  • The Spike referred to the coal miners housing located on the north eastern side of Walton Pit. Its official name was Ings Cottages. The area famously flooded in 1947 and, as a result, the residents acquired the nickname of Spike Islanders. Looking at the site today it is hard to believe that a community once lived there. It looks like it has always been claimed by nature. I recently walked round the area with my dad who grew up in Woodyard Cottages at the other side of the pit and frequently visited The Spike while he was growing up. I filmed him as he recounted some of his memories and his account follows. Hopefully this will help people who visit the area today to visualise the buildings that once stood there and the community that lived there.
