This was probably the height of his addiction. A lot of people don't realize he (sort of) cleaned up later in life. He was going through methadone treatment for the last years of his life. His swedish gf said he would sometimes pretend to be stoned on stage bc fans wanted it. If you listen to some of his life stuff from '90/91 it is significantly tighter. Live and Wasted 1990, and Live in Osaka '91 are better than any Heartbreakers live albums for this reason. RIP to Johnny, Walter, the whole gang.
Better than any HB live performance from 1980-1984 probably, because after that, he got kinda serious again (Dead or Alive show, reunion with Jerry and Arthur), but this is his worst era by far: the infamous "needle in the hat" era like on the cover of "In Cold Blood"
dude going to a methadone clinic doesnt mean he cleaned up - there are plenty of people who trade or sell their methadone/suboxone and buy dope with the money. ive literally seen and done it myself. he didnt pretend shit it doesnt matter though, none of that has anything to do with how great his and the heartbreakers music is
Omg, how did we not hear this?? Eddie Van Halen all over the news, R.I.P., but where would any of them be without these kind of rock rebels paving the way? R.I.P. Walter Lure
My name is Walter as well. But....it is sad to see Johnny looking like that. It is obvious that he has Cancer of a sort...had he looked for treatment, he could still be alive and giving his kids love & us great music!
@@tadsomato1940 yeah it isn't your right it was 79' and Keef never had a problem with drugs he had a problem with the police. but as some know to be a junkie cast a long shadow.
Wow. This is hard to watch. I am a recovering addict and being that wrecked doesn't even look appealing. Fuck that lifestyle. JT had talent, he didn't need drugs.
That singer? 5 years later and that comment still marks you as lame af and casts a shadow of lameness should you ever find a female who doesn’t mind procreating with a lametard and having a litter of lameletts… 🤦🏻
Great sound engineer; it's not often live footage from that era sounds this good (other than being actual there, i wish i was); i really like this performance.
Three words: GRETSCH WHITE FALCON. Never knew my dude Waldo played one, but it makes sense. It’s the perfect electric guitar. Best instrument I’ve ever owned. Got one because of Sylvain Sylvain, Neil Young and Malcolm Young. Continually amazed by how many of my favorite guitarists rocked a Falcon at some time or another. RIP Johnny. 🙏🏻
Thunders wore his junkie lifestyle on his sleeve. My god. Looks like that pulled the definition of a junkie trope from a movie on stage. Most musicians hide it ok. Thunders did not. lol
Great quality video. Never seen this one before. It is not from 1982 though. Since Billy Rogers is playing drums, this would be between 1980 and no later than 1984. The Heartbreaker's played CBGB's one time between that date span. This show was on January 8, 1983. I have the Village Voice ad to prove it. That was the last time JT officially played CB's. He of course jumped on stage with the Waldos and The Senders a few times though.
I saw Johnny Thunders playing a small, nothing club in Newport, Rhode Island in 1982 or 1983. He was doing the same mouth-probing speedball thing only he was even less coherent. The crowd stopped watching and emptied the small room with the stage. Most didn't know who he was or even the NY Dolls which shows how poor the booking was. I stayed watching along with about 5 others (yes 5). Suddenly he launched into a Wipeout type guitar riff that was really hot, there was some talent in there still.
Did Walter Lure sing this on the album too or is he just filling in cause Johnny is fuckin shot? I guess he probably must cause it sounds like the same. I don't think Walter gets nearly enough credit for the Heartbreakers. He wrote the music for "Love Comes In Spurts" which later became "One Track Mind" which is IMO one of their best songs and as you can see in this video he was the guy who apparently kept it together when Johnny was too fucked up to do shit on his own. Johnny is a great personality and a classic rocker but he couldn't have truly sustained a band on his own in my opinion.
Totally underrated, you're right. There are a lot more videos out now which show how he and Johnny share solos and play off eachother, this video is a good example. Definitely not just a rhythm guitar like some may think.
You’ve never been strong out.? Be thankful. Richard Hill is a genius for saving his ass. Johnny thunders is a true God. Put that in your pipe and smoke it
C'est difficile à regarder, même quand on fréquente Thunders. Le pire, c'est qu'on est persuadé que c'est le meilleur à la guitare. Mais la dope le retient. Trop stoned.
I remember him playing these little shows around NYC. I knew people who would go just to see if he would die. So Sad. What a waste of a very talented man. Drugs suck
I know this seems kinda random and most likely unintentional, but they're all wearing an accent of the hot pink on the L.A.M.F. cover. Johnny's scarf, Lure's tie, Nolan's pink striped shirt, and the bassists scarf...it's kinda cool...
No glamour in drugs. Just depressing to watch. Looks so jaded and sad to watch. I love Johnny Thunders and the NYDolls but now days drug addiction is such commonplace I don't see any fun taking any drug. They will control you and mess you up. Sad the way people talk all the time about drugs not about the great songs he wrote.

Was Waldo already working on wall street by this time? Also any idea why Nolan wasn't playing?
Wall St carried JT through the Heartbreakers years for sure
Exactly right~Walter Lure was so under rated with JT getting all the attention. We seen them a bunch of times, it was Lure and Nolan we went to see
