Discovered this gentleman way back in 74, when DEAD SKUNK was on the radio. Did not know for a long time how good, how excellent of a songwriter and singer Loudon was and is. So glad that he is still with us, still writing beautiful and powerful new songs, and WOW! his voice is still strong at 77!
I saw him in 1969 when I was 19, at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Champaign, IL. He was one of my huge crushes. I still love him and love his whole family - Rufus is phenomenal. Such a talented family!
Been a fan since he played in a noisy lunch room at my community college in 1971 wherein almost no one was listening. Have seen him live many times in New York City and Long Island. Got to chat and take pix together a number of times.
Loudon Wainwright came and played in Belfast, N. Ireland in the 70's, when practically no musicians would do so. Saw him at Queen's University there. Thank you, sir!
I just watched the whole episode, one clip at a time....... I'm crying now...😢😢😢 From making me laugh 🤣🤣 with the Chris Farley bit....to how that song relates to my mom and i fighting bitterly right now... Thanx.....i needed that today ❤❤❤ 🌟🩷💜💙🌟
Two nights, you've got Bikini Kill and Loudon Wainright. A legendary punk outfit and an extraordinary singer-songwriter; poles apart from one another, but each among the best of their genre.
Recently went to an entertaining show by daughter Martha, peppered with references to Loudon. Given this performance, the family must have a story worth the listen.
Oooooh yes. The way the family drama plays out across the songs of Loudon, Martha, and Rufus is fascinating. How many daughters have been inspired by their fathers to write a song titled "Bloody Motherfucking Asshole"? Also check out Rufus's "Dinner at Eight."
@@yohei72 I grew up in Quebéc, very near to where Kate McGarrigle lived. The McGarrigle Sisters always put on a great show, unique and authentic. I never heard Martha perform until a few weeks ago on Prince Edward Island. It too was special. Her cover of Tom Wait’s I’ll Take it With Me is mesmerizing.
Thanks for the perfect Matt Foley! (I read that you & Chris Farley started at 2nd City... ON THE SAME DAY! That must have been a memorable day.) When you're in Milwaukee... did you know that the Marquette U. library owns Tolkien's faircopy hand-written manuscript of the LOTR? I would love to see a video of your reaction to being in the presence of that!
seek therapy. Sorry I love Loudon.. at Royce Hall at UCLA 12 years ago .. the whole nights theme was his dad issues. Great one about his father's coat. I have worn out my dad's leather bomber style jacket recently. I am doing better at getting over it.
Younger folk probably got to discover him through Judd Apatow - the dad on "Undeclared", OB/GYN in "Knocked Up", the priest in "40 Year Old Virgin", etc... Oh, and of course through his family as well.
There is no beat to this song, at all. Try to follow it. 4/4? 3/4? He's just strumming along, singing. Sorry, but I don't dig it. The lyrics are nice, though.
What a songwriter. What a performer. Always raw, always moving - thank you, Loudon.

Yes I remember that song as well great memory’s that particular song was a hit down here in Australia as well 🇦🇺🦘🐨
The M*A*S*H theme, Suicide Is Painless, was my first introduction to LWIII when he sang it in the original movie in 1970.
@@karenwhite4461 And when Ken Prymus sang it during Painless' "funeral", it made me cry.
Dead Skunk is one of my first memories of songs off the radio...
@@WRSomsky Wish they would play it now!
A whole lot of truth in this song. The details vary, the dynamic is universal.
Opened for him twice on Australian folk stages--he was kind and supportive.
Gratitude for the amazing talent of that entire family. 💜🙏 Love this song.

Thank You for this Song ! How True , during the 60s , well ‘ I was Wrong and He was Right ‘ Miss Him !!! 🇺🇸
How have I teared up 3 separate times watching Colbert tonight?🖖🏻❤️
It’s a natural thing. He stinks like an onion
Love this man so much. One of the best storytellers ever.

Just wonderful 😊.
Thanks so very much Mr.Wainwright 🩷. And thanks to Stephen as well! VOTE BLUE 💙
Love Loudon. I’ve seen him perform a half dozen times, every one memorable.
Loudon Wainwright came and played in Belfast, N. Ireland in the 70's, when practically no musicians would do so. Saw him at Queen's University there. Thank you, sir!
He is so very talented!!
Magical songwriter.
The incomparable LWIII, oh how I LOVE thee!

I've loved this guy since I heard That's My Daughter in the Water.
A perfect remedy for sad days.
Thanks Stephen. A timely guest.
He was the folk singer on MASH. He played Captain Spalding...
3 episodes in Season 3
Remember That ! ☮️🇺🇸
Have had the pleasure to see him live 3 times. Always pleases.
Bravo sir. 👏
His ad was in the paper. He looked so unbelievably pretentious and with the pose he was in I had to see who he was here. Lol
@davec.3129 So you judge people from their appearance in a single photo?
Says a lot more about you than them.
There once was a new Englander who loved his wife and family so much that he almost told them
It's been way too long since I've seen or heard anything from Loudon Wainwright. Thank you!!!
All the talk show hosts should unite and make a song like this
4! YES!

Bikini Kill too young to be legendary.
One of my all time favorite songs
He's still kicking it 💯
My man, Loud.

That was great!
Few can do what he does.
Great!

❤❤❤
Wow. Melodic, harmonic, and on key? Is this still allowed?
Oh Corona
We had clean sheets
Didn't he write "my parents should shoulder the blame for calling their kid such a strange name"? 😅
But is the Dead Skunk still laying in the middle of the road?
Lost nothing in 50 years. First saw him in M*A*S*H

If you listened just the audio, you'd thing you were in Woodstock.
Nobody mentioning this is a song to Rufus?
ya i thought so.
