I was there 1971 - 1972. The school band did a concert at the Royal Festival hall with Vera Lynn as one of the participants. First time i ever had cauliflower curry made by the Nepalese students.
My grandfather was there. He was in the Lancers. He was a conductor, but played cello, double base, violin. Lovely to see this. My grandfather passed in 1980.
I was there as a pupil the following year in 1981. It was known affectionately as the "crotchet factory" Great to see George Evans. A fearsome character. Anyone remember PORG ??? (pocket of resistance group) Basically a load of us who used to conduct night time nuisance missions. One of those was a squad of snowmen on the parade square that winter. We had three deaths that year. The bandmaster who died of a heart attack, as did the provost sergeant during a game of cricket, and a pupil died in a road accident. Can't remember their names.
This was so good to see, I was there in 1975/76 and had the best time of my life, a wonderful school and great friends were made along the way. It was so nice to see Mr Harvey in the film, the professor of music on Saxophone, He was the leader of the London Saxophone quartet, it was such an honor to be taught by him and Mr Dixon on Clarinet. Thanks for putting this up on UA-cam, it brought back many happy memories and a little tear to the eye.
I was there in 73/74. We recorded 2 concerts for the BBC, one of them featuring Imogen Holst conducting her father's music. I don't think they have ever been released to the public, though... :-(
Crying shame. Beautiful music, beautiful building. You'd think that the powers that be could have left at least this one in London in the wake of whirlwind Project MoDel et al - and, if money is the key, perhaps done a sharing arrangement with a commercial music organisation - what's the betting no one has even looked at that possibility. During my uni years walked on a daily basis past the parade square at RAF Uxbridge and watched "The Regiment" doing their stuff, sometimes with a band, I know stuff like this can be inspiring "Free" feature of local life. The way London's going its just going to become a featureless housing estate full of sub Parker-Morris standard ticky-tacky buildings.
Nostalgic, Thank you for sharing! Heard that Kneller Hall does not exists anymore!
I was there in 1982..and I'am a euphonium player.great to have lot friends there
