    props to subaru for putting the thermostat at the worst possible location while the oil filter is on top.

      Yes, true, but not all of them some are super easy like Outbacks

    Thanks for the video. I have a 2018 Forester, and I was able to get mine out without dropping the exhaust by using a 10mm open end wrench, by flipping it over and back, turning the bolt just a little bit at a time, until it was loose enough to get it out with my fingers. I put it back in the same way. I saw another video where someone else used a 10mm ratchet wrench but I didn't have one, so this worked. It just took a little longer.

      If you are asking , just look under the vehicle if the cats are in the front then yes. Most Outback's are much easier.

    Subaru service center just told me they need the car for 24 hours to replace the thermostat. They said it’s at least 5 hours work. Maybe you cut out the other 4 hours and 53 minutes of intense work in your 7 minute video.

    If you remove the exhaust manifold, you have to loosen the heat shield bolts to line back up with the 6 studs. If not, the HSs act like springs and prevent easy installation. Ask me how I know.

      Yes. It’s also mentioned in the FSM. An old rusty front exhaust may be easier. Thank you.

    How can you tell that thermostate is broken?

    • @motorcarnut
      @motorcarnut  3 місяці тому +3

      Good question! 2 ways, vehicle is overheating or overcooling. In newer vehicles they have what is called fail safe thermostats meaning when they fail they usually fail open so the vehicle is overcooling not to overheat the engine and cause damage.

      The new TCV can fail either way. Horrendous design.

      @@motorcarnut Hmm in my Forester 2011 I have extensive oil consumption. 1l/500km (quart/300mil) but mostly when Im going to long distances over 100km. Have feeling that engine is very hot, maybe thats the cause of extensive oil consumption. My deduction is that oil is overheating and leak through rings and valves? What do You think?

    • @motorcarnut
      @motorcarnut  2 місяці тому

      Doesn’t seem likely. Those engines in that year range have a known oil control ring problem, they tend to stick and let oil blow by. Unfortunately the only remedy is piston ring replacement which is a big job.

    Great video, just an fyi, subaru after 2009 should blue blue coolant not green

    • @motorcarnut
      @motorcarnut  3 місяці тому

      That is the best way to go but not really necessary as long as the coolant you buy is compatible.

    • @sam33more94
      @sam33more94 2 місяці тому +1

      I did it with prestone platinum. Prestone got the same component as the original, even Prestone is better If you look at the label. So no problem using the green one, it's perfect. I own a subaru forester 2011 2.5 engine.
