I am such a huge admirer of all four persons on this stage. I have seen Rufus, my hero a few times now - but I am off to see Loudon (twice) next month with Lucy as support and I just can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sadly I'll never see the late great Kate now - but I hope to one day see Martha x x Love to all the McGarrigle-Wainwright-Roche kith and kin
In my head there's another Wainwright who Loudon disowned because they are middle-management in a corporate company with health insurance & a mortgage, who is teetotal & listens exclusively to sports radio.
I adore the way Rufus made this song HIS OWN, and reinterpreted as a gay man....it takes on a virtuous tone, as opposed to daddy's selfish faux artistry
HA! OK, it becomes an entirely different song when Rufus sings it solo; then, it takes on a beauty about standards and almost a renunciation, and is much more a song about yearning than a declaration of independence from a family left behind...
It's a CONDENSER mic. They pick up a wide area, and, if you get too close, they can really BOOM. He's standing nearest so it picks up the guitar. If he sang straight into it, he'd drown them out. THAT's why he's turned sideways. If he turned the other way, all the amateur psychoanalysts here would be saying he's rejecting Rufus for being gay. Kate, and Rufus, Martha and Loudon worked their way through the problems a long time ago, and a lot of apologising, criticism and bridge-building was done privately and through song. Loudon's been well laid-into and he's taken his lumps as justified. It's none of our business bringing up a past they've already dealt with and obviously come to some consensus over. They're onstage together for goodness sake (and it's not a one-off - they've done it quite a few times)! The war is over. They don't need you to fight wars on their account for which they've already signed the peace treaties . Get your own life (and look up the meaning of forgiveness - although that's really none of your business either). I await the hate mail. Some folks just love living by proxy.
How much talent can one family have lol. Great song, they are brilliant melodists.
So rare to see the whole family, any family, perform together!
