I grew up playing what you call Traditional Scoring Extended (winning by 100 points). Games could last hours or even days, and why not? The feature you don’t mention is that the person starting each round gets 3 attempts at the open 20, the 3rd of which remains on the board unless it is sunk. That’s 60 points if you make all 3. It might sound goofy, but it is your best hope of deciding the game today. I know from an informal survey that this system is common in my crokinole community. So, yes, the game is over at 100-0. Just as likely, if you’re playing your dad, whose brain is foggy from the chemo, it’s over when you can no longer remember whose turn it is to start or what the hell the score is.
I haven’t heard of that rule before, interesting! I used to play traditional scoring when I was younger, so that’s a cool variation to hear about, the 3 20 start.
Thanks for the info. We really like this channel all except for the extremely annoying sound going on in the background. It’s a blessing to receive the info & it’s a blessing when it’s over.
I have a wax/powder question. I've been using the yellow dust/powder/wax on my board. I think it's the same as the Capo yellow powder, which is some sort of ground corn husk or corn starch. The powder is great for speed and consistency, but it does scratch up the discs and the gutter (I know it's the gutter and it doesn't matter much but it certainly changes the look of my board). Is there any producer that actually sells a wax (probably carnuba) based dust/powder for boards? Any recommendations?
couple thoughts, the biggest challenge with this comes from people being too aggressive when rubbing their disc in the gutter. Some folks its like they think they are trying to sand the gutter down. to remember that it is just a very light dusting of the disc will help. the other thought is that when I went to Budapest and played they used a potatoe starch for wax. I find it a bit messy and it behaves a bit differently than capo but it does work and is super gentle.
New to the game and had one question about the 'race to an odd # of points' as a means to avoid ties when using NCA tournament scoring in an informal setting. Wouldn't ties still be possible if both players had achieved the same score (say 4-4 in a race to 5 points) and then tie in the next round? Or maybe I am misinterpreting the rules?
Hey Steve, You are 100% correct. A tie is still very possible. To be honest, I don't know why we race to an odd number. I also don't know why folks say "you have to win by 2" as if it is possible to win by only one point. LOL.
@@TraceyBoards Thanks! What my son and I have been doing since we took delivery of our brand new Tracey Tournament board (absolutely fantastic quality by the way!) is simply awarding one point to the winner of each round and playing to a set score (typically 5 points) rather than playing a set number of rounds. This way a player can’t ‘coast’ to a victory by being awarded points for a tie but rather has to actually win the round to advance. The added benefit is that it has resulted in a few dramatic come from behind victories ( where regrettably I came out on the losing end). Love this game and the new board! Believe it or not I’ve had it set up on my kitchen table for the past three days (taking advantage of being a bachelor at home for a few days while my wife is away).
What if say player 1 has 3 discs in the 10 pt ring and player 2 has 2 discs in the 15 pt ring.. what is the scoring for that round? I hear only one player scores per round.. so I’m stumped.
If I am reading this correctly, each player has 30 points on the board and there are no 20s that have been scored. This would mean that the 2 players or teams are tied. In traditional scoring like a race to 100points no points would be added to either player or team score. If this is NCA tournament scoring than each player would be awarded 1 point for a tied round. Which scoring system do you like the most?
I really don’t like the scoring to 100. It seems that it is a pain to keep track of. I much prefer the tournament scoring. However, we usually use the tournament scoring in a race to 9 points. We’ll play multiple times this way.
How do you keep score?

This is a good basic review of the scoring rules/process. BTW - nice cutout black sign, good addition. Love the videos, keep up the good work.
Thanks for the feedback. We love that sign. Had it custom made by our friend who has a shop in the same building as ours. XM Custom Design.
Thanks 😃 can't wait to get a board and have my first game
Saving up my money to buy my first board and it's gonna be one of yours. Not buying a cheap one. I'm sold on this game.
Love to hear it!

3 games to 5 and the point differential team point. Just waiting on you to come on down and kick off the fall league, there Bud.
oh man, would absolutely love to do that. is there a date set?
Why are counted all the 20's in the score of a NCA Players Championship?

race to 9 is a fantastic way to play
Our scoring method is the one where Dad wins...😋 (though I must admit, my daughter in law is getting deadly with her open twenties)
that is my FAVORITE scoring method :-)
You can use 1, 2, 3, and 4 points works just fine. Why give out so many unnecessary points?
A whole video filmed with no bloopers eh? People are going to start thinking you're a professional or something.
Hey Chris, stay tuned for our rebuttal to that comment LOL
