I missed out a few books amazingly! I had to re-record this video, so apologies... In my brain, I'd covered everything. I think there's more than enough to look at though haha!

My main issue with 'The Cursed Child' is when Harry tells Albus that he wished that he wasn't his father. That, for me, was the key moment where I knew that the men who made this book had no idea who these characters truly are. Harry Potter, the boy who was pushed away from his aunt, uncle and cousin, alone and without his parents, telling his son that he wished that he had never been born was just too awful to grasp. He knows what it's like to feel unwanted, so the fact that they made his son feel the same way to the extent where he runs away, was terrible. The whole "Voldemort being a father" also annoyed the ever loving fluff out of me.
Elizabeth P That part made me sad. But while I think your argument makes sense, on the other hand I think the way it was in the play also made sense. People who were abused or mistreated by family as children can repeat that with their own kids against their better judgement, without realizing it right away.
I know it slightly let me down especially Albus and Harry. I blocked it from my mind and remembered the deathly Hallows instead
Hello! All the books are in the video description! :D And the link to my vidmas playlist is here: ua-cam.com/video/pc5ZNGl-Nw8/v-deo.html
So I had to re-record this video, so originally I said more and covered everything! As I was pressed for time and didn't script, I did the best in the time I had! I feel I've missed so much out. Also, I wasn't too well when I shot this - back - you can hear in my voice I'm not up to scratch! At the end of the day, it will do! I hope it's enough! Doing all these videos is tough, so sometimes we have to cut corners.
Thank you for linking the books! It may be time for an amazon order! 💜
About the Bone Season series (One of my favourite books) there was a third book published THIS YEAR called 'The Song Rising' (For me personally this is my favourite book so far) xxx
REPLY
Beckie Jane Brown I really want to read a bunch of these books. Besides One Life and If God Then What, are there any other books that deal with/ or even mention religion? I get (severely) triggered by things like that and wish to avoid them.
If you love If I stay there is sequel called Where she Went and it was equally as fantastic.
you said tico rice instead of rico tice and i dunno why that made me laugh so hard. great vid thooo
OH NO! REALLY?! AHHHHH!
I am constantly getting his name the wrong way round..... BUM! :D
HAHA
This is what gives your videos the special extra little loveliness
I picked up on that too and immediately paused to look in the comments to see if anyone else did.
I highly recommend another book by David Levithan, Two Boys Kissing. The way it's narrated is beautiful, I found.
I absolutely loved that one, it made me cry-
Yes me, too. At first it confused me and then it brought me to tears. Worked so well.
I need to ban that harry potter book out of my mind and replace it with my fantasy about what happened to them.
Wimsem - Tekenen & Knutselen same I was slightly disappointed reading it
You should read the perks of being a wallflower. It’s one of my favorites
I really hated "Cursed Child".. I imagine it's great to watch as a stage show, but storywise, it was just awful, and like some sort of really bad, cliche fanfiction. (which it was, since it wasn't written by Rowling) It contradicted canon in so many ways I can't even begin to list them all.. plus spoilers, for those who have yet to go through the pain of reading it.. :/
Congrats on reading so much this year!
also, I'm really happy that you're doing vidmas :)
God i hated the harry potter script...
I love it when you talk about books, it's so interesting
What did you mean with "we all know how that movie went"? Back to the future 2 was amazing.
Haha! It's got a reputation for being the worst film in the franchise.... though it's a good film really! :)
I wouldn't call it reputation but it was pretty fucking successful.
It is the weakest of the 3 (has a massive paradox in it too lol)
Yes I can read the wikipedia page too lol.
LongNightOfSolace Actually, I haven't. I'm not surprised it's in there but I managed to spot it all by my lonesome 😉 it's one of the reasons I dislike time travel in movies lol
Im just about to finish my 20th book and that was my goal and i’m so proud of myself! I think i might be able to get in one more :) I just read If I Stay and i’m just finishing Where She Went! I much prefer the sequel but I did enjoy it
This is such a nice video! Love it. Thank you.
I like how you don't put pressure on yourself to read 10+ books a month or something like that. You're right, it isn't a competition and people shouldn't feel bad for reading less/more than others because it's the personal experience that counts 😊
Tim Keller is so good, his books and online sermons are always hitting me hard and help.
Clicked on this as soon as I could! Just a couple days ago I was rewatching a bunch of your other book related videos. I love how passionate you are about all the books, even the ones you didn't like!
I'm so excited for your videos everyday💕😊
As someone who has analysed The Handmaid's Tale (the original), the book is supposed to not have journey because a man has put together Offred's tapes and not Offred herself. This is to show that Offred may be lying, she has no power to be active in her own journey, and to show that the lecturer might have put them together in the wrong order. I hope this helps! 😊
20+ books in one year, wow! I struggle with reading one per year, but I am a bit of a slow reader. Thanks for putting the books in the description, think I will give a few of them a go :) I think it is so hard to find new books to read, so I mostly just re-read books which can be a bit boring.
I highly recommend the secret diary of Hendrik Groen! It’s a Dutch book written from the perspective of a very old man in a old people’s home in a bad neighborhood of Amsterdam, it’s so well written and aaaah I love it ❤️🌻
Regarding 'Cursed Child', I also wasn't a massive fan of the script. However, I saw the play a few weeks ago and it was AMAZING. It's such an amazing story to see unfold on stage, and really makes it feel like Harry Potter, with a twist. I would definitely recommend you go to see it!
I like your book reviews because you say clearly if you've liked them or not. ^^
Congratulations on hitting your goal!!
Margaret Atwood and David Mitchell, two of my most favourite writers. If these choices did not take your fancy may I recommend:
'Black Swan Green' - David Mitchell
'The Blind Assassin' - Margaret Atwood
or maybe something else
'The Buried Giant' by Kazuo Ishiguro
'A Strangeness in my Mind' - Orhan Pamuk (the protagonist, Mevlut, is just the sweetest of characters)
Great video Rebecca- I love to see what other people are reading! I love that you didn’t hush about every book, and I think we can all relate to loving a book and then being let down by the ending. I’m only commenting because I think you missed out a reason for reading - entertainment!!!! To be honest - that’s the number 1 reason I read so much.
I didn't think the Cursed Child was so bad. When I first started it, I wasn't sure I liked it, but I still ended up liking it by the time I got to the end.
I agree with the Cursed Child, i tried so hard to like it but I couldn't the characters just felt so off and the storyline just wasn't good, I think it was because JK didn't write it on her own, supposedly she didn't have a lot to do with it.
I also decided to read more this year, so I've been taking a book to the pub with me on my night off (I also listen to audiobooks while driving/cycling, but I'm not counting them lol)
I like how books have so much time. There's so much in them and they can give you so much of an idea as to how the world works in that particular place or time. I'm not much of a reader, but reading can be a fun activity.
Thanks so much for this video! I have noted four of them on my 2018 reading list haha. xo
I love these types of videos and I love hearing your perspective and reviews. I'm finding it harder to read young adult fiction as I'm aging away from my teen years (about to turn 21) and I wanted to know if you feel similarly? A couple books I'd recommend are Water for Elephants, Silver Linings Playbook, The Girl on the Train, and Room (but I know you've read that one). Xx
My plan was 25, but have managed 67 without pressuring myself. You've done well to pass your goal. :)
I really love your book reviews, i've ordered some... I'm such a book worm, I can't stop aha
Seeing Harry potter live is so much better. The technical side of it is impeccable and had me hooked. I definitely recommend going to see it.
If I stay is a trilogy, next is Where She Went and I Was Here. The first are available as Audiobooks (on YT) and then there is the FILM. I picked this one up at a thrift store and it was definitely a few good hours of entertainment. I hope you enjoy some of the extended content!
Idk if others take this seriously but to me this is very important. Books are dear to me for many different and complex reasons so seeing people read and talk about them makes me ecstatic.
I'd recommend at least one of Stephen King's books, despite you not liking the darker subject matters I think you should give his character and story building a try. I also recommend Boy Called It, London Spy, and Caroline (the book that was made into a movie). Even if you don't give them a try, I'd love to see which books you read next.
Parts one and two cc play is brilliant
I read the whole of the Bone Clocks and it doesn't get better!
If you liked If I stay. Try Before I fall. Without spoilers its almost the same premise different idea
I think you'd love "The Girls" by Emma Cline. As a HUGE bibliophile, I love hearing people share what they've read. I only just caught up with your videos. Looking foward to the rest of Vidmas! Honestly you're the only content creator I could stand 25 days of. xxx
I actually donated my copy of that this summer as I couldn't get into it... I did try! Thank you for the recommendation though!
Josie Ball Yay! So glad you love it. Such a great read. x
Loved this video. While the only book I've read by David Levithan is "Everyday," I do believe there is a sequel to that book so maybe that's why the ending felt like there should have been more. Also, since you say you're more of a visual person, maybe graphic novels are more your thing. The only one I've read so far is "Fun Home" by Alison Bechdel, so I don't know too much about what's out there but it did read pretty similarly to a text-only novel, just with more art. It was also a bit faster paced than I find traditional novels to be.
i love ur voice it's so soothing
Thanks for that video, now I want to pick up reading again. It's been 3 months that I haven't read a whole book.
I always have such a hard time at reading for fun because I do sooo much reading at university... I can only read in the summer vacation when I have no studying to do.
In terms of Cursed Child; I think the play itself wasn't bad (the plot still wasn't as complex and good as I'd expect from Harry Potter but the effects were amazing) but being a play, there was a lot less emphasis on the dialogue and that made it so much better, though I still found it weird how much Scorpious and all the kids faced over their parents. I think the big mistake was selling the script as a book without the play. It ruined it and I feel it was just for money :(
I always am so interested in all the earrings you wore in every videos. Will you do a video about all the jewelry you have?
I think you would enjoy Carry On by Rainbow Rowell especially since you love Harry Potter. It is similar as it involves wizarding school but is still very unique and exciting!
It has definitely inspired me to read, I read about 5-7 books a year on average I would definitely like to read more
I truly love yours vidmas and yours vlogs in general, if I could suggest some books,I truly recommend three of my favourites like: A thousand splendids suns by Khaled Hosseini, Letters to a young poet (a short book but really deep) and the dairies of Etty Hillesum 1941-1943 (another deep book that talk about her faith and believe in God). That's all my suggestions, :) xxx
I think I've recommended these before on your channel, but some of the best books I've ever read are A Voice In The Wind and An Echo in the Darkness by Francine Rivers, which are part of The Mark of the Lion series. If you haven't read them, you need to.
The Handmaid's Tale is a very interesting book to study. Offred's 'journey' is very little as, perhaps, a representation of her inability to have a 'journey' in this patriarchal society, or develop as a person/woman. The fact that the story is narrated by Offred makes it unreliable (in my opinion all narrators are unreliable, only giving another layer onto a story), especially as we don't know what effect the indoctrination of the society has done to her and the fact that she is, as she says many times, 'losing her memory' of the past, so much of what she says is, as she calls it, a 'reconstruction'. Everything Atwood writes is intentional and interesting, and everything, as you said, makes the story have more layers to dive into, which is why I find it incredibly interesting, from not only a literature student's view, but as a historian, as it reflects on MANY historical event and countries. XX
I'm actually glad you didn't like the cursed child. I really question the intelligence of those who liked it.
One that I would definitely recommend is "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" by Mark Mason. Only read if you are comfortable with adult language and themes (sex, drinking and drug use), otherwise it was awesome. People tend to either love or hate his stuff though.
I have read All quiet on the western front, Harry Potter and the cursed child and The curious incident of the dog in night.
You know I'm up late when I'm this early commenting, not seeing the vid when I wake up! Lots of love Rebecca!
WHOA! Quantum Leap?!?! Awesome reference... I'm impressed!
BTW, Ill get to work on those B/W sunglasses (IG Post)... I'm your guy!
I picked up The Cursed Child with every intention to keep it separate from the HP series and I'm so glad I did. I willingly forgot about it for the most part, but it just seems to leave a bad "taste" behind.
Thanks for sharing the other books. There are several I will definitely read. I used to read so often! I would love to make it a priority again.
i have been watching your videos for years, and I'm so glad that in the past year or two you've been getting back into reading. I see the comparisons between Eleanor and Park, and Tfios. I think that if you ever decide to give Rainbow Rowell another chance (personally my favourite author) then I would suggest her book Carry On. Again it is a young adult book, but it is essentially her take on Harry Potter, which i know you love. Just this year alone I've read that book twice, and i think that there is a possibility of you enjoying it at least slightly.
I honestly did not like If I Stay by Gayle Forman, nor did I like the sequel Where She Went, and although it has been 3+ years, I don't think i would try to read it again, in hopes of enjoying it the second time round. I can suggest her book I was Here, which is really well written, it's just based on a touchy subject.
The Cursed Child. I don't know where to start, I read it, I enjoyed it, however I don't know if I consider it cannon. Mainly because it's not a full fledge jk rowling Harry Potter book. I jumped onto the Potter train pretty late in the game (Christmas eve 2016 was the first time i had ever started reading the series, and i had never seen the films) so i too hadn't read it until pretty late after it had been released. I would love to see it honestly however it doesn't come to New York until spring 2018 and even then that is a 8 hour drive and going to America. If i ever get to see it, i do think it may change my opinions on it, as I've heard it to be magical and immersive, so who knows.
I apologize for writing more than my average classmate does on a school essay, and I thank you for spending your time reading this. I hope you at least google some of the books I've suggested (although no hard feelings, everyone has different taste), and I hope that you have a great rest of your morning/day/evening/night.
I really recommend reading the sequel to "If I Stay" - I gave it 4 stars solely because it is such a powerful *continuation* to the story (at least that is what I think).
But yeah - "Where She Went"! Do check it out :)
Oh, Can you please talk more about Everything Everything? I liked it a lot. I have seen your video about The fault in our stars (that's how I found you) and I would love to know more how you think about their similaritys.
(hope this makes sense)
I️ feel the exact Same way about the cursed child !
Congrats on going further than your goal!
I think I expected too much in mine to read 50 books this year, currently on my 37th I think
Beckie!! Trust me on this give Rainbow Rowell one more chance and read Carry On. It’s a fantasy, similar to Harry Potter and I think you’d enjoy it.
There is a series on "the handmade's tale".it's first season is out.
I completely agree with you on pictures in adult books. If I can find an illustrated copy of anything, that's the one I'll get! Love hearing your thoughts on books - both here and on Goodreads :) Also, if you're looking for recommendations, I recently finished The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison and it was absolutely amazing. I think you might really like it!
I have The Bone Season and If I Stay, but I still have not read them. I guess I will have to now!
Damn I’ve been trying to read more too but I just couldn’t find the time 😭
You simply must do more book related videos... book reviews, book talks (spoilers included maybe?) etc. Also, i would like to recommend to you 'Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine' I read it twice this year and is definitely my most favorite book and it would be magical if you could do a proper review like the one you did years ago for TFIOS 😄😄
I want to read new books but I dont know what to read, so these videos are handy
My NYR for 2018 is going to be read more books so thank you for the inspiration/recommendations!
I recommend The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. A beautiful story. Also Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.
"You Are A Cat" by Sherwin Tjia. A Pick-a-Plot book. Silly, I know. Silly can be important.
C.C Play part's 1&2 is brilliant
I went to see the Cursed Child play earlier this year, and was similarly disappointed in terms of the story (no spoilers, don't worry!). In many ways I really enjoyed the plot, and the special effects were beyond amazing. But some of the dialogue felt like it didn't fit the characters, I found myself thinking "So-and-so wouldn't have said that". It was obvious that someone other than JK Rowling had written the story because it didn't feel like the characters I'd become so connected to over the years. This also ties in to some of the plot twists - I didn't feel that the characters I knew would have behaved the way they do in the play. But visually and emotionally, wow!!
Cogheart was beautiful
I totally get what you are saying about the Harry Potter book I was so exciting to read it and felt a bit deflated. I feel maybe it would be better seen as the play version. Love this videos you should do more book reviews you are harsh but are not without a fair critical view. 😍😀
You’re a hero to me
Happy 500th Video :) xxx
AAAHHH OMG 500th VIDEO!!!! Massive congratulations Rebecca!!
It's not, but thank you! I've over 1800 videos uploaded on this channel. 1300 are private! :D. So it's more, 1800th video haha! :D. Cool you spotted that though! x
Beckie Jane Brown No I'm aware that there's so many and of coarse when I first watched your videos they weren't on UA-cam but I still thought this was a bit of a milestone of viewable videos. :)
I'm not a big fan of Eleanor and Park, and haven't read Landlines due to reviews. However, if you're willing, I would really recommend Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell! Coming from someone who also doesnt like Eleanor, Fangirl is a really great, personable book.
I read Eleanor and Park through audiobook and god I hated it... I did finish it, but it just... no. I have read Fangirl too, which I enjoyed well enough, but it wasn't as great as my expectations going into it. (Eliza and her monsters by Francesca Zappia is one I LOVE and I think you might too, it has visuals too.) But a book I did enjoy from Rainbow Rowell was Attachments. I feel it's more mature and more subtle. Also set around the 1999-2000 millenium change which is just a fun thing to read. Maybe, if you give her another shot, you could look into that one.
I wish I had more time to read, but uni is kicking my butt with deadlines, sadly. I'm currently halfway through Dante and Aristotle discover the secrets of the universe, but I don't have the time to finish it :(
I have yet to read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and also Landline. I have read Eleanor & Park, three years ago, but it took me two weeks to read. And it takes me about a month to read a book. I have a mental disability but it has nothing to do with reading. I’m just a poop. Hahahaha.
Hello Beckie .The book Every day has sort of a second book to it and it's Another day.
By the way i loved video.😊
Did you use the Zoom mic on the video? Sounds different from other videos.
Have you thought about reading Turtles All The Way Down by John Green? Or did TFIOS completely turn you off of John Green? I liked TATWD, as someone with trich, Aza’s inner monologue really struck a chord with me, and it’s so well written that I found that I had to put it down because I was getting anxiety from it (which isn’t necessarily a good thing but I did find it fascinating that I could get such strong emotions from a book). If you do end up reading it, and I totally understand if you don’t, could you do a little review of it? ❤️
I don't want to read it I'm afraid, even though I now know what it's about - mental health. Sorry, is Aza the main character - she has Trich?!
Beckie Jane Brown yes, Aza is the main character, but she doesn’t have trich, she has OCD and intrusive thoughts (but I could relate it to my trich easily, is what I was trying to say haha)
If you are a visual reader (like me!) please, please read Ways to Live Forever by Sally Nicholls. It is a book for teenagers/young adults, but it can fixate someone of any age
Have you seen the cursed child play? how was it?
Hi. May I ask do you prefer paper books or e-books?
Yes I agree with The Cursed Child Review! I was super disappointed!
❤️
As a PLAY, The Cursed Child was magnificent. I feel like you have to watch it, if that makes sense?
Have you ever read Watership Down?
i read 5 of murakami's books this year
what do you mean by catalyst?
what?! Back To The Future 2 was a great movie!!
Harry Potter 😍😍😍
It seems like you enjoy a lot of fiction yet you do explore non fiction as well. :) Good for you! Plus, reading that many books is a great achievement, good for the mind! I'm considering Ash Hardell's book, I've yet to buy it tho. Lastly, thanks for the feedback with the HP book. ~Seems I should pass on that one. Disappointing tho.
Why don't you accept friend requests on goodreads?
Did you use to live in South Woodham Ferrers???
Who is asking?! :D
BECKIE💓❤️💓❤️💓
sweet Heart darling❤️
