Great video Sage. I really like tips 3 and 4 for ultras. I don't even start my watch (sometimes don't even wear one) or use GPS ever for runs. I just run for an hour or so each weekday and anywhere from 3 hours (base run) to 7 hours depending on what event I'm preparing for on Sunday. That has worked very well since I started ultras in 2013. Many may not understand or agree with not tracking running stats, but I used a GPS watch 10 years ago for about 3 months and found it was the most mentally destructive thing I've ever worn for running, so I find running by feel and the less I know and are distracted by data that I find irrelevant, the better.
Ashley if it’s not on strava it didn’t happen! 😀😀. I wear my watch all the time, even when not training, but when running trails I don’t pay attention to it much. Like you said, just a distraction. Too many variables; hills, forest distorts connection,... I learned to just go by a feel as well and it works great. People tend to be to dependent on gadgets these days.
@@obiwanschinobi Ah the old strava defence 😂. That would mean that in 27 years of athletics, I've never run a single day and I'm cool with that. I totally agree that people are too dependent on tech these days and react to the watch over the body or brain. I'm not against people using gps watches at all as everyone is different and gets something out of it in their own way, but I refuse to wear a GPS or smart watch. Sure there are some good features that would be helpful, but I can't justify the cost of one to look at them maybe twice a year.
@@evlsv620 I really like to use my watch to backtrack my route later on at home, see where i went and automatically log it. Also to have a rough estimate with time/ditance to know when i have to turn back home and how long it will approx take me depending on the route i chose at that moment
Love the video. Been really in joying the videos. Been getting into running this year and my goal is a Marathon. Today I ran a 10k in 49 minutes, best time yet. Your videos have help me lots thanks.
Recently finished my 2nd 50k (Duncan Ridge Trail/GA). This one had 10k of elevation, so it was much tougher than my first one. I applied everything I’ve learned from your videos (as well as Cindy’s 💪🏽), and I did very well throughout the entire race. Canaberey energy packs every 30 minutes also helped get me to the end without bunking🤙🏽. I continue to work on all the pieces of advice y’all give.. from nutrition to proper running form...it has made all the difference! Thanks for all the vids. Y’all ROCK🤩!!
Took up running one month after I did a 10k trail run which I joined just for fun. Two months later, I did a 50k ultra (trail event). Finished 20 minutes before the cutoff time. That was two years ago. Now I enter about 3 ultras a year just to challenge myself. Unfortunately I still finish around the final hour before cutoff.
The Conflict I guess my fitness comes from 11 years of mountain biking before I took up running. But even that, my joints, ligaments, and the skin of my soles were not ready for such a jolt (pun intended). That’s why I had a swollen right knee after my first session of “training”, and also I lost 6 toenails in the next 2 months. And my soles had blisters like never before. But still, 4 weeks later, I finished my first 50k but at near the last place. 😄
great stuff... hesitating between a 65km pr same 53km as last year. Love ultra... feels like an event that worth it more than other sonce you spend the whole day there ;)
Just a wild guess...but that brew also has some dunkability//On my way to inspect Waterfalls and maybe increase my base w hills n thrills along w some cowbell/tunes....MUT is a fun word.
Like sage said would spending more time on feet make you a better run I've started a new job recently that requires quite a bit walking and I've noticed my running has improved
Any Running tips on running j. hot humidity weather?.I had a awful Marine Corps Marathon this year, the weather was brutal. We were literally running throw rivers flowing down the streets I. Some spots. Started getting leg cramps by mile 13 and by mile 17 it was over, legs would not let me run and more. I finished, but I’m not sure what went wrong. I was taking base salts and drinking water/Gatorade. it’s was suggested to me that I could have actually overloaded on the salts.
being that Im now 69 years old Im thinking of trying a 50k....my first. Im now back into power hiking/running...but my problem will be staying ahead of the Broom Wagon (sweeper/ cut off times). Im doing about 3 to 3.25 miles an hour ( hilly trail miles )...but most Ultras you need to average at least 3.5 MPH....Im short! Ive started to do a track work out just to get my legs use to moving faster...but I think my age is saying....no way Jose. As I lose more weight Im hoping it will come together....
As you loose weight, and keep on training, times will come. Just keep on trying! And enroll in races! If you get caught by the wagon make it a point to do better next year
Avery Brewing Co #Ad runs for the first 30 seconds. Then the Training Talk Starts!
Nothing better than a cup coffee and watching Sages training talk in the morning :) cheers Sage
I do the same thing 😊

You're a great beer commercial!!!
I want a beer now. Thanks Sage.

Follow tip #1.
How on earth did you get from 10K to 50K in two months?!

Training for my first ultra in 2020 - 60km. Thanks for the tips, really useful. Currently using Spring energy as well
I have the Arizona Rock n Roll marathon the same day you run the Houston marathon
"hmm ... Beer!" :))

Thanks! I will complete my first ultra (I hope) this Saturday. THEN, and ONLY then will I drink your beer! :)
I think one more tip would be to work at marathon distance (or below) for at minimum 2-3 full years of consistent 5/6 day a week before moving up.
What made you want to be a runner? I've always wanted to be one myself. Any advice on getting started?
“Mmmmm beer” most humans

I'm sure the ex alcoholics that used running to escape the trap of alcohol abuse will love this advert
I tried to transition from running 1 mile to 2 miles but after getting to 2 miles I decided to stick with 1 mile. It's half as miserable.
Did you actually mean kcal? 200,000 calories an hour?
You crack me up guy
Feeling really thirsty now.
