The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Holy Smokes...WOW. 3 sax solos, 1 mute trumpet, 2 'bone solos, Woody, BASS, and the drum fill...The bass player is absolutely killing it at this pace...just an incredible performance by the entire orchestra...It's a hair raising, wild, tight, insane arrangement, HARD swinging rendition of a classic.
And it was all on free every Sunday night, Today we got Prancing with the D-listers and other reality shows.😢
And a lead vocal from Woody!!
Chuck Andrus on bass. You can hear one of the guys yelling “Charlie the Arm” during his solo, his nickname.
Early 1960's? Woody was simply incredible, and he really got talent and turned them loose. Fastest, hottest and wildest version of Caldonia I've ever heard. The excellence is really hard to comprehend.
Woody... Jake Hanna & Co... true GREATNESS on that stage!!!
The trombone player with the glasses was my cousin, Bob Rudolph!
Woody Herman rocks the house!!!
Bill Chase on lead trumpet!
Billy Hunt on the muted solo here
Yes. Other trumpets are Paul Fontaine, David Gale, Chase, Jerry Lamy. Billy was a HOOT. Crazy Oklahoma guy. And Lamy sounded just like Chase on split lead.
That's sensational, look at those crazy cat's go!!!
Caught this last night on Sullivan and had to come look it up to watch it again. Amazing!
I love watching these great performances on the Sullivan show! It’s on every night at 6:00 pm in our area.
@@michellebowers8652 Same! I was just a bit too young to catch them when they first aired. Very glad to see them now. Especially the musical acts!
Wow... Those guys a cook'n! Such talent. WOW
This was probably the greatest of Woody's later bands.I got to hear them a couple of times. Phil Wilson has the trombone solo. Bill Chase (big guy in the center of the section) is playing lead trumpet, was a very special guy. Split to lead his own very exciting small band called "Chase," heard them on Rush Street. He died in a small plane crash not long after. This was from the '60s, maybe '64-'65.
cool ty
Jake Hanna!
Rhythm are Nat Pierce on piano, Chuck Andrus on bass, Jake Hanna on drums.
that is a goddamn running bass
a full on sprint if you will
🔥🔥🔥
Holy shit.....I need my inhaler!!
Hadn't seen this one before. Looks like the '63 Herd. Bobby Jones is the first tenor solo. Don't recognize the other two. I guess Sal Nistico had the night off. Phil Wilson and Henry Southall, trombones. Billy Hunt is the trumpet solo. At the Metropole, bands played in a straight line.
Metropole did not have a lot of room...Saw Gene Krupa with a 5 pc band, and THEY were cramped in....Everybody but the drummer stood in a line.
Bien
🍐☁️☮️💜
A friend of mine's father was Mike Hansen, who played with Herman Woody back then. Trying to figure out which one he is.
Holy shit
Holy crap, no sheet music!
every ''herd' has played thie piece a thousand times.......don't need any music.
You didn't mention what year this was.
24 March 1963.
The Ed Sullivan Show, March 24, 1963.
Bebop!
Dick Kniss on bass?
Wow. I am into jazz, but how come I have not come across this cat?
you apparently don't get around much with big bands.
April 30th, 1950
Incorrect. READ
I think Bill Chase got into the herd in 63.
Man if you don't get this crap out of here this version is trash can't hit the notes so they sped it up and it lost all the flavor lol and this was actually on tv???
That base player sucks
So does your spelling stupid 👏
The bass player on the other hand….
