So, I have watched approximately 374,588 videos on how to process, combine channels, etc. This :30minute video was the BEST tutorial on all of youtube. You sir, are a saint for doing this. And to think its 5 1/2 years old ! This should be the first hit on any search for Astro Imaging or Astro Photography processing. I have never seen a SINGLE other person explain the scoring system on registered frames, and how to use a reference frame to stack against.

I have been using a DSLR for five years. I just invested in an ASI178MM camera with filter wheel and four filters; Red, Green, Blue, and Lum. I like to think I am not stupid, though my wife might disagree, but I am retired from Steward Observatory Mirror Lab where I was the Supervisor of the Polishing Lab, so I can't be THAT stupid. I have a whole new rig that consists of a CGX mount, an Orion EON 130mm ED scope, a 60mm guide scope with an ASI120MM guide camera. I know how to shoot my data, but needed to know what to do with it. I have watched literally hours of tutorials before I got to this one. In each of those tutorials the presenter always managed to get off on a tangent, and/or raced their mouse around the screen so you didn't know if they were actually doing something or not. I simply needed a "work flow". I didn't need to know why, and I didn't need to hear about one time when things didn't work; I just needed the "work flow". This tutorial did exactly what I needed, and frankly what just about anyone needs. While at Steward I wrote the mil-spec format procedure for fabricating an 8.4 meter mirror. It was over two hundred pages detailing each step in the process and it was designed for a technically competent but totally ignorant individual to perform each step without individual training. This tutorial accomplished this function beautifully. From one Tech Writer to another, WELL DONE!!!!

Hands down the best UA-cam tutorial on astrophotography ever. This really cleared up many of the things I knew about but just didn't know how to successfully merge into one good looking endresult. Thanks a lot for finally letting me "see the light" :-P

After struggling on the internet to find good instructions to combine RGB and LRGB together. I found this video to be quite detailed and give proper instructions on how to do it. This is a very good video. Please keep up the good work and post more astrophotography videos. Thanks.

This was the only tutorial about LRGB channel combination that was useful to me!! i feel ready to jump up from DSLR to Monochrome ccd!
+andres noriega m unless you have a highly modified DSLR, it doesn't d you good to shoot monohrome LRGB. DSLRs have the color filters built into the sensor as a bayer array. :)
This is SUPERB! The best tutorial for LRGB that I've seen. Now to have a go!
I almost had to chuckle at myself, thinking that moving from a OSC camera to a monochrome camera would be a piece of cake. I've been a photographer most of my life and used PS for at least since version 3. This video walkthrough got me back on safe ground, and gave me the knowledge and reassurances to process my first imaging session with my new gear to an excellent result. Thank you!
Likewise...life was so much easier with the DSLR. Really hit a wall with the asi1600mm...had to re-learn a lot from camera settings to calibration frames . This video was a HUGE help!!

Just blows me away that this sort of image comes from a 1.5MP camera, I come from the conventional photography world where basically more MP is better (up to a point) but Astro cameras work on a completely different set of principles; cooling, pixel size and sensitivity far more important.
This really helped with a few key concepts of combining the LRGB images. Thanks for posting

This was a successful night because I learned a few new points that will no doubt improve what I'm doing in DSS. However, I'm not yet doing LRGB images, but I plan on going that after I resolve tracking and guiding issues I'm having with my telescope mount. Until then I'll watch the video to get a better understanding of the process in general through some repitition. thanks for the new tips!

Excellent video on how to use monochrome pictures to create lrgb. By far the most understandable video on how to do it from raw pictures right through to the finished product. Will be using this as my Goto bible. Cheers.

First, than you very much for the excellent video. I'm moving form DSLR to LRGB etc and found the video invaluable.
Now for the stupid question: OK you go through all the stuff, as in the video, and you're left with the various adjusted layers for LUM and RGB - what then i.e. how do you bring the RGB anbd LUM together? I'm presuming by flattening the Layers, if not then how?
Hi thx for the tutorial but what about flats? would you just add all flats from the beginning then check uncheck along with darks?

A really good instructive video, however how do you align the Red Green and Blue images before they are added separately to each channel? My RGB images are not quite aligned.
Pay close attention in the staking phase. The reference frame is what aligns the image channels to one another.
Thanks for the video! So you pick one reference frame for all stacks, regardless wether it's red green or blue? can you also do that with narrowband?
Hey David. Thanks for this awesome video. Been working on a photo myself. I found, however, that my colour channels don't quite align. Looks like there was some drift between the images. So when each stack is made from each colour set, the final LRGB frames don't quite work. Any idea how to correct that without manually rotating/sliding each of the frames so they line up?

When you stack each LRGB in DSS, do you set a new reference fram fore each one?
Use the same reference frame for every color, that way they all line up perfectly at the end.
shouldn't there be a set of dark frames for each L R G and B instead of the same dark frames for all of them??
No, the dark / bias frames are subtracting signal generated by the CCD. Changing the filters has no effect on this unless temperature changes or exposure changes. You shoot dark and bias with the CCD covered. Avoid it all by dithering ;)
I have a problem. Deep sky stacker isn't accepting my dark files. It is stacking only my light frames.What can i do??
Try the new version of DSS, I had a similar problem of it crashing when RAW light files were loaded.
I can't get Photoshop (CS5) to open the 32bit tif files from DSS. I had to save the images as 16bit. Apart from that thank you for a great tutorial.
Just discovered it will open 32 bit rational but not 32 bit int.
When I run deep space noise reduction the action runs be through a bunch of options during the process watching you use if you just cliked if and if went. Any ideas why that happens?
If you buy the actions, you can see each step individually.
@@rankinstudio I did buy it. I guess if you open the folder in the actions list it asks you every action the combined one is performing. If you just click on the folder it just runs the action. Thanks for great tutorial!! I reference it often when processing my photos.
This is good to know info but for a newbie to LGRB processing it was way too fast. I would suggest doing maybe 3 videos...basic processing for newbies, moderate processing and advanced processing. The basic one would obviously be shorter. Another thing to consider is what version of PS a person has. For example, this one is CS6, I have CS5. Above all please slow down particularly for basic. Thanks for your time in doing this.

You're not thick. Ctrl A to select all, Ctrl C to copy, Ctrl V to paste. :)
What can i do, if my LRGB pictures dont fit exatly each other? i have a offset so it doesnt really work.
+Cover1987 Do you mean they are at different scales? If it just drifted, using the reference frame like I showed in the video fixes that for you :)

when I change my Lum layer to luminosity it stays mono, not sure what I did wrong
You have to create a new RGB document, ctrl N. Then paste the RGB files into the RBG channels. Then paste the lum as a new layer and set it to luminance blend mode
