People dont realize that without ROGER LINN music instrumentation would not be what it is today. Thank You Roger! - Logikbomb (Will Wade) - DC Producer
It is true that Tempest first shipped in 2011 (nearly 6 years ago), but I'm not aware of any current analog drum machine that equals it in terms of sound, workflow, features and versatility. It certainly is very popular among professionals and I think we've made an instrument that will be in use for many years to come.
You should try to reach out to Sufjan Stevens to see if he would do a demo video or something. It would be a huge long shot, but he's an avid user of the Tempest, and does some very interesting stuff with it in his music (and I'd love to see him explain his process). Cheers!
What I love about the Tempest is that although it pays respects to the classic heritage of analog drum machines, it is distinctly unique and forward-looking in its own right. It stands on its own as an instrument, and cannot be replicated. A true classic.
Has been my songwriting tool for years, best workflow. It just needed more memory, polyphonic recording and a full 16 channels of MIDI in. Looking forward to a Linn sampler/mpc killer SOON!
Elektron RYTM MK1 and MK2. Roland MC707, Arturia Drum Brute to name but a few and all have most if not like the Elektrons more features with super sound quality and all vastly cheaper.
Was lucky enough to meet Roger the other day. Not only is he responsible for some of the greatest electronic instruments but is also a genuinely lovely chap!
I love this instrument. I had to leave the States for 5 months while traveling around Russia and I brought my Tempest with me. ~ So convenient to have both an analog drum machine and poly synth together in one unit, which fits so easily into my carry-on luggage. It's the kind of instrument where you already have so much fun with just knowing the basic operations, while you don't feel like you're at a loss because you haven't mastered all the features. It always satisfies no matter your skill level. I'm always learning something new.
Roger Linn, please let me give you my humblest thanks to you for creating the awesome LinnDrum which I've had the joy of using and still use! Thank you for the best drum machines in history! The Linn kick is THE kick to go for. Have a great summer!
It's because he designed it... usually these demos are done by people who have no idea what they are doing. I agree, a flawless explanation, but I can't say that I'm surprised.
Got my Tempest only a few months ago and it's a sound designers dream for both drum and non-drum synthesis. Thanks for all the effort you put into designing the Tempest! This video is almost 6 years old and there still is nothing on the market today that does quite what the Tempest is capable of, which I think speaks volumes about its design.
Buying one tomorrow. Owned your classic machines in the past, but I'm so excited about this! I will be having a few late nights! Thanks for an amazing machine, as well as all your previous classics!
Just got one today. Blown away by the complexity, and the unique sounds out of this machine. I a excited to dig deeper into it, and learn how it works.

It's brought a whole new dimension to mine. Peace
You really outdid yourself with tempest, Roger. It's an absolute masterpiece - something that challenges users to fundamentally reconsider how they approach beat-making. Thank you for putting so much hard work into this machine. The tempest sitting in my bedroom feels like a loaded gun. It's the only machine I've ever had that has truly scared me because of the possibilities it presents, like standing in front of the monolith in 2001 - and I'm just a monkey playing with bones.
superb explanation - articulate and intelligent ----- so well done. I am ordering mine tomorrow. It was between a Tempest and a Toraiz sp16 and decided on the Tempest.
@rogerlinndesign I' am honored to have your best creation. The Roger Linn MPC 3000! I LOVE it and will always have it as the main piece of my studio. Peace 2 U Rog! - Logikbomb (DC Producer)
Very inspirational instrument...I've been a huge fan of DSI since the Evolver... I own a few pieces...but this is my first Roger Linn instrument. So far the menu system in intuitive. The sound is of course fantastic.
Thanks Roger! I saw you and Dave Smith demo and play this wonderful instrument at Moogfest in 2014, where I got to thank you in person. Hey, thanks again :) Nice demo!
Hi Roger thanks for making the best drum machine I've ever experienced!! A great use of Electricity, Electronic music would not be the same without Geniuses like Yourself and Dave Smith!! Best Wishes Jamie :)

I have a NI Maschine. After watching this, I can see the vast superiority in sound and ease of use of the Tempest. I am selling my Maschine immediately (and sellilng a few other things) to afford this fantastic creation.

@FromPoetryToRap It needs a laptop, factor that in and it basically costs the same or more. This is standalone and for a lot of people the appeal comes from the fully featured inbuilt analog synth

Thanks Roger. By the way.. .What is that speaker-looking thing in the background?? THe thing with the green horned pot on top of it? Also I f*&$ing love the Tempest! Amazing machine. When I can (lots of other crud to sell first..) my next purchase will be the PRo 2 - tried it in the shop yesterday and was amazed - wonderful!!
It has most of them but its focus is synthesis. Also, that video is from 2011 and after selling 5000 units, Tempest was discontinued by Sequential around 2020, so it’s no longer available.
Sorry, I'm a bit dense. Just to be straight, it can play 32 different sounds in a project, but it can only play 6 at a time right? How does that work with the 6 outputs? Do certain sounds share a specific voice, so for example, the bass drum and shaker would steal from each other's polyphony?
I understand synthesizing and everything, but i don't understand the display or how i start a NEW empty project so i can synthesize my drums from SCRATCH.
I wish I could could come up with a my own idea of a sampler/drum machine workstation cross between the mv 8000 mpc 3000 and the mpc 4000 and the mpc 60 with the ppqn of the mpc 5000 that's all tho
oh btw hope you've seen the latest Blind Test // Drum Machines - Episode 23 (Electronic Beats TV) video - theres Tempest in there and it sounds awesome
Almost 10 yrs after release basically nothing can compare to this device. I would really really like to have one ,Roger Linn, would you please send one to me?
Roger Linn Can I send you my address? :) In all seriousness, this is ultimate gem you and DS developed. There are many great machines around, but most of them either too sample-dependent or just too wild and hard to articulate. Tempest is right up my alley, with deep sculpting options and superb synth engine, plus classic sounds. Whenever I used it, it basically cuts through the mix with little or no processing at all. You sir are one of the true pioneers of synth engineering, and we can hear your legacy on countless classics - and now Tempest is a part of contemporary music of all possible genres and sub-genres as well. Thank you for being great and providing us with such amazing tools.
Hey any Tempest users here- how do I assign my own Beats in sequentially ordered pads per Project like the presets? I can't find any video or instructions that are relevant to that
@lazerfaceband to each their own indeed. if people would like a standalone instrument though, (this mostly counts for hiphop producers), cheaper than this instrument, is the BeatThang. Doesn't even need a power cable, any keyboard can be connected to it, does everything, probably even more than the Tempest. They both good though!
I'm looking for a machine that lets me play sounds that remind me of vintage machines such as Linn, drumulator, Roland's TR, etc. can this drum machine put me in the ballpark? Is it constantly loading of sounds like the mpc 2000? The elektron AR sounds too club music to me.
I think you're looking for a sampler, but this is not a sampler. This is an analog drum machine that happens to have a bank of about 450 mono samples for use as sound sources in the analog signal chain. If you're not interested in the analog sound, I think there's no reason to spend this much money because there are lots of cheap drum machines that have all those old sounds. It's easy to make those old sounds because they're all pretty poor quality, given the poor digital technology of the day.
2 questions: 1) Can you do on-the-fly destructive erasing ( punch in and out) within a pattern on the same pad? (2) Why does the pad produce noise when there are no sounds assigned to that pad?( FX are all off)
1) Yes, if you hold both Erase and a Sound Pad as the beat plays, then notes of that Sound that exist in time while both are held will be erased. It is destructive (removed from sequence data) but pressing Undo will undo the erasure. 2) I'm not sure what you mean. Hitting a sound pad with no sound assigned produces no sound. Are you referring to a specific location in the video?
Not the video at all; I bought one and have been programming it. When I turn all of the wave-forms OFF on any pad there is audio noise coming thru the main outputs. I first thought it may be the distortion fx on the "Main-Out" section but it wasn't that.
If you're saying that under those conditions you hear a quiet hiss-type noise, that's normal for an analog product. If you turn off the sound source that feeds the filter and subsequent signal path, you're still turning on the signal path and will hear any analog noise that comes through from the lowpass filter, highpass filter, VCA, feedback or gain increases through modulation. If you want silence under those conditions, digitally modeled analog synths will give you that but not the true analog sound, which is presumably why you bought Tempest. Or if I'm misunderstanding the problem, it's best to contact DSI support as they know more about specific support issues.
Roger Linn What happened to the sampler version of the Tempest? If I recall correctly, you were making the Tempest Sampler separate, but you changed it up some to where it wasn't exactly a Tempest, but still a sampler... It was my most anticipated sampler, but I can't find any recent info on what became of, or is still to become of your project.
I’m currently working on it. I can only develop one instrument at a time and for the past few years that has been LinnStrument. But I’m back working on the sampled-sound drum machine.
Roger Linn Roger, I really appreciate your response. Thank you. The Linndrum was my introduction from my uncle as a child to your work, and later became the reason I fell in love with the artistry of your Akai MPC60 and MPC3000 designs. My uncle showed me music production, and passed on the love for your music gear, sort of a "lineage" connection from one generation to a new generation. I've noticed that you include your name in your instruments (Linndrum, Adrenalinn, Linnstrument), I thought maybe I'd throw out a suggestion since I've experienced a connection through the generations... The *Linneage*. I think that would be such a fitting name for your work. 😀 Personally, I loved the idea of the Tempest with the 16 pads, but with sample recording through audio in's, and sample import/export. Of course an old MPC user is going to love that idea, right? Haha!
I will be first in line with a fistful of dollars for this! I would love to hear more demos with the " bass guitar " or synth sounds being used tough. Could you demo some of the synth stuff please?
Hi Dom-- Yes, you can do any time signature. And no, you cannot add distortion to a single drum sound. Keep in mind this is analog distortion, keeping the entire signal path analog. Tempest's distortion is not simple, which is why it sounds so good and like a guitar amp. It consists of an input high pass filter (like a guitar amp's preamp) followed by a soft-knee distortion (for tube-like distortion characteristics) followed by a lowpass filter (like a guitar amp's woofer speaker), and the entire signal path is stereo. It would add significant costs to put such a distortion circuit to each voice, and then you wouldn't like it because it wouldn't give you the sound of multiple drums distorting each other, in the same way you wouldn't like the sound of a guitar amp on each string of a guitar.
Roger Linn Okay, thanks very much for the reply! I just notice on many of the demos that the snares in particular sound quite weak, perhaps due to not enough tweaking? I'd like to think this machine is versatile enough to produce a punchy "real" sounding snare like the "Old Kit" samples for example (are they samples or synthesized on board?), however most I've heard so far aren't that far off something from an 808.
I think it's more accurate to say that you don't happen to like the sounds in the video. Each Tempest analog voice consists of 2 analog and 2 digital oscillators, 450+ samples, a 12 or 24 db/oct analog lowpass filter, an analog highness filter, analog feedback path, VCA, 5 envelope generators, 2 LFOs, 8 additional modulation paths and 160+ parameters. This is dramatically different than the very simple 808 voice. The sounds used in this video from 5 years ago are purely analog sounds than I happen to like. If you search UA-cam for Tempest videos, I'm sure you'll lots of sounds more to your liking.
please roger linn incorporate sampling and make a classic 12 bit to 24/96 true sound workstation also 16 bit 44.1 kHz into the machine also blue monochrome screen and cd burning included classic roger linn swing asq 10 mpc 3000 build on sequencer
@Jane Travis: Sorry, no you cannot load samples. Tempest is not actually a sampling drum machine like, for example, an MPC. It is an analog drum machine that happens to contain a bank of around 450 fixed mono samples that can be used as sound sources in the analog signal chain instead of the analog oscillators.
Hi Tim- It’s been a while since I worked on Tempest and Sequential’s support will probably give you better answers, but given that it’s a weekend, I’ll try to give you a quick answer. To change a sound, press “16 Sounds” (so that the first 16 Sounds of the selected Beat will play from the 16 pads) and “Pads” (so the screen will show the names of the 16 loaded sounds), then press the sound pad you wish to change and turn Soft Knob 4 (“Load Sound”) then Soft Knob 3 (“Sound Folder”) to select a different sound folder (Kicks, Snares, Hihats, etc.). Check the manual for more details. Or If you haven’t seen my “Tempest QuickStart Video”, it’s helpful for fundamentals like this. Thanks for owning a Tempest.

I would be wondering what else can be heard in the life performance in mono? panning is very extreme
no va synth built in but on a data cd included from dave smith
Great video. I used to own the Linndrum back in the 80’s. Does it have the same drum sounds from the Linndrum & from the Linn9000 as standard ?
It has most of them but its focus is synthesis. Also, that video is from 2011 and after selling 5000 units, Tempest was discontinued by Sequential around 2020, so it’s no longer available.
Many Thanks 😊
Jeff Goldblum is narrating
Jeff Goldblum as the android from Alien
Why’d you do that? I’m trying to pay attention, but now I hear only uh well only....that.
yes yes yesss
omg totally it' s Goldblum. love it
Almost 10 yrs after release basically nothing can compare to this device. I would really really like to have one ,Roger Linn, would you please send one to me?
Sure, my pleasure. :)
Nemanja Živić
Thank you for your kind words. I like it too. :)
Hey any Tempest users here- how do I assign my own Beats in sequentially ordered pads per Project like the presets? I can't find any video or instructions that are relevant to that
so can you import your own sounds into this or is it just its internal presets your able to use? ive never seen one of these before !
I'm curious to what artists Roger Linn and Dave Smith listen?
Thanks for your time and input.
oh wow... I think I want one. will get back to you sometime next year ;)
i love hearing you talk.
when you make a drum machine like that but only deals with user samples i'm buying it.
Send me one Roger. My music really needs it.
How big does my fortune have to be in order to have one of these in the studio?
You can do rudiments on this? Can I use drum triggers with this?
Personally, I loved the idea of the Tempest with the 16 pads, but with sample recording through audio in's, and sample import/export. Of course an old MPC user is going to love that idea, right? Haha!
Thanks for your kind words, Anthony. I’ll try to make a drum machine that you and your uncle will like.
I'm gonna listen to this everytime before I go to sleep..damn
Dat noise and dem sibilants.
It Sounds So Good.
I am itching to hear some demos from buyers
should give 1 of these to Plaid or Wagonchrist to demo
I love the wood ... so classy
can you tell me please how to turn off safe the tempest?
Sorry-- I don't understand your question because nothing is lost when you turn off power. Can you give more detail about your question?
Turn on transcribe audio for extra information.
Just purchased one finally so happy.
EverettDudgeon138 this thing is almost 8 years old!! as dope as it is, I hope you didn't pay more than £1k for it
+Nyakz Yup I did and I couldn't care less.
I will be first in line with a fistful of dollars for this! I would love to hear more demos with the " bass guitar " or synth sounds being used tough. Could you demo some of the synth stuff please?
Can you do other time signatures? And can you add distortion to a single drum sound?
Hi Dom--
Yes, you can do any time signature.
Roger Linn And one more thing: Can it do sigs larger than 16? 17, 23... etc?
Yes, it can do any time signature with a numerator between 2 and 64 and a denominator of 4, 8 or 16.
please roger linn incorporate sampling and make a classic 12 bit to 24/96 true sound workstation also 16 bit 44.1 kHz into the machine also blue monochrome screen and cd burning included classic roger linn swing asq 10 mpc 3000 build on sequencer
Hi guys, might be a dumb question but can you play notes un quantized? lazy? thanks
also can you load samples? thanks
Yes, you can record beats unquantized, so they will play back exactly as performed.
@Jane Travis: Sorry, no you cannot load samples. Tempest is not actually a sampling drum machine like, for example, an MPC. It is an analog drum machine that happens to contain a bank of around 450 fixed mono samples that can be used as sound sources in the analog signal chain instead of the analog oscillators.
yes!!! I love it. thanks
thanks for quick reply. Well thats ok as it's a beautiful machine. cheers guys
I literally can't figure out how to find sound banks and pick kicks
@@rogerlinndesign wow, thanks for your reply, I'll give another shot. The sounds are the best I've ever heard, just need to learn to use.
Can you use this to sequence external synths?
wow, didn't know it costs that much...alot of other options for a ton less, Akai's MPCs, Native Instruments Maschine, Arturia's Spark
