The way Barnabas stands holding the door looking intently at Maggie saying "May I?...." he is so dangerously sensual..

Then after shaking Sam Evan hand Barney takes a hard swallow -- whew! BUT Barney has these very guarded expressions which are obviously based on his fears but JF adds his own anxiety either about his lines or the teleprompter or both that adds another level that always worked great for Barnabas at the expense of JF

I would think that people would put 12 & 12 together. & figure "Something" out. Esp. Evans...having dealt with Laura...However Barnie probably knows that Evans is a good "Drinking" buddy......

I think its cute how Barnie uses the pretense of a commission to gain access to Maggie. I also think its interesting that he showed up at Maggie's door soon after she arrived home and insisted in his sexy Vampy way to come in. He always wants Maggie to stay for the sittings and constantly comments on how attractive Maggie is. In the Previous episode you could tell he was scheming on how to rid of Joe HAskell. It seems Barnie has a jealous streak. Joe won't know what hit him. "Hurricane Barnie"

He's just pining for Josette and so that is all he can think about.

It would explain why he almost pursues Vicki in the beginning, but then play for Maggie but in later episodes he gets Vicki anyway?? is that how it went down. I thought Vickie was stuck on 1797.!?

Helene Papageorge He likes Victoria when he meets her as she appreciates his interest in the past, but it's Maggie who looks like Josette, and Josette is the one he loves. After Maggie rejects him again and again and she escapes he turns his attentions to Vicki, who he sees as more pliable and is fascinated by Josette, but Julia stops him fanging her and they are at loggerheads over it. Vicki then is propelled back to 1795-6 and when she returns he fangs her and compels her to elope with him but Jeff Clark is standing in the road, so she crashes the car. Then they are in hospital and he finds Dr Lang has cured him. After that he falls in love with Vicki for herself, but she loves Jeff and he is sad but helps her and Jeff.

that's interesting, I didn't know how that ends for Barnabas. I suppose that was where JF was going to leave the show so he could return to the theater and resume his life. He was quoted in more than one place where he was supposed to leave and start his own company--which he did do eventually. But not before Dan Curtis begged JF to stay on and JF agreed but only if he could create another character with [probably] more input with the script-- and that was Bramwell Collins, the son of Barnabas and Angelique. The arc of Bramwell and his relationship to the rest of the Collins HH is that of estranged, according to his co-stars, JF felt there should have been more romance for Bramwell. I sometimes wondered if there was anything between JF and LP for a period of time. Its more likely there could've just been really good acting chemistry between them but sometimes you wonder if there was something else. LP said in an interview when she auditioned for Angelique, JF admitted he hoped she would be chosen, But LP dismissed it as he probably said that to many women who auditioned for the role of Angelique. But she gives a really goof=d interview. One convention the last for JF, LP admitted that Grayson Hall did not want her as Angelique as Hall [married to the DS writer Sam Hall] wanted someone else for the role. JF's response to that was telling. He might have been responsible for keeping LP on DS but probably wanted to forget that episode in their lives. The interviews given by a few DS co-actors, following the passing of JF in 2012/3 are very interesting. DS was really a gateway for long-term theater actors to learn how to do commercial work. But even more so were their remembrences working with JF whom as young actors all felt indebted to him for helping and probably coaching them as he was a trained Shakespearean actor and also a Theater Director.

Another thought and I'll let this go before Sam Evans enters the scene, the exchange between Maggie and Barnabas there is a growing sexual tension/attachment between them that Barnabas established when he allowed Maggie to re-open the coffeeshop for him. THe conversation encouraged her to re-heat his coffee to make him stay longer. Then he left his cane to get her up there. He constantly needs to get Maggie alone but needs Dad's permission, so offer a commission and flatter the hellout of him --"I'm fortunate to find such a talented man in such a small town".

I think he really wanted a portrait. He doesn't know what he looks like. Having a portrait done is his only way of finding out whether he is unchanged or not! That the artist happens to be Maggie's father is just a huge bonus^^

I grew up on the Marilyn Ross books, seeing Barnabas as a hero. It's so painful watching him behaving like a bastard. :(

If you stop the action at 10:27 Barney has this look of anxiety and utter fear as if he were "caught in the act" and Maggie's expression is like "Daddy where have you been?? How come you weren't home to protect me??"

"His Eyes seem to penetrate" well Vicky sure picked up on Barnie's ability to hypnotize his ladies. If you watch JF as Barnie from episode 211/2 to now, Barnie does this full eye contact hypnotic thing BUT nothing like Bela Lugosi.Lugosi does it in ahypercampy way whereas JF is much more subtle. Like a guy with an obsession problem. Though JF likens Barnie to an alcoholic because of his BC "secret life". The eye-contact is rather intriguing but he also leaves his women feeling extraordinarily vulnerable and guys like Willie Loomis are terrified by him because its so confrontational and intmidating at once in such a passive aggressive way that its not only disturbing its also terrifying. JF always played both poles of a character even on all of his theater works, especially as a Shakespearean actor. Critics had raved about JF's performance when he pulled this off as "King Richard" so JF knew it would work for Barnie. Except that he added some other characteristics to Barnabas that he didn't do for King Richard. On UA-cam, JF opens up about the origins of Barnabas Collins and how he developed and interpreted him. In a magazine interview he also tells of his collaborations with the writers. I suppose he might have been the only actor in the cast with so much creative license in this way. In fact there are 2 interviews that JF gave that were really interesting in the early 1980's & you can find them here. Please watch them. On one of the Interviews they have 2 of his performance excerpts from his one man show. I wish I could have seen him live in the theater. It must have been quite an experience to listen and watch him on stage. You kind of get a sense of how dynamic a stage actor he was from his roles as Barnabas and then again as Bramwell Collins.

Vicki and Maggie both can sense his powers already, but as yet don't understand what that means.

THere is something else I never noticed until recently. THere are some shots where the painting of Barnabas is a passive character in scenes. I just realized that this is why Barnabas might know some intimate details of the family and thier struggles with Burke Devlin and Jason McGuire that Willy Loomis could not have revealed to Barnabas. Willy doesn't know the secret that Jason and Elizabeth share except Barnabas. Not even Roger or Carolyn know. THen in one episode Elizabeth reveals all to them. I don't recall if Barnabas is there. Perhaps not, but no matter he already knew eavesdropping via his portrait while asleep in the coffin, he heard all.
Its also how he knew who Jason McGuire & Willy Loomis were and what motivated Jason back to Collinwood

Lugosi and JF are the only actors I know who could pull off the "otherwordly hypnotic look" somewhat convincingly. However, Lugosi is about as enticing and sensual as a root canal procedure, whereas the screen starts smoking whenever JF is on it. I just can't take anyone else seriously in a vampire role^^

It's funny, but I always remembered Barnabas as a heroic figure when I was a kid watching this. But he really is evil here, and that dissapoints me so much.

    • @mabel8179
      @mabel8179 8 років тому +3

He appears to be evil yes, but he isn't deep down. After being chained up alone, lonely, tormented by his memories of those traumatic experiences of 1795 and thirsty and heartbroken he's a lost and damaged soul. When you see 1795 you'll see why he is the way he is in 1967.You are right that he is heroic, but that comes later.

Gringo Glad that does for you Gringo. I watched from the very first episode and when it came to seeing Barnabas for the first season ( 1967) I didn't know myself all his back history and didn't have a great opinion of him then until I saw how he changes. People had told me that he did and became a selfless heroic person but I couldn't imagine it then! I'm on my third watching of the whole series ( except for leaving out the Maggie kidnapping episodes and 1795). Where are you up to?

But his eyes have great power- he hypnotises someone through them as we saw in the previous episode. He uses his eyes just before a fanging.
