Just performed this job last night on my 2015 Legacy, 2.5L. The video was very helpful. As I've seen in several other comments, it's not necessary to remove the manifold. The video is somewhat misleading due to the camera angle. The location isn't incredibly convenient, but the job is manageable.

Depends on your model and year. My 2013 OB is just like the video in that I have to remove the manifold. Probably going to have to replace the studs and nuts due to rust belt reasons as well.

It's not as hard as it sounds, pretty basic tools you'll do it, doing mine now ,came back to see bolt torque specs, also while there is not a bad idea flush coolant and we are replacing lower radiator hose since we are there anyway

This can realistically be done without pulling off the manifold

There's no orientation for the thermostat? I thought you have to make sure it's facing a certain direction.

My buddy has a 2011 and its a 2.5. The thermostat housing bolts seem to be in front of block not underneath. Is this a larger engine?

same engine just older. note in the video it says 2013 and up. Im currently doing it on a 2010 and its in front like you said. IMPORTANT NOTE!!!! the older engines with it in front DO NOT NEED THE EXHAUST REMOVED.. you can just fit right around it (the bolts are not blocked)

What is the problem when the coolant in subaru legacy is drawn back in the reserve

Is the process the same for a 2015 cross trek?

You have to be absolutely F-ing kidding me. HOW can Subaru treat their loyal customers like this? NEVER EVER AGAIN will I buy a Subaru. I only got it because the wife likes them, but it's just horrific to work on & EXPEN$IVE as F for a mediocre car.

This right here is some Total BS! To change a thermostat you HAVE to do all of this. BS! i love how that manifold just come off so easily

You can change it without removing it. Plenty of room to remove the thermostat housing without removing the manifold.

I agree. I had enough room without removing the exhaust manifold.

If you don't remove the exhaust manifold, how do you torque the thermostat housing correctly?

As others have said, this is 2013 and later. 2010 to 2012 doesn't have this issue.
