    The gear is 12-spline…and fits a 3/4” socket. So, with a bit of research I found the Tekton impact socket has almost exact 1” OD with pin hole. Alleviates the need to cut up spool or buy 3/4” bar stock. Instead I’ll get a single short length of 1” ID pipe and use that with shorter winch-to-roller drive shaft. Will finish project this weekend…thanks for the great vid!

    Found this channel tonight. I’m pretty picky about the automotive content I watch. You basically already had my sub when I saw you listed everything in the description and even gave the exact cost breakdown at the end, but what really sealed the deal for me was the Puddin’s Fab Shop hat.
    You are clearly one of my people.

    This is a good project for folks to get into. Also, in my opinion it's what men and women need to do and get out there and build stuff and repair stuff with their own two hands. We need more of that in this country. It's how it was done by our parents and for sure grandparents. A feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction of a job well done. Not to mention saving a few bucks!

      @@madgingercustoms Not necessarily better. All depends on the height & thickness of the angle leg at right angle to the bead roller frame. The angle bar would need to be a total of more than the four walls of square tube at right angle to your frame. "Use what ya" got is likely plenty for the metal gage thicknesses for which you plan to use this roller. 16GA and heavier is likely asking too much of these type of roller as compared with the size of the frame on the one made on Japhands/Make It Kustom.

    Great video! I used a similar approach to the drive system on mine, but a bit simpler. Using the drive motor off a small 120VAC chain hoist as the donor eliminates the $100 for the expense and time to build a 12VDC power supply. For the speed controller, I used a couple of sewing machine variable speed foot pedals -- easier when slowing for cornering.

    Just received all my Amazon parts as per you list. I could have found a sewing machine pedal a used motor and other stuff from craigslist but I didn't want to run around town gathering parts. I am using a 17mm 12 point socket in the drive coupling as one of your viewers did and welded it inside a 2 inch long round tubing, the other end i machined (have a mini lathe) to fit over the Bead roller shaft, drilled a hole and welded a nut on. The rest is pretty much going to be identical to yours. Thanks for you video! subscribed

    Of all the videos I have seen on these rollers, this is the best. I have been wondering how to make a power supply for this and now I know. Everything is compact and a lot less noise than if using a cheap saws all drill adaptation. Kudos!
    I have a similar unit and I am going to reinforce it to lessen the flex by adding angle steel from used bed frames. Many people throw them out and the steel is very good. I also believ that triangulation is better than flat stock or box tubes.
    The Wire clamps for the junction box are $3.00 for five of them. I like your prices better.
    Another video for you to make on this would be adding improvements such as a guide fence for long straight beads. Being under power, it is easy to relax and just let the rollers do this and that could cause a ruined sheet of metal.

    This is probably the cleanest, most professional DIY conversion I've seen. I've seen guys use wiper motors, drill motors, etc. I bet you could save a little more and use a smaller winch, but at that price it probably isn't worth it. Eastwood has their 19" beed roller for like $149 via IG link right now and if you build a stand you could be in this well under $500. Nice work. You have a new subscriber

    It seems like there should be a way to use the deflection to trigger the motor. As you push the metal in, the motor pulls in the direction you push. Then, if you stop, it stops, and if you reverse, it reverses. Micro switches and solid state relays may be able to do it as long as you dont turn up the speed too high.
    If you want to be real fancy, you use a variable load cell to detect the amount of deflection and adjust the speed with it.

    • @madgingercustoms
      @madgingercustoms  3 дні тому

      We don't want to be that fancy! Maybe if we used it every single day. Hmmm

    Dont over explain it- If someone has the intelligence to own and operate a bead roller, they can get if told ONE TIME that you dont need to weld stiffeners into the frame in order to motorize your machine - Other than that- good Video, Good Info (I would think solid square bar rather than tubing would have stiffened that frame up better?)

      Sometimes I feel like if I don't explain everything down to the little stuff I'll end up with a bunch of questions. Most people do not watch the entire video, they skip.

      It really could use more bracing for sure but I've been using it like it is and it's been fine.
