassing to President Woodruff of that organization when he is confronted, as he was in the evidence in this case, with a published card in the church organ at Nauvoo in October, 1843, certifying that he knew of no other rule or system of marriage than the one published in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, and that the "secret wife system," charged against the church, was a creature of invention by one Doctor Bennett, and that they knew of no such society. That certificate was signed by the leading members of the church, including John Taylor the former President of the Utah Church. And a similar certificate was published by the Ladies' Relief Society of the same place, signed by Emma Smith, the wife of Joseph Smith, and Phoebe Woodruff, wife of the present President Woodruff.
No such marriage ever occurred under the rules of the church, and no offspring came from the imputed illicit intercourse, although Joseph Smith was in the full vigor of young manhood, and his wife Emma, was giving birth to healthy children in regular order, and was enciente at the time of Joseph's death. But if it were conceded that Joseph Smith, and Hyrum, his brother, did secretly practice concubinage, is the church to be charged with those liaisons, and the doctrine of polygamy to be predicated thereon of the church? If so, I suspect the doctrine of polygamy might be imputed to many of the Gentile churches. Certainly it was never promulgated, taught, nor recognized, as a doctrine of the church prior to the assumption of Brigham Young. -- Decision of Judge Philips in Temple Lot Case, pp. 20-26.

The people accepted the pious fraud with the maddest enthusiasm, and Brigham's power was sealed and secured for all time. Within five years after- ward he openly added polygamy to the tenets of the church by authority of a "revelation" which he pretended had been received nine years before by Joseph Smith, albeit Joseph is amply on record as denouncing polygamy to the day of his death.” Mark Twain (Roughing it, pgs. 307)

I'm a convert. I got baptized in Bolivia when I was 18 years old. My first time going to church was also on fasting testimony meeting. There was a lot of new things I heard that day and raised so many questions. Specially how people would have a relationship with Heavenly Father and see Him in every step of their lives. I learned then that the fasting is not only to keep us from eating or drinking anything, but to help us get closer to Heavenly Father. We also donate what we don't spend in those couple meals to help those in need. That's what I initially loved from this church; that all donations go to help others and to biuld the kingdom of God here on earth, and not in the pocket of a leader. I've seen and helped with the bishop's wearhouse where food is being given to so many families that needed the most. Those donations come from the church members when they fast in the name of Jesus Christ. That makes it sacred money.

@@johns1834 I grew up in a Catholic school, but my mom didn't let me baptize Catholic because she wanted me to choose like Jesus did. Later on, I needed to enroll in college in Bolivia and in order to skip an ethics class, I needed to prove I was baptized as Catholic. The process was different from being baptized as a baby, so I had to take some classes with the nuns. I had questions such as if God wanted us to be like Him, He should have been like us once; and if we are children of God, we should be able to be co-creators, at least, as our Father in Heaven is creator of everything. After all, we are made on His image. They were very frustrated with me and couldn't answer my questions. Anyways I got baptized for the credit. However, I still had those questions until I met the elders. There's more to my Catholic upbringing, but I don't want to bore you. Thanks for asking 😊

My understanding is that “living water” is the Holy Spirit. Jesus referred to living water when He spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4:10-14. He said that whoever drinks of the water He gives will never thirst again. for it will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
This living water represents the life-giving and satisfying presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. It is not something that can be obtained through external rituals or actions, but rather through faith in Jesus Christ. As believers, we have this living water flowing within us, providing us with spiritual refreshment, nourishment, and satisfaction.

I was raised Methodist and became converted to the restored Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while in college in 1963. Thank you and Joy for so respectfully and genuinely sharing your reflections after visiting your first LDS Fast & Testimony meeting. When you pointed out the shift you heard from focus on Jesus Christ to testimonies of "the Church is true, Joseph Smith is true, the Book of Mormon is true, the temple is true, etc." (the points of difference), I saw a mistake I was making, and perhaps along with other fellow saints, by not realizing what I mean when saying those things are true. I had to ask myself "What do I mean when I say that or hear that?".
What I mean by saying "the church is true" is it's true that Jesus organized and established a church in New Testament times, like Ephesian 2:20, and also inaugurated it's restitution in these latter-days as foretold in Acts 3:21. I would say it's true that Jesus built His church upon the foundation of apostles and prophets with Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone both times,. It's true because Jesus is the head of the Church and leads it today. And I could add many other acts of Jesus regarding His church.
It would be the same for the phrase "Joseph Smith is true", because Jesus and God the Father came to Joseph in vision, and Jesus revealed His will to Joseph many, many times to instruct and guide him in restoring His church as a true prophet, like Amos 3:7.
What I mean by "The Book of Mormon is true" is I believe Jesus gave us the Book of Mormon scriptures. I believe Jesus fore-planned the Book of Mormon for our day to strengthen faith in Him and in the Bible to bring us salvation. and to clarify doctrine and reduce contention among other things. I believe Jesus speaks to us through the preserved scripture writings of the Book of Mormon of the Americas, just like the Bible preserves the writings of Judah. I believe Jesus gifted Joseph Smith with the ability to translate the ancient languages etched on the metal plates. I believe the words of the Book of Mormon come from Jesus for our salvation. I believe Jesus came to the Americas and visited one of the lost broken-off branches of the House of Israel (He visited others) for their salvation. I believe Jesus remembers all of his scattered sheep and is the good shepherd of the whole world from the beginning of mankind. I believe the truth of all this by the power of the Holy Ghost witnessing to me.
I won't continue here with the other phrases mentioned, but you get the idea. Jesus is in, and through, and above, and below, and before, and behind everything we believe. Discussions about how He more personally saves, changes our hearts, and directs our lives would hopefully be found in our homes and in our Relief Society, Priesthood, Young Men, Young Women, and Primary classes, and in the temple.
As a Church we are being asked by our Prophet to improve by remembering and using the correct name of our Church -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- and to better rivet our focus on our Savior in our homes and in all our meetings where we teach, speak, and strive to serve and minister as Christ did. Your reflections on your visit to a Fast & Testimony meeting and noticing a shift away from a focus on Jesus has awakened me to see where I need to improve by acknowledging Jesus foremost in whatever I've been leaving unseen or unsaid!! Thank you for your wake-up call!

Regarding the sacrament service. Deacons are young men who are turning 12 this year and they are often the ones who pass the sacrament.
Teachers are young men who are turning 14 this year and they prepare the sacrament. They fill the water cups, and place the bread on the trays, and put the trays on the table
Priests are young men who are turning 16 and they break the bread and bless the sacrament. One of the things I have always loved about the sacrament prayer is that it is the same prayer the Nephites said. In the book of Moroni at the end of the book, Moroni is writing down a few things he thinks are important to be included, and writes down the sacrament prayer.

And I would add that it is not unusual for Melchizedek Priesthood holders to be called upon to bless and pass the Sacrament on occasion. There are many reasons for this, but one important reason is that convert boys/men who are older than the "normal" age for receiving the Aaronic Priesthood, are ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood soon after baptism so they can start serving in priesthood duties right away. I think they have to wait a year to receive the Melchizedek Priesthood if they are old enough (18), but don't quote me on that.

Yes, I thought how with the “come follow me” curriculum we use to study both the Bible and Book of Mormon, we are encouraged to be feasting daily on Gods word, individually and with our family. The feasting, or studying, and teaching our children and then applying -to become more like Jesus to be more in tune with the Holy Ghost/Spirit- we do at home rather than just at church on Sunday… I’m sure other followers of Christ do this too, but just that shift of church should be a support not, the only source of spiritual feasting… outside of the partaking of the sacrament. And then in our classes after we discuss what it is we have been studying at home and feast with the members of our wards.

The true church is all about proclaiming what Christ has DONE to make us right with God now for all eternity. It’s a certainty.
Jesus Christ canceled the record of debt that was held against us. All you need to do is accept Christ by faith. It isn't because of who you are and what you must and can do for God. It is because of who God is and what He did for you in sending Jesus to be the sacrificial offering for your sins. To be your substitute on the cross and to satisfy the demands of God's law that stands against you.
Christ has done the one work that was necessary to reconcile you to God. Christ has done the one act of righteousness that could bring justification and life to all men. All Christ is asking with open arms is for you to lay down your religiosity and works at the foot of the cross and allow Christ to take it.
      Salvation is quite simple.
Luke 18 And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt:
10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
11 The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
12 I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’
13 But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’
14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Pastor Jeff and family moving to Utah is not for the h*ll of it and as an occasional watcher I have heard pastor say very clearly that he doesn’t agree with this religion but yet he moved his family to the heart of your church’s area. So I can’t help but wonder the underlying agenda of this pastor, his channel get views that make him money and he now goes around your state creating video content to make more. Watching this from the outside I would say pay attention to this pastor because there is more than is being said.
On a personal note I have found the “Mormons” to be kind and respectful people. I have personally seen property values go up in areas near their temples and churches so it’s a lot safer to bring his family to your state than many other states in America. I say believe people when they say they don’t agree with your religion.

I find that a wonderful thing because as we raise our hand, we are letting that individual brother or sister know (and the Lord know) that we are there for them to help them, pray for them and will support them as they serve in their calling. Also, it generally is a regular ward member that offers the invocation/benediction rather than the Bishop or his counselors. I hope this clarified a bit for you. Glad you both could attend. Hello Brother Jeff and Sister Joy.
I've been watching your videos for some time now and they are fun. I think several people commented on some of the things I was going to say, but I wanted to talk about "Sunday" dress. I am 68 and have attended many different churches/religions. I guess I'll put it that way. One of the things I try to do in my life is make Sunday different from ALL of the other days of the week. I work, and it is work, to keep it holy. I don't shop on Sunday, don't go out to eat, don't listen to the radio in the car, at least not the normal music I play during the week. During the week I wear "regular" clothes. Now, with that said, I know God and Christ will accept me no matter what I wear to Church. They love me not matter what. I live in Vegas and people show up to Church in all kinds of clothing. The BYU Basketball team came to our ward in their basketball clothes. NOT their court uniforms, but their jackets and pants, etc. It's okay. I wear a dress/skirt and top on Sunday, as I've done my whole life. That's what I was taught. But not so God and Christ will accept me, but because I want to show that I am willing to be different on Sunday. I want to show I care about them to wear something more than I would wear every day. I hope I'm explaining this correctly and making sense. Sunday is a special day. It is the Lords day. By wearing something special, I act differently. When kids are in play clothes, they think it is time to play. But when a four year boy old wears a suit, he knows that is not play clothes and acts differently. When little girls dress in a nice dress, they act accordingly. So when I dress in a nice dress, my attitude reflects it.
I would be interested in knowing if you children have gone to primary?

The speakers in Sacrament meeting spend lots of time (more than a week) preparing their talks. My husband & I were actually the speakers today in our Ward here in Fresno, California. We were asked back in December if we would be the speakers today (February 11th). A member of the Bishopric gave us our topic for our talks. And we had more than a month to prepare. This preparation time allows us time to be prayerful about our message. It allows us time to get into the scriptures to look up scripture references to support our topic. We look up talks & quotes from General Authorities who have given messages on similar topics. We also use personal experiences in our talks to support the topic. Most people usually end their talks by bearing personal testimonies. These talks are inspiring and uplifting, and are also meant to invite the spirit into our meetings. Sunday School and Primary are where we go to be taught the scriptures. This year we are studying The Book of Mormon. Last year was the New Testament. It changes every year. Our talks would be equivalent to your Pastor Presentation. Ours are just done by members of the Church under the direction of the Bishopric.

We get into the habit, I think, of feeling, or thinking that his great suffering was being nailed to the cross and left to hang there. Well, that was a period in the world’s history when thousands of men suffered that way. So his suffering, so far as that is concerned, was not any more than the suffering of other men who have been so crucified. What, then, was his great suffering? I wish we could impress this fact upon the minds of every member of this Church: His great suffering occurred before he ever went to the cross. It was in the Garden of Gethsemane, so the scriptures tell us, that blood oozed from every pore of his body; and in the extreme agony of his soul, he cried to his Father. It was not the nails driven into his hands and feet."

In the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the atonement was not just the savior being able to cleanses us of sins. But also that when Jesus went into the Garden of Gethsemane, he experienced every ounce of every sin, affliction, and sickness and hardship in life. For example, when someone has a divorce, Jesus experienced what that divorce was like for that person. When someone has a headache, the savior knows how that feels;. Every physical, spiritual and emotional and mental infirmity we experience, he experienced in the garden. All of that was also experienced when he died on the cross as well because he needed to experience all of that to the max and worst possible condition he could experience it as well which is where the cross comes in. In order for him to experience all our infirmities and struggles to the max, he had to do it on the cross. So along with him paying the spiritual debt for each of our sins, allowing us the opportunity for repentance, Jesus also experienced every infirmity and struggle we experience in our lives, that he may know according the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities. The person so voting is interviewed by the leadership and either reconciled or the calling is withdrawn. This is at the ward level. At higher levels it would be the stake president. In theory it would be for some unworthiness. One I witnessed was because a sister was afraid she would loose someone she depended on to a higher calling. After she was assured, the vote was retaken. Kind of reminds you of Christ's teaching: if you are not one, you are not mine.

      Jeff,
The following references come from canonized scripture of the LDS church, from the Doctrine & Covenants, references provided from the official LDS church app & website regarding the topic of sustaining VOTES, which either affirms or disapproves of someone for a calling by the COMMON CONSENT of their church members.
Except, in spite of what these passages say, I see by the comments, not all Latter-day Saints agree that it’s a “vote.” Though that’s part of what it is according to their scriptures. Also, for some reason the rules of sustaining their “apostles” and “prophets” do not follow the “law of common consent.” Those callings and many of the sustaining votes of LDS general authorities also are retroactive sustaining votes at general conferences or sometimes stake conferences AFTER that person who is called has already received the ordinance of being “set apart” and has already been serving in some capacity as well.
      - - -
“No person is to be ordained … without the vote of that church,” - D&C 20:65.
“all things shall be done by common consent,” - D&C 26:2 (also D&C 28: 13).
“fill all these offices and approve of those names which I have mentioned, or else disapprove of them at my general conference;” - D&C 124:144.

You went to a ward with younger families and probably a newly developed community. When I moved to my ward there were no priests that were youth. The elders quorum performed the ordinance. We probably had a couple of deacons. And four nurseries. Now we have a good supply of Aaronic priesthood with some rotation. And three children in one nursery.
Bearing testimonies is sacred. There are things we learn or experience, but should be careful to not represent ourselves and our accomplishments, and to focus on gratitude and something we learned. The last thing you want to create is a sense of competition or even others feeling like they aren’t doing well because they aren’t having similar experiences. Small children bearing testimonies is adorable and serves a purpose of them gaining experience and confidence. And I feel that God is pleased with their growth. We all smile as well and remember watching our own children growing.
And don’t forget everyone is hungry, but not hangry! 🥰

If you look at the sacrament table where the priests bless the sacrament and the deacons get the trays to pass the bread and water you will see that it is covered with white fabric representing the covering of Christ when His body was in the tomb and when you listen to the prayer for the bread we take it "in remembrance of His body" and witness unto God, the Eternal Father, that we are willing to take upon us the name of His Son, and always remember Him and keep his commandments that we may always have his Spirit to be with them. If you look at it then you will see that it really does look like a his covered body. Not in a macabre sort of way but in a reverent worshipful way.

I picked up a "Mormonism for Dummies" book once just for fun. One of the passages I always remember from that book is the section about Fast and Testimony meetings, and how that if new people attend one and hear strange things, you just have to remember that the people have been fasting and haven't had breakfast yet, so they come off a bit loopy. :)
For the sustaining, while it is partly a "yeah, we agree", it is mostly that when we raise our hands, it is a expression of commitment to support that person in that calling. If a primary teacher, for instance, and if they ever need a sub or someone to help them out in some other way, we are committing to helping them out. Or, if it is a leader, we are committing to support and follow that leader.
The quiet during the sacrament is just a moment for those of us without kids to remember and think about the savior, his sacrifice for us, our gratitude for him, and to feel sorrow for our sins that we haven't repented of yet. It supposed to be quiet contemplation. If you have kids, you are lucky to keep them quiet and survive. :) I am grateful that the Lord appreciates our efforts even if we may not always succeed. :)

We are spiritually fed with teaching each week too lol. Instead of one man, the same man, who gets paid to study all week to deliver a message, we have 2 or 3 members of the congregation voluntarily study for a week or two to deliver spiritual messages each Sunday during the main service, not to mention the teachers who prepare lessons and teach classes each Sunday. Not to mention our own feasting during our personal daily scripture study. And the 30+ General Conference talks that are very thoughtfully studied and prepared for months by the general church leadership that we are fed with every six months; that makes 60+ additional “sermons” for the whole year, which is more than one amazing sermon per week we can revisit to be fed and apply to our life on top of what is taught on Sundays.

So just out of curiosity, how much time have you spend attending a protestant Evangelical church? From the comments you have made, it would seem that you might not be familiar with most christian churches.
...you commented, "Instead of one man, the same man, who gets paid to study all week to deliver a message" This comment really comes across as condescending.
1st, most churches have more than one pastor. There is usually an assistant pastor, and often there will be visiting pastors from other churches or congregations. So you don't listen to the "same man" every Sunday throughout the year.
2nd, pastors due a lot more than just prepare a sermon. They council with members when they are going through difficult times. They perform weddings and/or funerals, they lead Bible studies during the week, etc. They spend a considerable amount of time with the congregation.
3rd, pastors have spend the time to learn Greek, Hebrew and church history which give them excellent insight into the context of the scriptures. They've poured over the Bible and have studied it, verse by verse for several years. Most are educated to a Master Degree or PHD degree level. If you've ever had an opportunity to listen to a pastor teach from the Bible it's an amazing experience, NOT like the TV evangelists most people are familiar with. Almost 99% of these sermons are online or youtube so you can go back and listen to them again anytime. Check out Alistair Begg at www.truthforlife.org
Even though the Apostle Paul did not take an income from the work he was doing in the ministry, he definitely made it clear that those who are proclaiming/preaching have a right to receive an income.
1Corinthians 9:14 "In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel."(ESV) Most pastors make a very modest income. How do I know this? because they posts it during their annual budge meeting so everyone can see it. We see where ALL the money goes, how much the pastor gets, how much is put into other ministries, etc. No Ensign Peak Investor, just a simple budget that everyone can see.
Finally, I think and LDS church service can be uplifting and can provide spiritual food for those who are LDS. I just think it's important to recognize those outside of the LDS faith are often times genuine in their efforts.

If you Google the talk by our prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, "Let God Prevail," you will find we have similar beliefs to that. We as individual members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sometimes find difficulty in balancing the "Be ye doers of the word, not just hearers only," or "Faith without works is dead" -type scriptures with the fact that there is no way we can do enough to save ourselves, and we desperately and simply need to give in to our Savior and His grace, and give our lives to Him. I think this is a critical difference in our beliefs. Alma 34 says this:
32 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.
33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.
34 Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.
35 For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.
To me, it appears that in the evangelical belief there is no need for repentance. The onus is on Jesus to "save us from our sins" without us needing to do anything *except* believe. But we believe that faith in Jesus Christ is unto repentance. Repentance is our duty, our responsibility. Repentance is not something Jesus does for us, but rather the atonement is something He did for us that makes it possible for us to repent. And then he commanded us to do just that, repent. That is our work and our responsibility. And we are commanded by the Lord to "repent, and be baptized for a remission of your sins." If we are not baptized, then our sins are not remitted. This is one of the gifts of the atonement of Jesus Christ. He is the giver of the gift. We can choose to be a receiver of that gift, or not. We can choose to rejoice in Him as the giver of the gift, or, we can reject His gift by not believing in Him, by not having faith in Him unto repentance, by not keeping his commandment to be baptized by water and by the spirit.
To me, it seems the evangelical belief is that something happens after we die whereby at that time we are changed and we no longer desire to sin. Something changes within us, because Christ makes the change "for us", eliminating our need to do anything. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe that we do not need to wait for death for that change to be made "for us" (without sacrifice or effort on our part as beings who can exercise our personal agency) but instead we believe that through the atonement of Jesus Christ we can accomplish that goal during this life, depending on our effort, our faith, our sacrifice, our willingness to receive of Jesus Christs grace by keeping his commandments and repenting daily. Line upon line, precept upon precept. Here a little, there a little. This is not to say that we can earn our salvation on our own. That is impossible. But we don't have to wait until death to take advantage of Jesus's atonement. We should receive his gift now! Every day we should rejoice in Him. We should repent daily. We should seek to keep his commandments better each day. This is the gift we can give Him, to believe Him, to obey Him, to follow Him, to be like Him. One example of this teaching in the Book of Mormon is Ether 3 : 13. The Brother of Jared is redeemed from the fall during his mortality. And in the Bible: 1 John 3:2-3.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
What does it mean when it says every man that hath this hope in him "purifieth himself", even as he is pure?
This teaching is confirmed in both the Bible and the Book of Mormon. The evangelical idea that Christ will just change us without our own effort/work, to me, does not seem biblical. And to me, seems incorrect. It does not make sense. It does not seem true.

Enjoyed the contrasts with your own beliefs on this episode. As an extension of your Fast and Testimony meeting experience, get one of your contacts to take you to a local Bishop's Storehouse. This is one of the places where the monthly fast "offerings" go (the financial donation given to the church from the money saved from fasting several meals). These are establishments with a specific welfare purpose. As you are in Utah and given your large following, you might also score a visit to Welfare Square in Salt Lake City. Many of the Church fast offerings go to world-wide humanitarian service (over a billion dollars last year). And the fast offering benefits are not only for Church member use. Before hurricane Katrina even hit several years ago, the Church had 84 semi-trucks with food and water heading from Salt Lake City to the Gulf coast. Four of the semi trucks contained gasoline. FEMA and residents in need were grateful for the immediate support when government entities struggled. A huge warehouse is now being built on the east coast to facilitate further service.

@@Cocoon68do you know how much the church gives? How much would be a satisfactory amount for them to give? Are we speaking monetarily or are we talking about all forms of humanitarian aid? What would satisfy your claims that the church should give “much more”?
As far as just physical money, the church seems to give about a billion yearly from what reports state. Then you have actual man hours which equates to more than 6 million hours per year. You have humanitarian projects by the church which equates to more than three and a half THOUSAND yearly. Then you have other projects such as relief funds for natural disasters, you have money the church spends on both proselyting and service missionaries. You have bishop store houses, the perpetual education fund, and other such sources that are sent to a single purpose (fast offerings only go to food in the storehouse to give to the poor, perpetual education fund only goes to paying for schooling for those who don’t have conditions, etc.)
As for other expenditures? The church spends millions of not billions yearly building temples, chapels, printing hymnals, bibles and other scriptures.
And then there’s the fact that the church practically loses money supporting the countries where it isn’t as wide spread, or impoverished countries with many members. The amount of money the church needs to sustain itself is astounding.
Really, that’s just scratching the surface on the way the church spends money to help people.
Why do they save so much? Why do they have up to 200 billion (depending on the report you read) saved at all times? Because the church believes in saving in preparation for difficult times ahead. And there will be very difficult times ahead. Just like they advise their members to save money and stock up on food, water and other necessities in case of emergencies, they do the same. We’re in for some rough times and the church needs money to be able to take care of its members and those in need. I don’t see any issue with having a large amount of savings, especially as a global entity with tens of millions of people under your responsibility.
I would like to hear your thoughts though. HOW much more does the church need to give? “Much more” isn’t very descriptive or quantifiable

In your list of ways the church helps people, you forgot to mention the organizations the church partners with. Or gives funds to. The church can't get into everywhere, so it partners up. Basically funding them to do more work. For instance the red cross. Church gives them so much to do the work under the name of the red cross, but church funded. Plus the donations of time members give in callings or other services to the community individually. There's far too much to ever count...
What I don't think the church gives much into is the mental health of the American people. I think we have a crisis here, and no one has even attempted to find a solution. I would want tithing, offerings to go to saving more lives. I've had 3 kids just from my house go to an institute for help at different times during the last 5 years. My sister works at a facility. There's nothing really well developed to help people who struggle. You would think the church could get on that, like they did the humanitarian effort. Just as important I think.
I do know about LDS services with a bishop recommendation. But no one who is suicidal is going to start there. It's not enough for the pandemic we have. Anyone needs to be able to get help easily and fast.

@@slowe299I disagree... Though I would suggest that they had better know what they're talking about. The best example has been the discussions between Greg and Jeff. I do not believe that Jeff would be anything but respectful to the missionaries that would meet with him in this hypothetical situation. I will say that it wouldn't be the best setting for either the missionaries or Jeff to do the discussions. If Jeff wanted to do so, it should be completely away from the channel. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I respect Jeff totally for what he's doing and for how he's doing it. I trust what he's saying because he's saying things from his perspective. The issue wouldn't be the discussions, it would be in the nature of the how receptive either side would be. Evidences are only as good as they are accepted. Based on the earlier discussed reading of the Book of Mormon, the believe structure is reinforced by prayer, which Jeff is not willing to do, based on his lack of belief in the book itself. So, the discussion is valueless for that reason. Without a reason to stretch, there must be full evidence, which is outside of faith itself. So, again, based on the basics of this channels birth, it's to open dialog between different belief structures in a more productive way. And, if someone changes their views during it, one way or the other, great but isn't the goal at this time. I have gone way passed my intended information in this reply but feel it should stand as it is. In closing I will add just a little more. To be able to discuss the heavier topics, (religion, politics, and I'd even include such things as diets), you have to allow those on the other side to be wrong. What I mean by that, if you're point is "correct" in your thoughts then anything outside if it must be incorrect. So, if Jeff is correct then anyone on the other side is ultimately incorrect and vice versa. If, however, both sides are legitimately seeking truth then they must be able to accept that they may be incorrect. At this point, that is not the intent of this journey. It is to open a dialog plain and simple. I applaud Jeff and likely his entire family for having the wherewithal to do this, hold to his beliefs and make legitimate friends with a different view point. If Mormonism is true, hopefully things will change for Jeff and his family. But until the time comes for Jeff to investigate, allowing for thr potential of it to be true, he's incredible in discovering the beliefs of others. And, no... MY intent did not include most of what I've written to be directed at you. Forgive me for my oversharing and let the truth search contain for we all. The bishop or bishopric member that is directing the meeting usually starts each testimony meeting each month with his own testimony to get it going. So when the bishop was talking at the beginning of the testimony meeting, thats usually a way for the bishop or bishopric member to get the testimony session of sacrament going. The church also does teach that confession is a part of repentance and if the sin is serious enough will require a confession to your bishop. Certain steps are then taken for a person to repent and the bishop to help in that regard. It is just done more confidentially and not made public. And a if you don't know, a bishopric member is a counselor to the bishop that helps with extra tasks the bishop needs done. So there's the bishop, a first counselor and a second counselor to him. And that is called a bishopric.

I am glad to see that you are both having fun together in this endeavor. You are both adorable. I appreciate how you compare and contrast the LDS religion with your Evangelical background without putting anyone down. Such a refreshing approach. There are plenty of cultural things that weave into testimony meetings. We just can't seem to keep ourselves from talking about all our experiences and how the Lord or Spirit plays a part. The 'real' purpose is to testify of Jesus Christ and His role in our lives. I would never want to make anyone feel bad for going a bit off track of that (I've done that myself more times than not), however, a simple testimony of Christ can bring in that feeling of peace and love so quickly. Spirit talking to Spirit testifying that Christ is our Lord and Savior. Our Redeemer who has done EVERYTHING for us and His grace is sufficient. Thanks for your comments and content.

Around 2:40, you mentioned testimony meeting in your churches as at different times than Sunday morning. Our fast and testimony meeting were on Thursday night in the days of Joseph Smith till 1896 when Wolford Woodruff moved it to Sunday to make it easier for people who had to work on Thursdays.
The use of water over wine became predominantly practiced during the prohibition period.
The doctrine regarding what is eaten and drank is found in Doctrine and Covenants Section 27. Verse 2 in that section specifically states:
"2 For, behold, I say unto you, that it mattereth not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an eye single to my glory-remembering unto the Father my body which was laid down for you, and my blood which was shed for the remission of your sins."
On my mission we used a grape flavored Kool aid like drink because we didn't have access to anything else safe to drink. The water was contaminated in that area and the store ran out of purified water.

28:26 I love you McCulloughs. I continue to be impressed by your respect and sincerity in your efforts to understand. ESPECIALLY when you disagree. It’s really admirable and inspiring. I enjoy learning about your beliefs and the differences you see, because I honestly don’t know much about other religions. I’ve been raised in the Church by many generations of Latter-day Saints on every side of my family. I’ve also lived in Utah most of my life (born here, only lived outside the state when I served a mission), and most of my friends and associates my whole life have been members of the Church or at least were very familiar with our beliefs and didn’t bring up religion.
I would say that I do feel spiritually fed at church, including at fast and testimony meeting, but some meetings, talks or testimony are more inspiring than others. When I first started watching this, I was concerned about what your experience was. I think (maybe especially in Utah) we kind of get complacent and take our faith for granted and how AMAZING it really is. So we’re very susceptible to going through the motions. Or not really having anything “new” to say. Or not feeling particularly inspired.
When I was young (older Primary or in Young Women), church leaders emphasized what testimonies should be. They’re not a time to just get up and discuss any random thing. Specifically, I remember them saying it isn’t to be a “travel log” or just some account of recent events in our lives. They did emphasize that our testimonies should be centered around Christ, His restored gospel/the restoration, or the scriptures. But absolutely, temples and prophets are a BIG part of the restoration that I’m personally so very grateful for and are generally a prominent theme of any fast and testimony meeting. The gift of the Holy Ghost is something I also treasure, and the times He’s noticeably influenced my life are also experiences I’m incredibly grateful for and cherish.
I appreciate that Joy pointed out that maybe Sunday school classes are more of the meet and greet time. Sacrament meeting is supposed to be the most reverent and formal of our meetings. We’re discouraged from visiting in the chapel out of reverence for the sacredness of the sacrament ordinance.
Greeting and visiting does sometimes happen before and after the meeting in the chapel, but there have even been times when I’ve heard leaders (maybe just locally but I think generally as well) discourage us from doing that and ask us to take it into the foyers and halls. There’s much more greeting/visiting in the classes and weekly activities.
Classes are also more instructional, and each class has a dedicated teacher, though talks in sacrament meeting are often very instructive and inspiring to me as well. But yeah, we don’t have one pastor who prepares all week or is formally trained or has been through a rigorous doctrinal education. Because we’re including all people of all levels of spirituality and doctrinal understanding and teaching ability in our local leadership and teaching positions, sometimes lessons aren’t always particularly inspiring either. Or as Pastor Jeff pointed out, maybe they weren’t feeling particularly inspired by the curriculum that week. So I can see and appreciate that difference.
We’re big on teaching approved doctrine and wary of letting people go too “off script”. Sometimes even members of the church hold beliefs that are either flat-out contrary to doctrine or at least are speculative. The church VERY much discourages teachers or anyone presenting in a church meeting from entering those speculative realms. So therefore, a curriculum is helpful to keep meetings doctrinal. Also, it helps ensure that every member of the church around the world IS receiving a balanced gospel study, so that we all can have a deep understanding of what the scriptures say and what the doctrine is.
Anyway, I do think people like yourselves who are VERY converted to Christ and have chosen not just to go to church each Sunday but actively participate in ministry are more inspiring. We have people like that in every ward, and we also have people who attend because of social pressure but not personal conviction, and people who believe but are complacent and kinda just going through the motions. I find myself fitting into that last category often and am inspired by the two of you and your excitement about your beliefs and your continued efforts to strengthen your relationships with Christ.
General conference or any talk by a general authority ALWAYS gives me that feeling of being spiritually fed and inspired. People who listen to the Spirit when they prepare and teach with the Spirit and live so close to the Spirit are always able to reach me, even when I’m not particularly interested in the topic they’re discussing. I feel the Spirit when they speak, and the Spirit speaks to me while they speak, even if it’s not on the topic of what’s being said. Ideally, every sacrament talk, testimony, and Sunday school lesson would do that, but sometimes it doesn’t. 😬 I also feel that kind of spiritual nourishment and renewal in the temple. It’s why I love going there so much.
Sorry for the long (and many) comments on this video, but I really enjoyed it and had things to say I guess! 😂

That's a wonderful question about sustaining!! Generally speaking, yes, we trust that the Bishopric have been under the inspiration/ received revelation about the people called to their callings. However, there are times when the bishopric may not be aware of something going on in a person's life that another member is aware of. This would be such a time to raise your have and have a private conversation with the bishop about your concerns. It may be that this person has a personal grudge against the person, and they will be counselled according to the teachings of Christ (reconciliation etc). It's rare (I've never personally witnessed when someone has raised their hand against). But I'm grateful it is there for the reasons it is because bishops don't know everything. The Lord can use other members to help the Bishop is necessary. We all have a say but we do generally trust in the bishop's judgement in his calling 😊

We do prayers for people who are needing special prayers and we submit them to the temple and they are put on a prayer role and are prayed for during the temple. The name stays on the role for 2 weeks. When you fast, you have specific things you fast and pray for whether it be for someone you know who needs something specific or something you personally are struggling with, or for instance rain during a drought. Sometimes as a ward we will group fast and pray fir someone in particular. We frequently call on friends and family to pray for us during times we need support. We often hold personal or family fasts for special needs like before surgery. We can also receive a blessing from a holder of the Melchizedek priesthood during times of trouble. Or receive administration when sick.

When you mentioned that you benefit so much from your preparation to speak in your congregation, that is how all of us feel as we prepare to speak in our sacrament meetings when we are asked to do so! Think of that, each one of us gets the opportunity to prepare & share our feelings about different aspects of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! It makes us all nervous to get up in front of everyone, but it is so beneficial for each of us, and everyone has a different way of sharing and that is also a blessing. I take notes on what the speakers share each week, and I also take notes on what The Holy Ghost teaches me during the talks and lessons at church (an individualized lesson from The Holy Spirit each Sunday, if I am ready to receive it). Enjoy Utah, my Mom, 3 sisters, & 2 of my children live there. We live here in California, where the congregations are a little smaller lately (there was a time when we had 2 classes for each of our children's age groups, but not so much anymore), so when the Priesthood passes the sacrament, there are a range of ages from young 11/12 year old deacons all the way to 70 year olds. Children's needs are different from those of adults. After visiting different churches, I think the Protestant practice of meeting the needs of the children by having a separate children's service is a better option. Young parents need an hour where they can fellowship with other adults and know their children are learning fun songs and making friends in their own age group. Just giving young parents 1 hour to worship without distraction is a real blessing to them.
And a separate Children's Service that meets the needs of children, who just can't sit still and quiet for the length of an adult service, is better for the children. Kids would grow up enjoying going to church more. Right now, it's just an endurance test for everyone, and totally unnecessary.

    • @KidsandKittens217
      @KidsandKittens217 4 місяці тому +1

I don't think you were foolish. Have you ever tried to keep your several young children quiet all through Sacrament Meeting? Children's needs are different from those of adults. Children's needs should be cared for and should be met. We should love our children enough to meet their needs. It's *wrong to create expectations they are incapable of* meeting. Right now we try to fit their wiggly little shapes like pegs into a "square hole." We, their parents, are made to be "the bad guy" -- the disciplinarian -- all through Sacrament Meeting. Children learn that a "good child" sits quietly, which they are incapable of doing (which makes them feel "bad" and that they aren't good enough). And children develop a loathing toward going to church.
It is better for the children to grow up enjoying their time at church rather than constantly having their parents have to stifle their natural personalities all throughout an hour. Right now, it's just an hour of endurance for the entire family.
We should love our children enough to let them be children, rather than trying to force them into an adult mold.
My dream is that the Church will care enough for the children to create a separate Children's Service where the kids can stretch, reach for the sky, then touch their toes to the rhythm of the songs, get in a circle and sing and dance. Meet friends and do activities. Where they can expand their personalities and interact with friends their own age and make new friends. Our kids need to be better socialized to care about other kids their own age. And to do this they need an entire service devoted to their own needs, where they can be friendly and talkative like little kids naturally want to be.
Right now we are not meeting their needs. And the church buildings do not meet their needs. We need to love our children enough to change this.

While the majority of women often wear dresses, there is likely 2-3 who do not. My wife chooses to wear slacks because of some of her medical conditions.
As for objections, you might be surprised how often they happen. It is far more likely that people who object choose to contact the Executive Secretary in private rather than razing hand in public. Both methods are equally valid, but until one is called as a member of the bishopric or as Executive Secretary (which is a very difficult calling that is often under appreciate) the general congregation often rarely knows how many people are objection.
Policy is that that, depending on the calling in question, every objection results in an interview with either the Ward's Bishop or Stake President. Sometimes objections result in a phone interview from a General Authority. They are taken very seriously.

Maybe someone else has brought this up, but the main purpose and focus of Sacrament Meeting is to partake of the Sacrament--the emblems of Christ's suffering and sacrifice for us. Testimonies and, during other Sundays, talks are secondary to that. That said, I nearly always feel "fed" by the thoughts and experiences of my fellow Saints following the Sacrament service. Particularly when accompanied by the Spirit confirming the truth of the teachings. The second hour meetings also meet that need. I try to prepare myself for Sunday meetings and engage with those speaking, praying, or singing--it nearly always results in my faith in Christ being strengthened. I believe I'm fairly typical in that.
Glad you were able to attend and experience the service with your wife. I don't normally watch your videos but did find it interesting that there were a number of subjects you didn't seem conversant with. Older people do at times bless the sacrament. Sometimes it is a Father-son occasion, at other times it is a recent convert given the opportunity. And of course there is home church when the weather or illness prevents church attendance that sacrament is administered at home.

Pastor Jeff: As always, I enjoyed listening to your (and Joy's) observations of our (sometimes perplexing) faith and culture. As a few others have commented, I was always a little nervous when I was a missionary and we had non-members attend a Fast & Testimony meeting, because you never knew what you were going to get. Some wards we have lived in have one or more members who regularly give some pretty eccentric "testimonies." I really love the ward we currently live in. It seems that the vast majority of testimonies each month focus on Jesus Christ and His Gospel, which is what we should be testifying about. I love to see/hear a young child or youth get up and testify about the power of prayer or the strength that they find in reading the scriptures. Other wards we have lived in, many testimonies seemed to be almost repeated word-for-word, without any real sincerity or feeling. It varies a lot from ward to ward, often depending on the demographic.
I admire what you are doing, and the way you are doing it. Years ago, one of my daughters and I went on a church tour in our area to see how the people worship in other religions/faith traditions. It was very eye-opening for us, and we found many things that we appreciated and admired about how other people express and share their faith. We hope that you and Joy and your family feel welcome and accepted here in Utah. God bless you!

@@Mounty621 There are different denominations for a reason. When it comes to LDS, they are not secondary doctrinal issues. At the risk of being a little vulgar, LDS doctrine is that Jesus Christ is a result of Mary having physical sex with an exalted man ( Elohim- as they explain him). And that Jesus Christ and Lucifer ( Satan ) are brothers, as Co-creations of Elohim. That directly Conflicts with John 1:1-2, Several sections in the book of Isaiah, the gospels, Romans, Thessalonians, The Revelation, Genesis 3:15, ECT, ECT.
LDS teaches that we are not born with original sin, therefore everyone who is not a Morman apostate will go to one of three levels of Heaven. The goal of each male LDS member is attain exaltation to the "Celestial kingdom", or third (highest) level of heaven, produce spiritual children with his sealed wives ( Mother God's). The poor ladies can look forward to never ending pregnancies in producing those spiritual babies.
Is it any wonder, that even the LDS Church has admitted, in their own releases that their founder, Joseph Smith had up to 40 wives during his lifetime. The youngest 14. He also had wives where one was the mother to another of his wives. He also made a wife of someone who was married to a man that Smith sent off as a missionary to England.
And we wonder how a man like Warren Jeff's can rise to power in the FLDS?

My wife looks at me funny when I cry too Jeff. I haven't seen a video of yours in a while, but I appreciate this one. a few clarifications I noticed might help.
    1. Many of the hymns we use would be very familiar to many Christians that have been around for a couple of hundred years, although possibly with slightly different lyrics and/or additional verses. There are a large number of songs in the hymnal that did originate within the church. I think some of these songs may have migrated out to other churches as well.
    2. Sustaining members to callings isn't just to affirm approval, but also that we are committing to support them in their callings. I've only seen an objection once in my lifetime. Sometimes objections are handled more privately after the meetings, but also very rare.
    3. Any drinkable, non-alcoholic liquid can be used in a pinch for sacramental water to represent the blood of Christ. Water is easy. This was revealed as a revelation to Joseph Smith.
    4. Priesthood, Generally each level of priesthood comes with increasing responsibilities at each level. Higher levels of priesthood can do all the tasks assigned to lower levels. Priesthood is an opportunity for service, although mean and women provide a lot of service within any ward.
    5. A common opening and closing of testimonies isn't required, but is often just the custom. Being in a younger ward the testimonies may sound a little more the same than in wards with older families. We have a deep reverence for Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon because it is what makes us unique, but it doesn't mean a thing without the scriptures in the Bible, and the knowledge it is all comes from God. We do have prophets who lead us, but we also believe in a confirmation of truth and personal revelation from God. We believe this church is the true, but also recognize there is truth found in many other's beliefs and practices. We are willing to look for and bring all truth to ourselves.
    6. Faith vs. Works - Especially when the church culture developed so far away from the rest of the country we often have slightly different customs and ways of saying thing that do sound very different. We are very aware that no amount of doing things will earn our way to heaven. I also felt a strong affinity to your comment about drawing closer to the Lord and he will draw closer to us. We do see that the Bible affirms that Faith and works are strongly intertwined in drawing closer to God. We believe in Covenants that require us to do certain things, which if fulfilled, binds God to us. For example, the sacrament ordinance is a renewal of our baptismal covenant, that reminds us to keep Jesus, and what he did for us at the forefront of our thoughts and actions as we strive to follow his example each day. Perfection happens in very small incremental changes in our lives a little at a time, and our covenants also remind us we are entirely dependent on Jesus. Simple enough for a child to understand and a lifetime to learn. Patience and a keen awareness of our mortality is important to understand that its not so much about perfection, but our trajectory in becoming more like Christ, and that it cannot be done without an intimate spiritual relationship with him.
It's very easy to talk past each other between each of our beliefs, but I believe your Faith is sincere. I can't ask more of anyone than to seek after truth and live. Thanks for a great video that helped remind me of a few truths.

Speaking of the Garden of Gethsemane and the atonement, the doctrine of the LDS church holds that the atonement began in the Garden and ended when Christ came out of the tomb and was glorified.
In the Garden he took upon him the sins and suffering of the world. The pain of taking this on him was so accute that he sweat blood. He carried that burden for nearly a week, before he was taken to the cross.
On the cross he paid the price for sin, having carried the burden, and was finally able to be released from his suffering.
With the resurrection he defeated the final enemy of physical death, ensuring our resurrection.
If any one of these three parts was not done the atonement would have been incomplete and thus would have failed.

Sustaining someone in a calling basically means, "I'll support you, I'll help you." It doesn't necessarily mean you think that person will do great. Part of what I think is beautiful is that we give support, knowing full well that we're not perfect, but we'll strive to do the best we can.

Hearing this review makes me appreciate my faith, it's uniqueness and it's commonalities. I have noticed over the last few months that there is sometimes references to an Evangelical interpretation regarding "doing" versus "surrendering." I'm concerned that, because of bias among those not of the LDS faith that there is still a dichotomy between works and faith rather than a melding of works and faith together. That doctrine--works vs faith--is an old and misunderstood doctrine.
For example, Jeff's interpretation of the scripture, "For we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do" was, if I remember correctly, was that it is a chronological thing; that in a framework of time, one is saved by grace *after* doing all one can. This is not the meaning of that verse, nor is it accurate LDS belief. That verse means that, no matter what I do, I cannot be saved without the atonement--the saving grace--of God's Son, Jesus Christ. It is not a verse that is speaking to chronological salvation, but to the absolutism of the atonement of Jesus Christ.
Of course, James 2 makes clear that our faith without works that evidence our faith in Christ is dead; it means nothing to God, much like the "righteousness" of the Pharisees and scribes meant nothing because there was no faith. Faith and works are symbiotic evidences of our belief and trust in God's grace. One cannot exist in purity and bring sanctification to us without the other.
    ephii 4:8
There are many verses in LDS scripture that teach that "no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the Spirit, that he may bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, being the first that should rise. Wherefore, he is the firstfruits unto God, inasmuch as he shall make intercession for all the children of men; and they that believe in him shall be saved." [2 Nephi 4:8, 9]
I hope that your study of LDS practices, doctrine, and faith will include the possibility that what is taught in Divinity Schools or among Protestant faiths regarding that faith might have some bias and some misinterpretation of the beliefs that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hold dearest to them. It is certain that members of my faith have many biases regarding the beliefs, faith, and practices of other religions. We will all do well to look over the fence of our biases and see one another as we truly are: disciples of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

In these meetings we invited all to share testimony of God and Jesus Christ and express their gratitude for whatever was in their heart no matter what religion or denomination they were.

One thing I was taught growing up is....Sunday should be different than any other day of the week, so on Sunday's we give God our very best which includes our dress. We wear casual clothes to school or in daily life. Sports clothes, scrubs, uniforms, etc. But, at the same time, we welcome everybody no matter what they wear. ❤️

Great point! I was taught as a child that we are going to commune with the King of kings. We should dress like that is where we are going. As I've gotten older, I understand better the significance of mourning for our lost Lord. Jesus Christ was confronted in his life about why his disciples didn't fast. He replied that you don't fast when the Master is among you, but they would fast when he was gone. I understand that now. We see a representation of his body, which was laid down for us each Sunday. It fills us with sorrow that He is no longer with us in the flesh. Part of fasting is longing for the return of the Lord.

This is from the church handbook talking about sustaining members in callings:
If a member in good standing opposes the calling, the presiding leader or another assigned priesthood leader meets with him or her in private after the meeting. The leader seeks to understand why the member is opposed. He asks if the member knows of conduct that could disqualify the person from serving in the position. If the opposing member does not know of such conduct, he or she is encouraged to sustain and support the person in the calling.

Just an FYI in the LDS we do not only believe that the atonement is for sin but for ALL the pain and suffering that comes with this imperfect life on earth. So we believe we can be healed from the consequences of the sins of others and the pain that comes in this life. That Jesus heals us. This is a very personal experience and not every wound will be healed in this life.

Thank you for share your insights. I wish my church put more emphasis on music on a ward level. I’m a singer and haven’t sung or have been asked to sing for almost 2 years… I miss it and as a mother of 4 (1-7 years old, and special needs) I don’t really have time to sing for fun… but when I would be asked to sing at church, it would allow me to put time aside to practice with a pianist. It was always always enjoyable, and a great way of me to share my testimony.
Each ward is different with music. I’m originally from Maryland and we had a musical number EVERY Sunday. After moving to Utah, When I went to the BYU ward and later on a singles ward in SLC, we also had musical numbers in the middle of the service. My ward I go to now only does that for Easter, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and sometimes when missionaries go on missions.
I’ve visited a few Christian churches and I was impressed with the musicians. The singers were right up my alley with the style of singing I enjoyed to sing, which usually is not done in my church on a ward level. The latter-day saints like to keep it very conservative, simple
, and reverent focusing on the vocal/musical ability. Many times when I would sing at church, I would vocally express myself a little more than usual with a little more soul, or a little bit of riffs and maybe project my voice a little but I try to hold back as much as possible, because we are supposed to keep it “reverent”. So I appreciate that about the Christian churches and even Baptist churches with their gospel music/choirs.

LDS are feed by our scripture study and life experiences. I receive teaching every day. I am fed daily by pondering the scriptures and being guided by the Holy Spirit.
I was raised Evangelical. Without the restoration of the fullness of the gospel by Jesus Christ there is now deeper understanding by the people. The baptism and confirmation is much greater than what you can see from the outside looking in. The gospel is from inside out not outside in.

I’m thankful for your goal in creating love and understanding between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other Christians. I am a member of the said church.
Several years ago, when I was in between jobs, I drove Uber for some supplemental money. Some would be surprised how many riders I had talk to me like I was a therapist or a religious counselor or something. It was fun. I did enjoy having discussions with various people on religion. I talked with Muslims, Jews and various Christians. Those experiences helped me learn to love all people and to find the common good and truth in what many people believe. Many people believe in God and heaven. And most people religious or not, desire to live a good life and have food loved ones around them.
Through the ages mankind has fought and lost their true focus because of petty disagreements or lack of understanding or an unwillingness to listen.
That’s my 2 cents. I love discussing religion. Especially ancient scriptures with those in Judaism.

I think Fast and Testimony meeting can be very spiritual and meaningful. I often hope the testimonies would be more Christ-centered, but I believe our language and culture has been heading that way over the years. I think it's most common to hear testimonies about spiritual experieces, personal revelation, and self-impovement.
I love your guys' testimonies about Christ. The purpose of the time set apart for testimonies is to give one's witness of Christ. It doesn't require a long sermon or story (though it can be helpful), and I think Latter-day Saints forget that sometimes. So whenever talking about the Church, the temple, the prophets, or the Book of Mormon, my hope is to tie it to Christ, because that's what should make those things valuable to us in the first place.
Thanks for sharing your experience and your testimonies!
