you are correct. the welding machine i was using has a foot pedal so I definitely could have just tapered down to avoid a crater but since a lot of tests are done using a scratch start and no amperage control foot pedal, I figured I would show the technique as if I was using a scratch start rig.
❤ you are awesome ! two of my children have chosen to weld as a profession! I shared your videos with my students over the years! I'm going back into welding after brief retirement and after years of teaching welding. Thank you for all your great work Jody!
Even as a beginner in TIG welding, this material is easy to follow. Your videos are informative and detailed. Thanks so much for your instruction and demonstrations!
Thanks to you I've been welding for 6 years now I'm 26 years old now I started off as a helper around 18 years old and within the second year of being helper they promoted me to a welder and it was because of your tips and tricks and I just want to say thank you and thank you for blessing us. God putting you on earth to help guys like me and I really appreciate it
Shout out to you Jody. I am a Union Boilermaker and have taken plenty of tests throughout the past couple of years and I ALWAYS find myself coming back to your videos for tips/tricks and reminders on techniques. Watching your videos always adds some confidence on test day, thanks again brutha.
Watched ur videos a long time ago my uncle has bin welding for 30-35 years iv never really put a lot of thought in to it till now iv done small jobs here and there just with flux core in the last few years and I'm actually going to make this a carrier this is a great way to learn before I take my tests good job
Hi Jody! I just passed my TIG certification from 6G 2" carbon steel pipe, so I just want to thank You for made it much easier with your tips and videos, and of course thanks to the Tig Finger. Keep up the good work!
You did a great job on this video! I loved it because of all the close ups! Don’t feel like your going on and on. Everyone has different techniques, so to see yours, gave me some ideas to try out tomorrow. Thanks again for the time
there are lots of methods that work. my suggestion is to find something that feels comfortable and work it. I use some wrist motion usually. all that chicken wing stuff makes me tired .
as far as taking a pipe welding test goes, it is probably wiser to practice with an air cooled #17 torch. That seems to be the most widely used in the field . You never know till you show up, but if you can weld using an air cooled scratch start with no foot pedal, you will not have problems if you luck up and get a small water cooled torch with a pedal.
in my opinion, yes you should learn to use both hands.... if at all possible. you will need to be able to use both hands on the job when you get in tight spots... But for your test, you can always revert to using only your right hand if you feel better about it and the test super allows it.
This guy is good, different technique then what ive been taught ,I have the prep gap about an extra 1 mm thicker then the filler and lay the wire behind the prep his filler must have more silicon to get more fill on the inside to be able to lay the wire on top of the prep
I perfer a big gap (5/32). Once you start doing stainless it will shrink alot if your welding over 4". It will shrink to a tight 1/8th sometimes. Always put the big gap at the bottom and feed the wire through the bevel. It it gets to tight bump down your amps and feed in a 3/32. You gotta get the penetration on the bottom that's why I don't like to key-whole or laywire on the bottom since you don't really know if it's going through breaking down that wall or causing concavity.
Perfect timing!!!!.............. I just started my 6G yesterday Awesome Video Jody this will really help me kick along........................ love the Spacers!!!!!! Heres the BIG question should I learn to weld left handed on the Hardside?????? would love to hear your thoughts on this????
Dang, beautiful welds man. I'm currently practicing on a 3" tube for the Boilermakers, the actual root dia is 1 1/2". It's really hard coming off that hard side but I know I will get it.
I tried this today n I'm not gonna lie it's pretty tough. I'd say the most important factors are making dry runs, being comfortable in your motions and most of all, correct amperage while monitoring temperature, if it gets too hot it won't weld right n you will waste ur time. Also if things start to get whack, bail out it's better to make a tie in rather than grind out shit weld and redo it
Great videos and very informative. One hint to anybody going for welding tests is practice and more practice. Also practice everything thing with both hands, welding grinding, filing cutting, etc. you will be surprised at how good you can weld with your other hand. And one more little thought the rules here in Canada can get stupid sometime too, LOL
Thanks again for the tips Jody! What is the key to get that nice bead in the inside of the pipe? I have had problems with getting a good bead inside the pipe, despite changing settings and welding style from walk the cup to back and forth and also lay wire. However I just can't get good bead on the root. It just barely breaks the corners of the root and creates a very flat bead. Similar that on your earlier 6G pipe welding video. Cheers Markus
I would be real curious as to what the root looks like on the inside. Personally it seems you were going fairly wide with your root by slightly going onto the bevel, which can cause suck back. I take quite a few 6g tests on heavy wall (.625) boiler tubes (2") and was always taught to not go any wider than the wire; provided of course if your gap is 3/32" and you're using a 3/32" wire or 1/8" gap using 1/8" wire.
I Just wanted to let you know everything i know about welding has come 80% from your videos. I am going to School in September. I just want to thank you for your vids. And i have a question. Would it save me money in my eletric bill to hook up my welder to a generator?
Note, tape containing chloride is not used because of the health hazards involved with the poisonous gas that forms when heated. I worked on a job where a bunch of guys got pretty messed up from using the wrong tape. I think it smells good, but your lungs and nose don't see eye to eye.
Hi Jody. How do you do a capping on a 2 inch sched 80 pipe on 6G by TIG Welding. Im having a hard time doing it. Any advise? I will have my test when i get to know how to cap it. Thanks
I always have a problem with it falling out on me on the bottom while doing the root pass and it q-tipping my tungsten any ideas on what would cause this I’m doing a keyhole dab technique I’ve been at 70-90 amps trying to try different amps to figure it out
What do you Pro's think about rookie welders that have passed the 6G test in school? I know I won't know EVERYTHING that their is to know about welding but would you trust me to work on my own, or should I try to hire on as helper?
I have been doing this 2 inch test for a week now and on a bend test I have been having some slag inclusions not much it's hard to see the angle of you're tungsten do you point it towards the rod or are you 90 to the pipe?
when walking the cup are you using a wrist motion my teacher says lock your wrist move your arm like a chicken flappin its wing what is the correct method for walking the cup
Hi Jody! I'm about to weld a 3" pipe at school, wall thickness is 8mm. Will a 3mm gap, a 2.4mm filler rod and about 75 amps be ideal with a dip wire root? And what angle should the bevels have? Thanks -Lars, Norway
Thanks once more Jody! Great video as always, with the explanations to go with the perfect arcshots. Also, have you thought of pyrex cups so you don't have to poke that electrode out further than you want? I've used them on occasion, and overall liked them. Just a thought. Thanks again
Jody, I have a question on torch angle. Most what you hear on tig is to keep the torch straight or up to a 15 degrees to the puddle. But most of the videos I see on a 6g shows the torch more at a 45 degree to the puddle. Could you please expand on torch angle on a 6g test? Thanks
Hello Sir Could you make a close-up video on a pipe in 6g when you weld the cap? It would be very cool because I cannot do it properly the weald bead very ugly. I found videos about the root pass only.
How much Amperes are you Using? Gas amount per minute? 'cause i see a lot of fusion when you take the arc out, up the bevel... I do these joints with a range of A between 50 and 80, nothing more. X ray tested, with a 4mm cup, 2,4mm tungsten, 2,4mm rods and 4 Liters per minute Argon flow. :) You should try making a longer crater filler time with a lower amperes... And I see you're not welding in a constant position... So an inspector cannot grab your balls if a overhead position looks worse...
i know im doin my 6g test today and you can not adjust the height or swing teh arm left and right ounce i carrage its locked in place my college teacher says its because in the field you cant elevate or swing your work piece think its crap for the test though
I'm a union pipefitter the second technique is better it's more forgiving, lays flatter which is what inspectors really want to see and is more likely to fuse just be careful your gap isn't too big or you'll just drop metal into the pipe
I have welding in several places in the world ..but what I see only in America they weld with short or no sleeves... aren't you afraid of the strong UV light of the TIG ..coz its more stronger then stick or MIG weld ....thats why The TIG using a tungsten for a more heat to weld ...what are the safety regulations in America..PPE/PBM
and... You didn't showed the penetration and fusion between the joints. I can see during the welding closeup that it should be clear and regular... But I still want to see! :D Oh, by the way, i'm not just a welder, i'm also an WI CSWIP 3.1, Have 2nd level on RT, UT, PT and MT. :)
when you go to take a 6g pipe test, your balls are in the hands of the test administrator. he can impose all the stupid rules he wants. There is no educational benefit. I am just giving tips based on my experience.
This reminds me when I did my high presser plate and pipe test for boiler and pipe line, back in that day, 6011 root was used, and 7018 fill, and cap, 6G what is that term. Never heard of it here, then again I am in Canada, been a welder over 36 years, never seen heavy steel pipe done using tig,but same rules apply... good vid,, I see you have a few trols as well, so have nothing better to do, put were is there vid..?? good job
6g is 45 degree angle it's the position I'm also a certified stick pipe welder but I need to get my combo in this is what pays unless your pipeline.union that's like 200k a year I met a kid outa local 798 pipeline union but when the work runs dry ur down bouncing around job to job only problem with pipeline...
Thanks so much Jody! Your videos are really great and show a depth of knowledge and a level of care that is superior. Thanks again man and keep up the videos. Shoot me a PM and I would love to send you a few of my custom decals. 'Mike
Going to take a all carbon tig test 2" pipe sch-80 test coupon my root comes out nice but at 6 o'clock it looks flush I've tried all the techniques and still flush? Inspector ses he want it at least a 3/32 pushed in? Any advise??
Migel magana DUDE....!!!! I'm having the same problem😞 I think either we're going to slow, not pushing enough rod, or rod angle. I was practicing today n my instructor caught me holding the rod flat. So tomorrow I'll hold the rod not straight up of course, but kinda of an angle n move faster while pushing in the 1/8 rod!
Another consideration that wasn't mentioned is that these welds are used to weld pipe that carries hazardous substances - think oil pipeline. You don't want those welds failing, so you need to know that the people making those welds are capable of making them properly - bad welds in certain situations can lead to environmental disasters. This is only one facet, but there are other reasons too - the 6G test is to separate the welders from the really good welders - the really good guys get the $.
i need a help...im a tig welder certificated with 6g welds...but i havent welded root on 6g position in about 10months...my new job that im going to requires that so today at current work i tried doing root pass and it doesnt come out inside not a one bit...i was using 2.4mm wire, tungsten 2.4 and gap was 3-4mm 90amps...and i couldnt get any passing on the inside...i putted in more wire and nothing...any help...please...what do i do wrong?..i go zigzag moves with wire in the bath all the way...
If you can just dip it in there w 3/32 wire quickly about 80 amps it'll lay super flat and if the puddle gets out of control get out, let it cool take a breath then. Get right back to it In about ten seconds lol
my problem was always trying to finish too quickly. take your time and let each pass cool for a while....get a drink of water often.
You are best Welder teacher

sginley67 doing that right now heading to a nuke for this exact test. He's the best!
local 110 here brother!
root information for you
Hows the money sir?

Hi Jody! I just passed my TIG certification from 6G 2" carbon steel pipe, so I just want to thank You for made it much easier with your tips and videos, and of course thanks to the Tig Finger. Keep up the good work!
This electrode is done by hand on sanding disc
You did a great job on this video! I loved it because of all the close ups! Don’t feel like your going on and on. Everyone has different techniques, so to see yours, gave me some ideas to try out tomorrow. Thanks again for the time
Have a tig finger and I really like it. You can use it multiple ways. They slide very well.
I should have watched this before I did my weld test, suck back is what got me on my weld test this morning.
there are lots of methods that work. my suggestion is to find something that feels comfortable and work it.
I use some wrist motion usually. all that chicken wing stuff makes me tired .
as far as taking a pipe welding test goes, it is probably wiser to practice with an air cooled #17 torch. That seems to be the most widely used in the field . You never know till you show up, but if you can weld using an air cooled scratch start with no foot pedal, you will not have problems if you luck up and get a small water cooled torch with a pedal.
air cooled 17 is the most popular. Its a personal preference thing. Personally I prefer to use water cooled #20 or 25.
Hi Jody-
Off the wall question- What type of set up do you do for the welding shots??
Good videos!!! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
in my opinion, yes you should learn to use both hands.... if at all possible.
you will need to be able to use both hands on the job when you get in tight spots... But for your test, you can always revert to using only your right hand if you feel better about it and the test super allows it.
Respect man
lol as a boilermaker doing waterwalls you have to know how to tig with both left and right hands
they are not bench welds where you can walk around it
This guy is good, different technique then what ive been taught ,I have the prep gap about an extra 1 mm thicker then the filler and lay the wire behind the prep his filler must have more silicon to get more fill on the inside to be able to lay the wire on top of the prep
I notice when you finish the tack welds you carry the arc along the side instaed of just stopping, is this to prevent craters?
you're # 1 You're teaching is TOP Notch...
Nice video Jody, the little details make all the difference! Subscribed

best welding channel on YT...thanks as always Jody
WE SHOULD BE CELEBRATING YOUR 1M SUBS BY NEXT WEEK JODIE!.. YOU WILL BE THE FIRST IN OUR GENRE ON YT TO DO IT (I THINK!).. GOOD LUCK!..
Thanks Jody for your tips for now I am a certified 6G pipe welder
Nice camera view of small keyhole. Do you see any key hole with the laywire method for the root ??
I am getting ready to take a test here soon
Just good stuff. No nonsense welding, and great instruction.
Perfect timing!!!!.............. I just started my 6G yesterday Awesome Video Jody this will really help me kick along........................ love the Spacers!!!!!! Heres the BIG question should I learn to weld left handed on the Hardside?????? would love to hear your thoughts on this????
Procedures here in the UK more often than not call for 2.4mm (3/32) filler and 120 amps (or thereabouts) for the root.
Dang, beautiful welds man. I'm currently practicing on a 3" tube for the Boilermakers, the actual root dia is 1 1/2". It's really hard coming off that hard side but I know I will get it.
I weld... Five times a year. TOPS.
I still eagerly await the next video =P

Hey Jody, are you using a triggerd torch or a pedal on this video..?
Scratch start

Won't this technique create a flat bead inside the pipe. I am guessing this is no good for a full pen weld asmei 1x
Hi Jody. How do you do a capping on a 2 inch sched 80 pipe on 6G by TIG Welding. Im having a hard time doing it. Any advise? I will have my test when i get to know how to cap it. Thanks
Can you tell me if the settings used here on mild steel would be the same if the test was stainless

I know it would be tough to get a camera in a position to view the underside of a weld of this nature, do you have any videos of such?
Jody, I have a question on torch angle. Most what you hear on tig is to keep the torch straight or up to a 15 degrees to the puddle. But most of the videos I see on a 6g shows the torch more at a 45 degree to the puddle.
Could you please expand on torch angle on a 6g test? Thanks
Do you have a video on 6G schedule 120 5p root? curious about fit up gap using 1/8 5p and 7018 hot pass and cap? Thanks for the videos.
Hello Sir
Could you make a close-up video on a pipe in 6g when you weld the cap? It would be very cool because I cannot do it properly the weald bead very ugly. I found videos about the root pass only.
How long would you say your arc length is here?
been waiting for a 6g pipe video... what about stick root pass on a 6g pipe??? hopefully one will come soon

So an inspector cannot grab your balls if a overhead position looks worse...
I thought you couldn't use the dip method on carbon only aluminum and stainless
Jody does it makes a diffrents if you have a water or air torch???
I usually use my left hand I find it way easier then trying to contort my right arm around even though im right handed
i know im doin my 6g test today and you can not adjust the height or swing teh arm left and right ounce i carrage its locked in place my college teacher says its because in the field you cant elevate or swing your work piece think its crap for the test though
thanks you show me why my root had suckback too mutch keyhole Thanks
After you have your tacks wheres the best place to strike up when getting ready to root it?
Your tacks should be at 12:00,3:00,6:00 and 9:00 o'clock start at 6:00 then you can stop at 3:00 and 9:00 to reposition
Can you do me a favor and tell me what kind of mini bolt cutters are those please and thank you
I always hang around until that keyhole pops open, never failed a 6g when thats happened, but failed a few without that keyhole.
im working on 2 inch sch 40 with 5\32 gap. can tou give some advice? my right side is perfect my left is horrible thank you
please can you make a video teaching how to make this support you caught the tube so I can train here at home
I'm a union pipefitter the second technique is better it's more forgiving, lays flatter which is what inspectors really want to see and is more likely to fuse just be careful your gap isn't too big or you'll just drop metal into the pipe
Im about to start tig welding at work, what is a good size tig torch? We weld mostly pipe. Thanks
Nice Theory's
as always a very informative video, keep up the great work Jody.....Paul in Orlando
Oh, by the way, i'm not just a welder, i'm also an WI CSWIP 3.1, Have 2nd level on RT, UT, PT and MT. :)
Why don't yuo make the Tungsten shorter and help yourself "rubbing" the cup between the bevels?
knipex is great but Kline linemen pliers work quiet well aslo
when you go to take a 6g pipe test, your balls are in the hands of the test administrator.
he can impose all the stupid rules he wants. There is no educational benefit. I am just giving tips based on my experience.

Awesome video jody
Which better Continuous feeding for wire or cutting feed?
Thanks for all the great videos!
Nice tig weld sir
This guy is awesome
Thanks so much Jody! Your videos are really great and show a depth of knowledge and a level of care that is superior. Thanks again man and keep up the videos. Shoot me a PM and I would love to send you a few of my custom decals.

Going to take a all carbon tig test 2" pipe sch-80 test coupon my root comes out nice but at 6 o'clock it looks flush I've tried all the techniques and still flush?
Inspector ses he want it at least a 3/32 pushed in? Any advise??
+Hoggy Bo Piggins why u say that???
back feeding is southern techniques. it all so leaves a heavier root with a better x ray pass rate. nothing wrong with that 537 fitter
Migel magana DUDE....!!!! I'm having the same problem😞 I think either we're going to slow, not pushing enough rod, or rod angle. I was practicing today n my instructor caught me holding the rod flat. we clip the tip of the wire before we restart.
+SergeantTubesocks ...especially if stainless or aluminum if it balls up at all or a hint of dirty
Thanks for the videos lots of info

He was saying to use 75amps and a dip technique with that size of rod and tungsten
you think that is bad look up a simulation tube test, now those get crazy
nice tips I just like it
Thanks brother
Ай Джоді молодец!!!!👍👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much.
If you can just dip it in there w 3/32 wire quickly about 80 amps it'll lay super flat and if the puddle gets out of control get out, let it cool take a breath then. Get right back to it In about ten seconds lol
