    We would all like to think that we would do differently, but in reality I think that we would all do the same thing. We fear the darkness rather than light a candle. Years ago, when I was in college, a group of us guys were walking across campus and noticed a woman standing up against a building facing it. My friend said wait and he ran over and talked to the woman and helper her on her way. She was blind and had lost her way. My friend was the only one of us who went to help. We all stood and watched. I have never forgotten the love and kindness he showed this total stranger.

    Laine Bradbury was also in the great ABC TV movie "Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring" w/ Sally Field.

    One of the most daring of all the Insights for the subject matter. Interesting choice for Britt Leach; he usually played bad guys in episodic TV.

      It was an unsettling episode on a number of different levels. The usually upbeat and likeable Arlene Golonka played an unusually mean-spirited role here. The tasteless comments about abortion remain a little disturbing almost 5 decades later. Arlene may have been a little perturbed herself; did you notice that she flubbed her lines at 21:22?

      Do you know where I can find more of these episodes?
      I like watching Britt Leach acting, and I would really like to watch all of them.
      I'm his housekeeper now, just found out he is an actor.

    Truly amazing that Insight covered this and was allowed to get away with it; I don't think they'd be allowed to air this today.

      Yes, syndicated shows by definition didn't have network censors! Some of the episodes are very daring.

    During the dialogue between Arlene and Lane, my eyes and ears, which have been conditioned for so many decades of "Mayberry" caused me to do a double take when I heard "Millie from the Bakery" say "torn condom"
    I even said "Huh?" out loud.

    The name Sara is no coincidence. Recall the story of Abraham and Sarah, who was thought barren but in her old age gave birth to what would grow to be the entire Jewish nation.

      I had never seen this particular episode as a kid. But I was frightened and disquieted by many of them back in the 70s. I think that was part of the point - to create imagery that really stayed with you, forcing you to really consider the issues. Strangely enough, I kept coming back for more!

    In Kiley's own way, he didn't realize that he was sent to try to keep Melanie from getting an abortion via the dolls. Melanie got very mad at him because he was trying to force a baby doll on her when she was feeling guilty about going to get the abortion, but he as God's messenger, so to speak, was a very rejected man in his life, and that rejection by Melanie destroyed his will to live. The way they threw the baby down the garbage shoot is symbolic of abortion, and Kiley's will to live was aborted too by her rejection.

      That's a great interpretation. I'm usually pretty adept at interpreting the symbolism in these episodes, but you made some points that I hadn't considered. This kind of exchange of ideas between fans is one of the things that I love about this site. Thanks for posting.

      And Kiley's fetal position in the cold womb of death. And no child anymore to pretend to be Superman or a cop. And no one to lessen the trash. Very resonant symbolism throughout. The writer was on a roll.

    Interesting episode of a well done series. Airdate was Aug. 29th, 1972 and Roe v. Wade passes Jan. 22nd, 1973. I like how they give kind of a progressive's perspective of religious topics. This was before the far right took over.

    • @jgunther3398
      @jgunther3398 Рік тому

      It's not a progressive's perspective. It was produced by the right, and the left would like to keep it from airing, both then and now. You're probably thinking of a caricature of the right promoted by the left.
