Laurel's grandfather was Leonard Kronandonk, one of the best baritones in pop music in the 20th century. Smoothest baritone I ever heard. He was with Fred Waring and his Pennsyvanians doing one night stands for decades. My husband worked with him and we visited him and his wife often while they were living in Florida. Laurel gets her vocal chops from him

She was my conductor & clinician for the New York State All-County Jazz ensemble, and she is the sweetest, most talented woman I've ever met! She was amazing and it was such an honor to be conducted by her.

There are really no words to adequately describe how utterly sublime a vocalist and performer this lady is. With due respect to the other members-all terrific vocalists , Laurel makes my heart melt when she sings a ballad like this or Heart's Desire. Beautiful in every way. I am so glad I got to see them live even just once back in the '70s.

At 16 , I was so smitten with this song , with Laurels rendition and Manhattan Transfer. I stood in my burgundy velvet thrift store dress outside the Roxy on the Sunset Strip for 3 hrs to make sure I got a good seat.
It took almost 3 more decades for me to have enough faith in myself to perform as a full fledged jazz singer myself. and I do sing this scotch and soda sometimes. 💕

Beside enjoying singing that just takes me back from age 78 to age 18 riding on the riding on the train from Great Lakes of drill walkie seeing you with my wonderful friend he was from New York and there's nothing he enjoyed more than going over to my hometown in Minnesota and going to a polka dance he had the time of his life and then we'd have to run back the next day we came on Friday night at 90 miles an hour across Wisconsin Joseph J Fallon is deceased his memory lives on and there's honored what I sing this song

Wow...I was a huge Manhattan Transfer fan as a kid, and I never realized how beautiful Laurel's voice was. I was so sad when she left the group because I liked her better than her replacement (not taking away from Cheryl though). I agree with a previous poster...they don't make singers like this anymore. Laurel is a national treasure.

Laurel, you sing so pretty! Subdued yet bright, gentle yet strong. Love the contrasts in your voice. And all as smooth as velvet. (Oh, and I got all the words, too!)
THANKS for a sweet-as-scotch version of my favorite song.

What a performance! Fantastic example of the heights to which cabaret or club type singing can reach. The phrasing and vocal control are just perfection. I accept that 100 years from now we will still be listening to The Sex Pistols, but I would like to think that we will still be listening to this too.

Your feelings are well-taken, but I would suggest, for an extra dollop for you, the Kingston Trio version, live-ish, here on YT. I go back and forth as to which is most beatific.

@@ThrustusSimmonds Just found this! :) I have the same dillema. BUT, after 50 years of waffeling I finally decided that this was the winner. Laurel's vocal with it's great lilts, jumps, punches, soft hooks, and original phrasing is unbeatable.

This was the one that originally did it for me. Had a crush on that voice ever since. That's a long time to have a crush. I'm not the jealous type, I'm happy to see that a lot of people 'feel the way I feel' too. I'm still on Laurel's Wagon, but it's crowded up here, ha ha.

This is a good interpretation, but it will always be Bob Shane's song to me. I knew him and told him that once, but he said no. It's a great song and ought to be performed by others, not just him. Rumor has it, though, that Sinatra liked Shane's version and would not do the song

It wasn't just a near fatal crash she was in. Her jaw was wired up, so for years she could not open her mouth wide enough to sing properly and hit the high notes like she could before. And MT wanted to continue their career. So she was replaced in the end.
