Will always love Harry Kalas, loved when he called the games. He will always be missed, R.I.P. to the legend.

Babe Ruth’s first World Series appearance was at the Baker Bowl playing against the Phillies in 1915, and Babe’s last major league game ever was at the Baker Bowl playing against the Phillies in 1935. The Phillies won both games.

I remember poking around the ruins of Connie Mack stadium back in 1974. To this day I regret that I didn’t grab the porcelain clubhouse signs. There were 3,one was the Phillies, another was the A”s and the third one was the Stars. The reason that the Reading, and the subway had major stations at Broad and Lehigh was Baker Field. Believe it or not there is a very faded sign by the Reading tracks that says that the Phillies use Lifebuoy soap. Just a little history.

My pop grew up around the corner from Connie Mack and they would squat in the abandoned stadium and get high.

Really enjoyed this episode. Learned so many things.
I'm a writer and would be willing to write that 10,000 word essay for the historical marker. I would enjoy the challenge.

I am a long time Phillies fan. I remember other old time Phillies broadcasters like By Saam and Bill Campbell who was replaced by Harry Kalas. Also Richie Ashburn who was a partner of Harry Kalas. Ashburn played 3rd base for the Phillies and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Back in the 1960's the Phillies were sponsored by Ballantine Beer and a home run was called a Ballantine Blast. Fun times.

I actually attended a couple of games at Connie Mack stadium also known as Shibe Park. It was very plain like most stadiums back in the old days but unlike the stadiums of today. The Phillies franchise has the second-longest streak of consecutive losing seasons in American professional sports, 16 straight from 1933 to 1948.

I loved this! I had no idea Philadelphia is so incredibly steeped in baseball history. I had to go to Wikipedia to get more information on the things you covered, and found that it has tons of facts about those places and people with some great old photos too.

    Hi,
For your viewers, Gen Meade's horse, Baldy's head is actually in the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Civil War Museum in Holmesburg (8110 Frankford Ave). Was returned there after the Phila Civil War museum closed in 2010. If you go to their online site, they have a picture of it in their Photo Gallery.

The PA historical marker program was paused a few years ago due to a “materials storage” and they haven’t brought it back.

Great Video. The Eagles also played there and won the 1948 Championship in an extreme blizzard. The A's have more championships then every Philadelphia team . Eagles have 4

Great facts on Phila baseball history. Correction on the Columbia Ave Park. Not between 24 & 25. Columbia Park or Columbia Avenue Grounds was a baseball park in Philadelphia. It was built in 1901 as the first home of the Philadelphia Athletics, who played there for eight seasons, including two games of the 1905 World Series. Columbia Park fell into disuse after the Athletics' move in 1909 to the larger Shibe Park, and was demolished in the 1910s. The site was a vacant lot on which manager and part-owner Connie Mack obtained a ten-year lease.[2] It occupied the block bordered by 29th Street, Oxford Street, 30th Street, and Columbia Avenue

If you look at the 1895 map of Phila the area N of Columbia, S of Montgomery between 24 & 25 was all houses. The map posted on Wikipedia may be wrong.

I WAS WRONG. The map showing Recreation Park off Columbia Ave (CBM) between 24th & 25th is correct. After 1886 the ballpark was sold to John Stafford who was a big housing developer. This is the park first used by the Phillies before they went to the Baker Bowl.
The park first used by the Philadelphia Athletics was between Columbia Ave and Oxford and between 29th & 30th. That park was demolished in the 1910s and is housing now.
