I was intrigued by the subject of your video as that was the camera I wanted years ago but bought an EM5ii instead. I don’t have the EM5ii any more and I really regret selling it and moving to full frame. I don’t really shoot in low light at all but every time I buy a new camera I compare it to images I made years ago with previous cameras and they never look as sharp as those from the EM5ii, and I only had the 12-50 kit lens which everyone said was really bad; my copy was brilliant and really sharp so it shows you can’t always trust reviews.
Great advice Robin. KL is great for night photos. Last year I was out for a few night time photo walks. I can’t get over how friendly and happy people are to let you take photos, Nothing like the UK all you get is abuse.
Recently, I was at a birthday party of a friend from student times. I brought my camera. One person told me "Really. Do cameras still exists." The fact is, that most people just use their smartphones and those which use cameras are usually people who like photography. I personally have an Olympus and a Nikon camera. I like both. For street and macro photography and times when I want a lighter setup, I use the Olympus. For landscape I use the Nikon and or the rest I use both. And I share your opinion that gear does not matter as much as people think. Keep on making your content. It is always nice to see you. I buy you a coffee. Greetings from Germany. There was once a famous photographer who was asked about his secrets. The did say "Aperture of 8 and be there". ;-)
Thanks for the comment and I appreciate the coffee! Yes, gear does not matter too much and we should stop obsession about technical perfection. The important thing is the craft of making images.
Glad to see the Sigma getting some use. Those Sigma F1.4 primes are good budget options with great light gathering capabilities!

Hello Robin. I own the exact same model and this is still a very capable camera. I pair it with vintage lenses, mostly Canon FD lenses. I use an adapter reducing the crop factor (x0.7) and I get amazing results. I took very nice photos of the total solar eclipse in May here in Québec. Original E-M1 + Canon FD 70-210mm f/4 + adapter.
Would you kindly share with me what adapter you are using please ? I too have the same camera, some FD, M42, Konica, and vintage Pentax PK mount lenses. You are correct, this is a very capable camera !!!
Hey Robin, thanks for posting all of your videos! Based on your recommendations, I just bought a EM-1 and a 12-40 2.8. I have 8 Canon cameras, full frame and APS-C, but I really wanted to see what I could do with micro 4/3. I sometimes shoot 10 hours in a day, and the full frame cameras with pro lenses REALLY get heavy! MANY years ago, my first "pro" digital camera was an Olympus E20-N, which had a 2/3" 5 megapixel sensor, and I was able to get great 16x20" prints from it, so I am quite confident that Micro 4/3 cameras will have no problem in my work.
I moved up from a first-gen OM-D E-M5 to an E-M1 Mark ii, and it still works great as my #2 camera for wildlife photography. The new OM-1 has some neat tricks, but apart from burst rate the new features make little difference. AF is not really any better, and animal ID only works when you don't need it. Those OM-D cameras hit a sweet spot in mirrorless evolution. All OM Systems needs to do is not mess them up.
I still have my EM-1 too. It is getting lonely since I got the OM-1. You are taking on some conditions that always challenged me with the EM-1 and proving it is still quite capable! Good on you.
Thank you, Robin, for another awesome video. You were one of the reasons I was able to make the switch from Sony full-frame to micro four-thirds, and I have had a blast with my EM1 II, along with my EM10IV and my EP 5. I hope that OM system puts more R&D into it to keep it going.
Always love your videos, Robin. I've learned so much about photography and about my own camera. Your videos have inspired me to purchase an E-M1 Mk II to start my own business.
Your commentary about the technical stuff not mattering so much is absolutely spot on. I've recently shot with an E-PL8 and 17mm 2.8 pancake both of which I got for cheap 2nd hand. It's been a fantastic setup, and once one worries less about technical specs, one starts concentrating more on the actual picture (and the fun).
Keep going Robin. I bought my E-M1 immediately they came out to replace my EP2 and E-M5, got a great deal on the 17mm 1.7 with it. Still use it as my main camera. I bought a Lumix gx8 for 4k some time ago but it gets little use and I have a sony A& which I use for my array of old lenses to get double value out of them, actual Focal length on the Sony and double that on the Olympus. I see no need to update at this time either.
I have all three Sigma lens for micro 4/3, a few years ago i photographed a baptism with the EM1 MKII and the 16 mm f1.4 , the lens is sharp at1.4 and did a great job photographing the event, people say one of the weakness of the system is that you can't get the shallow depth of feild, but in this case I used it to my advantage,,at 1.4 on a 16 mm lens every thing was sharp and in focus and the lens having a field of view equal to 32mm was a perfect focal length, the compact size of the camera and lens allowed me to photograph the event without being a distraction.
I am not a fan of the Sigma F1.4 on Micro Four Thirds, as they were not made natively for Micro Four Thirds, they were larger and heavier than necessary, and image quality was not really optimized.
@@Emerald_City_ I don't know of any fast primes on most systems that are stabilized, and I have full frame, APSC and 4/3, not many f.28 zooms unless you go to pro glass have OS, the Olympus 1.4 & 1.2 glass are not stabilized and they cost more than the Sigma lens. The sigma lens was made for APSC but the New long Olympus zoom was made by Sigma for full frame, Olympus changed a few things but it is still a full frame adapted lens that coast twice the price. I have used all three sigma lens and the 56mm is small compared to the others but today not every 4/3 lens is small, the Panasonic 10-25 mm F1,7 is as big as most full frame 24-70 lens, getting back to the three Sigma primes I have used them to photograph in a lot of different situations, even a wedding no problem at all. lastly. Panasonic released the G9 MKII for all purposes it's the same body as the S5 &S5 MKII full frame camera so while $/3 for the most part is still the most compact system the size has increased over the years'

How about the low light IQ? Does it do well comparing to E-M5II? It's dirt cheap now. I also want to ask about the condition of the E-M1 now? An authorized Oympus dealer here is (in)famous for their services. The cost of services are extremely high and there are no parts for unauthorized camera service.
