    This is actually a huge misconception. I know this "guitarist" means well... but his info is COMPLETELY false. When properly using a capo, you must always open and close it over and over to make it look like its talking, and then give it a little kissy on its capo mouth.

      Capo is a great tool if you just wanna transpose stuff higher, i use a capo for example when i wanna try if something i wrote sounds better higher up. Yes, you can use barre chords to transpose but some chords don't work that well if they use open strings. This is especially the case with open tunings. I don't understand where this notion comes from that using a capo makes you somehow less of a guitarist.

  • @KarstenJohansson

    Before the capo, I learned about this from a sticky nut. I always had to make sure the tension was reasonably balanced on either side. Especially if I bent a note or used the whammy bar. So for me, using the capo this way was instinctive.

      Yep! As soon as you think you have it tuned, just by playing it, it stretches the wire. Try leaving the capo on it for a while and it'll be out of tune too.

    • @Hoolahups
      @Hoolahups 9 місяців тому +3

      @@DustanMooreeven more than that, guitars, due to the nature of frets, cannot be in tune to more than one key. It's just a neat little quirk of the western tuning system.

    • @Ryan_Spitz
      @Ryan_Spitz 9 місяців тому +17

      @@Hoolahupsyou are thinking of intonation not tuning. The guitar is in tune on open notes. But because of the physics of string vibrations you can't have 6 strings of differing mass, tension and construction all have proper pitch at every fret. If your more interested check out fanned frets. Those guitars aim to tackle this exact problem. The fretboards most of us use are just the "best" approximations for the whole.

  • @400_billion_suns
    @400_billion_suns 10 місяців тому +40

    If you play any bends at all using a capo, this is not a good method. Even just normal playing will eventually equalize the tension on both sides of the capo, and any fine-tuning you did this way will drift off as you play.
    If you really want it intonated with a capo, (1) make sure your guitar is well-intonated to begin with, which happens at the bridge; (2) use fresh strings; (3) tune and release the capo tension briefly after every tuning adjustment. Check and repeat.
    If you have a quality guitar with a good setup that is well-intonated, you won’t need to do anything but put the capo on and play.

    • @NautilusGuitars
      @NautilusGuitars 9 місяців тому +6

      Solid advice and I appreciate you sharing it here for people. Especially the importance of setups. You're dead-on. I've been a full-time luthier for 15 years and said much of the same, but there's even more that _really_ makes a difference. I'll paste part of another comment of mine for people to see, to add to the knowledge in your comment:
      If you have to adjust your tuning, your capo tension is just too high and is also likely positioned wrong and/or doesn't match your fretboard radius.
      If you can bar a chord without tuning issues, a capo can do the same. It needs very little tension (if you can't adjust it, replace it with one that lets you).
      You need to match your fretboard radius (good capos come in all different radii and a pro player should have one that matches. If it doesn't match, the strings will receive unequal tension), use the bare minimum tension for your guitar (it's different on every guitar), and position it as directly over the fret as possible without it muting.
      Do this, and you will literally have to do nothing but put it on and remove it, without ever having to touch your tuners more than you would without a capo. Its functionally identical to barring with your finger. This has totally changed the game for so many of my clients. Blows their mind every time, so I want to pass the info on. 99% of people use capos wrong. And I love Sammy G, but his advice here just perpetuates the misunderstanding more.
