Glad everyone was clear of that. I learned the mountains deserve our deepest respect at Snowbird in 2006. Got swept over a cliff in a small sluff/slide and was by myself, even wearing a white jacket like an idiot. Got lucky that day and made my guardian angels work overtime for sure. Stay safe LC.

Mother Nature always wins. While taking our 3p last run at Snowbird, we got caught up in a nasty squall. It went from 20 degree Blue Bird to extreme cold and wind in seconds. Winds from nowhere went from zero to 65+ almost instantly. The windblown snow was so thick, you couldn't see your outstretched black glove directly in front of you. The winds were so loud we couldn't hear the person yelling in your ear. The snow was so thick we couldn't see to descend. And it was getting darker... Not knowing how long we'd be stuck on the mountain, I got the shovel from my backpack and dug a narrow trench just to get us out of the wind. We were lucky. We ducked the winds and 45 minutes later able to see well enough to ski down. In another 15 or 20 minutes and it would've been too dark to see anything. Since then, I've added pieces to my ski backpack just in case...

It is scary when an avalanche happens in the boundaries of the ski resort. We were skiing Mammoth in 2020 when a huge avy broke off the top, traveled down to a main cat track. Talk about timing, we stopped to help a truck who was stuck in the parking lot. It delayed us by 5 minutes, otherwise we would have been up in that area. They shut down the lift just as we got to the front of the line. Unfortunately they shut down the whole mountain and the only powder run we got was back to the lodge. Waste deep powder too.

Everyone be careful out there! That persistent weak layer from the November dry spell is EVERYWHERE and the high winds and snow happening with the current storm are going to make the problem even worse. The next few days are going to be very dangerous, stick to low angle slopes and be conscious of exposure above if you do venture into the backcountry.

What ski tracking app was that? I was using one but the app store deleted the app so I cannot use it anymore. I from the east coast and last January I went out to Park City and ever since I am dying to get back. East skiing is nothing like the west. West skiing > East skiing
