  • Hey Folks. Started the week off on a downer with a leaking rainwater tank & finished it off with a very decent pumpkin harvest. I see many pumpkin & prawn red curry soups in our future. 🍲🦐
    Hope you all had a great weekend & have a fantastic week folks.

      There's a few mobs offering end of financial year discounts at the moment Gayle. Thinking we might get 2 around the same size & set them up below the house towards the dams if we can work it into the budget. It will mean putting off the tractor for a bit longer though but such is.

    So sorry to see you with a burst tank, same thing happened to me on one of my 20,000l tanks and it's heartbreaking. Especially here in WA where it barely rains.
    Quick question that may have been answered in another video. Why are you doing a direct "aqueduct" style elevated connection from the roof to the tank? Why not bring it down, do a buried run to the tank then up and into the tank? World be way easier to maintain. Less chance of collapse too.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  3 місяці тому +1

      Hope you got some of the recent rain over there mate.
      That's how the old owners had it set up. We're not happy with it but it will do for now until we set up some new tanks in a different position closer to the house.
      The tanks are higher than the house so we would need to dig a rather deep trench + there are tree roots in the way. They told us on handover that the tree has already broken the line to the house twice while they had been here so that's another reason why we haven't considered it.
      Hope the system is doing well Sebastian & thanks for the support mate.

      As long as your gutters are higher than your tank inlet, you should be able to run your fill pipes underground. Far be it for me to tell an Australian how to collect rainwater, but as a Texan who uses rainwater as our only source for the last 20 years, I would also suggest 100 mm collection pipe as a minimum. Best of luck! I love your videos!

      I know it's a particularly bad mix in the marine usages. 👍 These only have to last until we get some tanks set up closer to the house. The "aqueduct" will come down after that & the parts re purposed into something else most likely.

    Sorry to hear about the tank. That is not only colstly to replace but also to fill. But gives the need to redo some stuff. You have a fer ponds is there any way the water from that can be filtered and put jn the tank as a topup option in case of no rain ?

      The smaller 5000L tanks have a line running to them from the dams down the front, we just need a pump to fill them. 👍 That water could also be filtered if we had the right set up. There is also a bore/well on the property but we need to get a pump & also the water tested as the old owners never set it up properly.

    I also grow pumpkins. I'm curious if you had advice on the ideal watering interval for them? Thanks. PS; Pumpkin french fries are great. Also for spoiled pumpkins you can cut them open and cut off the bad parts and then feed the good parts to the chickens; its suppose to also help them get rid of parasites also.

      Hey Noah. When we grow them in beds it's generally wicking beds so they have access to all the water they want. For conventional soil growing I used to water ours every afternoon in summer as the house we were living in at the time had sandy soil & didn't hold moisture too well.
      These ones have only had rain as their water source so far.

    Know that frustration of water loss.
    My first crack at rain collection was a 900-gallon system of 16 55-gallon barrels. My first winter, one of the cross-over lines ruptured. I hadn't put shutoff valves between each tank. Sooo... roughly 300 gallons leaked out and started to freeze in my backyard.
    All this took place at night and 20 degrees f.

    In the states we have what we call Squash Bugs. They look like Lady Bugs, but are generally larger, and orange instead of red. They eat leaves on squash plants leaving a sort of wispy lace behind from leaving some of the thicker parts I suppose. They lay eggs in bunches of about ten on the underside the leaves that are red. If you don't catch them the grubs will go to town on the leaves. The colors I describe may be slightly different as I have trouble with red and green, not to mention regional variation.

    I thought you would throw the seed from the best pumpkin?

    • @Berkeloid0
      @Berkeloid0 3 місяці тому +2

      All the fruit on a given plant come from the same genes, so it doesn't matter the quality of the individual pieces of fruit (assuming decent pollination) as both the good and bad fruit share the same genes. The *next* generation that grows from the seeds will vary based on how the seeds were pollinated, but you don't know if they are any good until you've grown the plant and seen what kind of fruit it produces. So it's fine to plant seeds from fruit that isn't great, as long as that same plant also produced a lot of good fruit too. But if the plant produced mostly undesirable fruit, it's better to just get rid of the whole plant and forget any seeds it produced (from good or bad fruit) as you don't want those detrimental genes passed along.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  3 місяці тому +1
