My goodness this is a far cry from the original Airfix Tiger I tank I remember as a boy. From memory the original had individual wheels to cement and also rubber tracks that were a nightmare to assemble. Great kit though, a real challenge. Loved the video, thanks for posting...
I remember them too! Nowadays they suggest using heat to bond the flexible tracks instead cement and getting everything covered in black goo. These new starter sets are a delight, I must say.
Thought: Could you cut the top off the box and glue up the ends? Then you have a handy tray to keep all the bits in :) Save buying a tray and you know it fits :) Also once you're done you have a handy parts tray for paints, brushes, glues, etc.
More 1/72 scale kit builds! Great tutorial for painting too! I have the Airfix D Day set with german and american tanks and diorama for play or display.
I'm tempted by a diorama at some point - I've used various scenic stuff for my 15mm war-games figures in the past and I'm keen to try the techniques on something bigger. Maybe one of the D-Day sets. I'm going to try to do the Sherman Firefly starter before Xmas, but next year do some 1/35th vehicles as well.
@@leegtracer3763 this new starter set doesn’t have them, the tracks and wheels are moulded as I’ve piece. I’ll address the plastic track issue when my Josef Stalin arrives!!!
Ah, no idea I'm afraid. It was a very long time ago this build! If that's the little scoop-shaped bit forward of the square hatch then it only goes on one way as there's a little depression in the moulding of the turret.
With the detail wash, how about a 50% mix of black and the body colour, then thinned? The result should still bring out the details but be a darker version of the body.
Good shout. I did suggest using paper-clip in a more recent video, but I might put all these tips together for another "top tips" one. Some great stuff coming in from you guys!
I bought this kit after watching this, my first tank. Did you use some powder on the end of the canon, and did you use a coat of varnish before the wash?
Hi Adam, yes I used a little bit of weathering powder around the end of the barrel. I have a set of Revell powders, pretty cheap online, or Humbrol do one as well. Just a little at a time of an old brush and dab it on gently. Its what you can use for things like engine exhausts as well. I didn't use varnish before the wash as I wanted a little bit of it to stain the paint surfaces to make them look used. If you want one a bit more factory fresh then I'd use a gentle coat of gloss varnish, do the washing, then a coat of matt to seal it and make it look right. Best of luck with the build, and thanks for letting me know! Cheers, Gary

Purchased from Lidl's today, thank you (as ever) for the 'heads up'

Great channel Gary giving me renewed confidence to get back into modelling after so many years!

How did you get on with the horrible rubber tracks. I had to staple mine.

Hi Gary..I have just got this kit and have started to build it. Really enjoyed your build..
Good stuff Craig, hope you enjoy making your Tiger!
@@garys_stuff There is some great kits that are available in my local stores in my town at the moment..
Hello. Those are not spare track links. They're hooks to link the tow cables. Nice build!
Cheers Ian. I must admit that I'm not as familiar with some bits of tanks as I should be!
As a kid I always stayed away from tank kits because of the numerous wheels etc.. Having watched this video, I will give it a go!!
Let me know how you get on!
Great video Gary, I’ve brought the Tiger 1 and Sherman 1/72 as part of my first 5/6 kits to get back into the fun, cheers.
Both nice kits - I’ve got a Sherman on the way from Airfix right now!
@@garys_stuff brilliant, i hope to see as video :)?
@@liamgray9805 yes there will be!
@@garys_stuff really looking forward to it Gary.
Cool and great build 👍🏼 im thinking of building a tank also now
I think it’s a good one to start with and to practice weathering at a reasonable cost.
Brilliant vid mate just built one I recommend using tamyia extra fin poly cement easy to use but great model u have there
Thanks, I've just started using the extra thin for various bits of builds and it seems to do a good job!
Good build! Doing this one now myself. Have the old, original one on the shelf too.
Let me know what you think of this new one!
This kit looks basically the same as the one I was building 50 years ago when finished. Except for the dumbing down of the tracks.
I just picked up the Tiger and Sherman from Lidl today...get them before they run out - £6.99
Good stuff!
Nice video, very clear and helpful.
Thanks Swifty!
Hi Gary, brilliant video as always, i've learnt so much from your videos. One question, is the vent cover you put on the top the wrong way round?
Ah, no idea I'm afraid. It was a very long time ago this build! If that's the little scoop-shaped bit forward of the square hatch then it only goes on one way as there's a little depression in the moulding of the turret.
It's not a vent. It protects a periscope.
Thanks, Gary! By the way, what primer do you use please?
Most kits I use Jenolite acrylic primer for plastic from a spray can.
With the detail wash, how about a 50% mix of black and the body colour, then thinned? The result should still bring out the details but be a darker version of the body.
Good idea for the lighter tones of e.g. the desert Tiger. If it isn't dark enough you can always add more black!
Great video!
Модели - прекрасная вещь...чтобы провести время.
The only thing I'd suggest that you should suggest is,remove paint from the mating surface, and use a cocktail stick to apply the glue,

I built one of these when I was a kid
Was it one with those flexible black plastic tracks that melted when you tried to glue them together?
They were plastic but I used a hot screw driver end to melt thd ends
I believe that you can also donate your flying hours to the "help For Heroes", who will use them to obtain kits for veterans.
Indeed you can Peter, and I now mention this in all my Airfix videos and include a link to them in the info panels.
Did this in about 1965......the tracks were a mare ..
I remember some flimsy black stuff that melted as soon as it got a whiff of glue. Now they are part of a mould. So much easier!
