While agree that Snowbird is divine, I must also throw in Jackson Hole, Big Sky, and Fernie. All three could give the Bird a run for its money.

the 3rd installment of Ski Resort Rankings! this is the third annual video where we take all of the resorts we went to in the past season and attempt to rank them against each other based off my own subjective opinion. the things that are considered when ranking each mountain is level of natural terrain, accessibility to the mountain and overall snow conditions/pack.

Big sky is my favorite resort because of how gnarly the AZ chutes are, but I havent been to many other gnarly resorts. How would u rank big sky in the list if u had gone this year?

You mentioned some of the resorts (in CA specially) getting tracked out in 1-2 hours (which is true) . In your experience, which of the resorts on the list dont get track too fast?

@@rafaelramos634 I haven’t been to all but park city (especially abyss and hike to stuff off super condor) and some of the stuff at big sky stays good for a long time but sometimes gets pushed to the bottom

As an Oregon native, meadows is my home resort and I’ve always felt like despite it being smaller, it really does have more to offer than Bachelor, but Bachelor is usually hailed as the crown jewel of the state. Glad you really enjoyed the Heather/Private Reserve terrain, it’s sick stuff.

I like your reviews of the California ski resorts. I was born in Berkeley, and grew up in the east San Francisco bay area. I also grew up skiing at Alpine Meadows. As my skiing skills progressed, so did my use of the Alpine terrain. I branched out once I was an adult, and have skied Squaw and Sugar Bowl, but the one resort I fell in love with was Kirkwood. This was my 'go to' location during my 20s and 30s. The reason for this is that 1) the resort is at a higher altitude. Alpine, Sugar Bowl and Squaw all have lower elevations, with the base elevations of 6800, 6200, and 6800. Kirkwood has a base elevation of a bit above 7,700+. It is ok to ski near Truckee after a recent storm, but the the snow is always better at Kirkwood. 2) The 3 resorts near Truckee all offer nice stuff, but precious little of it is easily accessible from the top of a lift. You have to work to get to lots of it, and at Alpine, your primary access is via Alpine Bowl and Summit lifts, which are close together up top and you risk placing yourself in avalanche territory. Kirkwood, on the other hand provides much easier access, and to a larger, wider profile of the mountains there. Three lifts, The Wall, Cornice, and Sunrise, all provide easy access to a very large footprint of the resort. You get to ski lots of real estate. I strongly suggest you spend more time at Kirkwood, and block this time from the middle of January to the middle of March. Do some serious exploring. Your biggest challenge may be in Devil's Corral (access via Sunrise and traverse to Larry's Lip, or from The Wall) but don't miss Wagon Wheel, Sentinel Bowl, and Palisades. The Sunrise chair also provides GS and SGS super speed opportunities. Have fun. I can't offer to ski with you, as I am now a disabled senior citizen, but I do have a pretty good memory.

Great video, agree with others that this is super helpful for travel targeting. I always have better days at Alta than Snowbird but definitely recognize the difference in accessibility and scale. I’m hitting Solitude for the first time in February so glad to hear the terrain gets your seal of approval. Also guilty of thinking of Deer Valley as a groomer country club - I’ll have to give it a shot one of these trips.

alta and snowbird are both amazing. totally just comes down to personal preference. solitude is sick, as well, but might seem a bit underwhelming compared to alta/bird in LCC. and if ya can swing it, head up to deer valley and give it a shot for the day!

Nice! finally the ranking video! Ok, here goes my list. In terms of Wow-factor, I pick Kicking Horse. In terms of natural vibe, Revy. In terms of Iconic American resort, Jackson Hole. In terms of lift layout, Snowbird. And, Whistler is Big. And, If i have to pick my home ski resort out of those I mentioned above, it would be a toss up between Snowbird and Revy. Revy town is also super cool to visit as an American. It's like taking time machine to 20 years ago. That town is a vibe.

Speaking of kicking my ass. I’m old now but in 1977 skied Snowbird for several days on a journey out west by car. I was a ski instructor on the east coast. Skied Park City, Aspen, and Snowbird. I was 25 years old at the time. At the end of the day I could barely make it back to the room carrying my skis. Yes Snowbird will definitely kick your ass :-)

great list, I've skied many of these mountains. Turning 52 next month dropping in on 15 plus foot cliffs for me wont bring me to a mountain anymore. Most will hate what I'm going to say, but Vail to me is the have it all and then some mountain. I only ski the front to get to the bowls and use the front t get back. There is so much terrain you can always find un touch areas days after a dump. I almost always can find myself in an area and not see anyone around me and the massive face bowls all connected make it pure joy midweek. Great list and thank you!

I basically skied all the resorts in these two states Utah and California back in the day. Best night life Tahoe all the way oh and some great mountains Like Squaw Valley, Heavenly, Kirkwood and Sugarbowl. Mammoth another great mountain but like Tahoe it can get pretty windy up there. Utah, Best Snow on Earth bar none, include some great resorts and your in skiers paradise! Former pass holder in the 80's at Solitude, best bumps in all of Wasatch back in the day. My favorites no particular order: Canyons, Park City, Snowbird, Alta and Solitude all within a short drive from Salt Lake City...
I wish I would have ventured out into Wyoming or Colorado but once you find your spots it's hard to leave...

Bout to spend my 3rd season at Kicking Horse, Couldn't agree more when you said that it is some of the Sickest Terrain. I've always considered it more of a "Lift Accessed Mountain" rather than a resort. Even the Slack Country just outside either side of the resort has some really amazing spots and terrain, if you willing to walk, there is always a fresh line to find. Love to see it on the list even though you visited on a low snow year! Hoping for big dumps this year!

You are spot on about Big Bear. As an advance skier the terrain just isn’t there. But, namely, another resort, we can shred it in the morning and catch sunset from the water surfing. It doesn’t get better than that in your life.

Mammoth was my first Cali mountain I've been to (only been out west 3 times) and such a mixed opinion for me. I went during the peak of the peak snowfall this past record season and was first snowed out of the mountains, finally made it in, and was then stuck in town for an extra few days with a postponed flight. Only a few lower lifts were open and finally had Chair 22 open my last day, but man was it some of the most fun yet exhausting snow I've skied. The one run I had on 22 with my very tired legs was one of the hardest runs I've had with untouched super deep heavy (compared to Winterpark/Whitefish) snow but very memorable experience. Can't imagine what its like with the whole/upper mountain open and a bit less snow. Will have to go back one day.

I was surprised to see Alpental on the list, but it’s my home mountain, so I’m going to check out the video on your day there. Hehe I love that you ranked Kirkwood over Palisades. The Palisades crowd can be kinda like the Deer Valley crowd, if that makes sense, so they probably took that very personally lol. The fact that it's hard to get to Kirkwood is the best part tbh. All the North Lake resorts (specifically the megapass ones, Palisades/Northstar) get mad traffic because they're right off the I-80, and Heavenly gets way too full of tourists there to gamble and see the lake. If you go to Kirkwood, you're there for one reason, and on the days when the 88 is closed from the west but not the east, you get even less people on the mountain.
The best run I've ever had in my life was at Kirkwood last season: untracked waist deep bluebird pow off The Wall when they opened it right after a storm. I think I barely had to turn and just pointed straight down 😂. But the lifts there do suck though. If they replaced Chair 10 and Chair 4 with high speed chairs and added another chair on Eagle Bowl, I wouldn't go anywhere else.
As a Kirkwood fanboy, I will say that I actually prefer Palisades on really stormy days, because they will basically always open up KT-22 (since it's on the lower mountain). When the wind is too high, all the sick terrain stays closed at Kirkwood.
