    Board games and their history are super fascinating. Irving Finkel’s work on the Royal Game of Ur comes to mind, great stuff.

    I do like that the luck vs skill argument was still happening back then.

    Lols, i am sure the bishop of florence would be happy to know that a major opening, Ruy Lopez, is named after a Spanish priest.

    Really enjoyed this one. I prefer Go, but learning about the history of anything that stretches throughout a significant part of human history is always interesting.

    kind of funny that the debate over games has never really ended, and lootboxes have brought us back to talking about harmful randomness/purjury and fraud. great video!

      truly a huge issue, especially when targeted towards kids. I doubt i would agree with an early christian ethicist on much, but the guy who said dice games are immoral might have been on to something

    It’s interesting, to become good at chess requires one to study its history and evolution via openings and middle / endgame theory. Every decent chess player is 1/3 historian by default 😊

    I'm liking your history channel, learning a lot of new things so far. Seeing your background on Mafalda made me wonder about women who broke with the patriachal norms of medieval society. I hope to see more of these women mentioned in your videos.

    I had read that check came from Persians calling "shah" when the opponent's king was in danger, which is what they called the king, and checkmate comes from shahmat, which means "the king is frozen."

    • @NizzahonHistory

      That is pretty much true.

    • @matteopriotto5131

      Doesn't shahmat mean "the king is dead"? It doesn't make that much of a difference practically speaking but it has a quite different feel imo

    Beth Harmon plays the Sicilian Defense, which is probably a reference to Bobby Fischer, as she is kind of a female version of him, although the fact that the Sicilian might reference Macalda is a pretty nice coincidence

    Hi Jacob, thanks for this video. Can you share your source(s) that identify Sicily and Iberia as the places where chess "crossed over into European society"? I tend to agree with you, but since sources are so limited (especially pre-1000 CE) its hard to pinpoint, though I'm trying.

    Mentioning Beibars - you should make a video about the use of ancient propaganda. Like how Beibars used his victory over a minor mongol force in Ein Jalud to enhance his image to the point of being viewed as a miracle general.

    • @NizzahonHistory
      @NizzahonHistory  3 роки тому

      I'd be interesting in learning what source you're referring to where you heard he defeated only a "minor Mongol force." It is definitely true he propagandized his victory, and blew it out of proportion -- and that the Mongol force was not quite as imposing as many of them were, but I think his victory at the battle WAS a good example of his tactical mind. Maybe he wasn't a miracle general, but he was a pretty darn good one.
      Basically I guess my objection here is calling it a "minor Mongol force," I guess a "weaker than normal Mongol force" is a lot of words, but "minor Mongol force" makes it sound like he was only facing off against a few hundred Mongols. Not 10,000+.

    • @jeanbarque9918
      @jeanbarque9918 3 роки тому

      I like both and am sure that you can't compare them, what are your arguments ? The only chance part in chess is having white or black first game.. I think you dont play chess or not enough or You arent good enough to say this.. about pure skill chess is far superior.. and for many other things also like the fact that both have exactly the same pieces, no chance 100% skills.. I am seriously interrogative and curious about why mtg is in your opinion "far superior".. or even just superior.. two very different games and for someone like me that hate chance in games your statement shocks me..
