  • Mora is a classic manufacturer of bushcraft or outdoors tools. Here's a tongue in cheek psuedo review of one of their best in classic livery.

when i worked with property management as a teen in sweden, we each were given a fresh Morakniv and were told that if we were to break the knife within a week they'd double our pay.
When i did what we call "lumpen" ( millitary service ) we were given the classic 2, im pretty at some point i loved that knife more than my family.

There are many knives more expensive than a Mora knife. I respect someone who collects beautiful knives. But if I need a knife that is practical, tough, and reliable, I would choose a Mora knife.
In my opinion, when used during military service, camping, or working at a power plant, I prefer materials that can be repaired with a leather belt or a stone. (420HC ~ 440C, 1095)

I love my Mora for the same reason I love my Smith & Wesson M&P Flipper Pocket knife. Super cheap, heavy duty beater knives that are up to any job, easy to sharpen, and I can give them away, throw them away, lose them, break them and I've got 3 more of each back home to replace them.

The sheath is absolutely perfect for swedish winters , drainhole ,no leather that can mold if you have trouble drying it if you are out longer than a few hours and your staying place can not be heated. All a question of what is needed.

@@survivalinstruct0r not quite correct, if you are making the annual reindeer migration in the winter that can take up to a month and going trough rivers you have enough trouble that a leather sheath can be a pain.
Older ones had selfmade metal sheaths with drain holes .
Leather is nice and good looking but also a pain if it gets drenched in such conditions.
Its not an afterthought but a solution to a real life situation.
When you finish the day and go to sleep besides the animals ( no house or hotel) and have a sheath thats easy to dry and wiping of and oiling makes more sense than a leather one that takes hours to dry in a warm environment , that you dont have at that time.

Found an ancient Mora in my grandpas belonings after he sadly passed at 96. I picked it up and remembered when I was a toddler we were driving down a country dirt road at winter, and he suddenly stopped. He had seen the perfect small christmas tree. Got out and said a few bad words as he did not find the handaxe in the trunk. But with the Mora and a pipe, he cut it down, and the tree was given as a present to my parents. Glad to have it with me in my car now, 45 ys later.

For better retention in the sheath first find th point at which the bulge of the handle meets the sheath. Now. With about a one eighth inch drill bit drill through the outer face of the sheath. Next cuta very narrow wedge from the hole to the top. This mod intruduces a bit more springiness to the sheath and somewhat improves retention. This is obviously a permanent alteration so consider carefully before proceeding.

Mora knives are not so common in Russia, but I took the MORAKNIV Classic No 3. I can’t say that this is the best knife I have seen, but it is definitely worth attention for a hunter. For my needs, I use the FOX knife.(НОЖ ЛИСА) I haven't come across a better one yet.

... it's my best cutting knife... but not the best for battoning!
It is very light, not tiring on the hand; the hand becames too slippery for my taste if wet, greasy or blooded, I opted do to little dots in it with a pyro engraver with a fine point... it improved the grip and looks nice. The sheath is ambidextrous and of good leather, but it must have been treated with some kind of repelent as, despite my greasing, it does not darks!
The price was about 4 or 5 times of the regular Mora (about 80 $ in my country a few years ago) And it is a small model... 4 inch blade... yours seems bigger but it might be the optics effect on the camera.

I like the mora classic. Its good simple knife but be carefull there are extremely sharp. If you slip a finger on it even slightly by mistake it will cut deep. Anyways its a perfect knife for fine finess tasks like slicing bark off arrow shafts or bow staves. Its cheap too. And its tough enough for camping tasks even battoning thin sticks Yeah sheaths not great but the bush black sheath is absolutely horrible.

@@survivalinstruct0r Thanks for the great review. Life-long mora user here. As much as I love the classic mora, there are good reasons not to put too much trust in the original plastic sheath. Doesn’t take a lot of jostling around to knock the blade loose, and then it’ll just slip or you may cut yourself reaching for it because the metal part of the handle ends up balancing on the plastic rim. Worst part is if that happens because you were sliding, slipping, jumping or taking a fall. I’ve lost a fair amount of moras in my time to those sheaths - so I began making my own a long time ago. Sometimes I’ll remove the belt attachment bit and use the closed tube as an insert in a leather sheath, with a proper flap or strap to lock it on place. That way I get the benefit of a sheath that I can trust and I get to still keep the blade dry and protected in rainy or wet conditions so it doesnt rust. Not too keen on stainless … :)

This made me look into steel and I discovered the god of modern metallurgy Robert Forester Mushet. Very sad story, he perfected the first process of mass producing steel, vastly improved railways and created tool steel/high speed steel along with other things (he knew that he'd make himself and his "partner" Bessemer rich) but his dream wasn't fulfilled and others made a fortune on his inventions.

The key Mora issue is this: SS or CS?
My advice: CS. Both will create sparks, so that is not an issue. SS will certainly stay shiny, longer whereas, no matter how well you treat it CS, will acquire a patina.
However, my knives are for use not appearance.
My advice, as said, go CS. The reason is that despite all your good intentions the time will come, in the wild, when you have to use your knife as a pry bar. At worst CS will bend, whereas SS will snap. Moreover the more 'supersteel' it is, the greater the chances of it snapping. A snapped knife in the wilderness is about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.
